Default M&P 10 Realtree Camo

Just picked up one of these with a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 for $900. Feel like I got a good deal. Previous owner says it only has 20 rnds down the pipe. That looks to be true, gun looks new inside and out. It is the 18" barrel without flash hider, just straight barrel.

I already have an Armalite AR-10 A2 that I have had for about 19 years. I was pleasantly surprised how much lighter and more compact this M&P is over the Armalite. Although, I would have prefered a slightly longer barrel to get more velocity.

What should I expect from this gun with accuracy? I noticed it has a 1:10 twist and most of the reviews I have seen tested a lot of 150 grain ammo. I would think the 1:10 would work better with 168 or 175 grain. What is you guys experience with bullet weight?

I have a M&P15 sport that pleasantly surprised me with it's accuracy, in the 1/2 to 3/4 MOA with my hand loads consistently. I hope the 15 didn't set my bar to high...

I have seen some post discussing "short stroking" and feeding issues. Is that a common problem, or just a handful of folks with issues? Maybe they were using light ammo?

Thanks,

Rosewood

I'm still experimenting with mine when I have time. So far, mine likes Remington 168 grain Gold Medal Match best. It didn't shoot Federal 168 grain Sierra Match King as well even though it is the same bullet.

As far as what it can do, I've seen videos where people have shot the rifle out to about 800 yards and hit the target. Stock out of the box with just a scope mounted to it. I suppose one could get out to 1,000 yards with the rifle but that would be the extreme limit for the round and it still be effective. People in the military have gotten out that far with that round for a long time.

Shoot it as is for a bit and see what it does with different loads. May have to do nothing with it. You got a very good price with the scope also.
Let us know.
I also have a straight barrel with no flash suppressor. I wish it was threaded, but that can be done.

It shot less than stellar with my handloads that shoot well in my Armalite AR-10. It shot factory federal GMM best and whatever Federal rounds that was in the mag that came with it. The GMM doesn't shoot that well in my Encore .308 or my Savage 10 with heavy barrel. I may have to try out that Remington load. I was dissappointed to start with, but after seeing what it did with the GMM, I am optimistic that I can make it do better with some load tweeking.

Thanks,

Rosewood

.
Have you chronographed those loads? What speed are they running between the Remington and Federal?
I am figuring matching the velocity will get the best accuracy.

I have not. I don't have a chrono.

I see you are running into the same thing I've seen between my MVP Patrol and my M&P10. They don't like the same things. So, I have to figure out what each likes individually. Maybe I'll find a find a "happy" middle ground for general shooting but finding a precision shooting match between the two is not going to happen.

You're going to LOVE your 18" slick barrel, its beyond handy while getting about 97.2% velocity out of most anything you will stuff in it...

the 1 in 10 twist is perfect for .30 Cal, my 06 loves every thing from 110 grain varmint loads to 180 grain "show stoppers"..

I'd love a test drive with your rifle, it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for...

I do like stainless barrels on AR style rifles, my Rock River has a Wilson Combat 1 in 8 twist, I had to wrangle an 18 barreled upper from a very slik chick at one of Central Obamastan's Finest Rock River dealers! the 16" was way to short, the 20" way to long, and like Goldilocks the 18" was "just right"!
