After putting just 1000 round of Hornady 168 gr A-Max Match, the flash suppressor came loose and the retaining pin of the forward assist sheared in three pieces resulting in the forward assist falling out of the gun.

I called the S&W technical support, and was told that I could change the pin and not void the warranty; The warranty would still be good, even if I failed to remove the pin and still had to send it in.

I asked about how the warranty applies if I installed a Geissele trigger and was told it would completely void the warranty on the entire gun, including parts not associated with the trigger, such as the barrel, BCG, etc.

I had no problem getting my Colt AR fixed and even left the Geissele in it with no complaints from Colt.

One other option would be to reinstall the original trigger assembly and hope that S&W does not discover the deception.

Anyway, I just want you to give you guys a heads up if you decide to mess with the internals of the gun. The trigger isn’t bad, but I have the same Geissele trigger on all my guns, and was planning on installing one on my M&P 10 for consistency.

For $1200 this is a really accurate AR-10. I’m not an expert shooter, but I can consistently get ¾ inch MOA out of this gun. I'm using a 2.5 x 10 Nightforce NXS scope on a Bobro Precision mount.

And this is news? This has been Smith & Wesson's policy from the get-go. If you, a gunsmith or anybody else modifies the gun, it voids the warranty. If you think about it, the age of product liability we currently live in mandates this policy. As for Colt, I would think twice about holding them up as the pinnacle of business acumen and prompt customer service. They have been bankrupt or nearly so more times in relatively recent history than you can shake a stick at and there's a reason for it.

I would also like to point out that the bolt assist assembly was dragging against the BCG even though it wasn't depressed which resulted in the bolt assist retaining ping eventually shearing resulting in the bolt assist assembly hitting me in the face when the BCG ejected the round. Luckily I was wearing eye protection. I'm a left handed shooter BTW.

I understand the issue that a custom part could damage other connecting parts and void the warranty, but I was surprised that unrelated parts such as the barrel would not be covered.

In dealing with Ruger, Springfield, and Colt, I never had an issue with modding their products and still having warranty work done as long as the issue wasn't related to the mods that I installed.

I though I just pass this information on for whose who are planning on modding their rifle.

It's good to get the reminder from time to time. Yes, you change anything on the rifle, the warranty is void.

Anything? like adjustable gas block?
Buffer? Magul furniture? Flash suppressor?

Any aftermarket parts that damage the firearm or cause a malfunction to occur may void your warranty.

They changed their position then. Good to hear!
