Default M&P 10 Optics and Bipod recomendations

New M&P 10 Sport owner and I'm excited about putting this firearm into service. I bought this for home defense (distances greater than shotgun range to short-medium rifle range) and I am interested in suggestions for optics and a bipod.

Optics - My eyes aren't what thy used to be and, unless its VERY short range, open sights are not an option. I have been considering scopes but most seem to be well in excess of what I need magnification wise. I'm not going to be using this as a sniper rifle and cant think of a scenario where long distance shots would be necessary. Online suggestions seem to be to look at a 1x4 or 1x6 type scope for the distances I'm needing to cover. I'm wondering if this is a task that might be suitable for the .308 model Tritium ACOG unit? I've never used one but the reviews seem to all be positive about it's durability and capabilities.

Bipod - Is there any unit that will work with the standard handguards? I would prefer to not have to modify the firearm any more than necessary and the current handguards are comfortable for me. Not surer what bipod options are without adding picatinny-rail style handguards.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions anyone might have. I'm still reading threads here on the forum so I'm sorry if any of this has already been answered.

On optics, you might want to take a look at Primary Arms. Many of their scopes are made in the same factory as Vortex scopes. Many of their scopes are offered in 1-6X and 1-8X in both first and second focal plane, depending on what your budget is. From memory, they run anywhere from about $280 - $1,300. I think entry into the FFP field is at about $350.

I can't remember the details for a bipod but it is possible to modify some stock hand guards to mount a bipod. You might want to look through the M&P15 section. More than one person has done it.

Palmetto State Armory has a sale going on, the Vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 scope, along with a Vortex offset mount. 30mm scope body, illuminated BDC reticle, fully multi coated lenses, lifetime warranty. $269.00 with free shipping. I have one, and it is a heck of a deal on a heck of a scope. The 1x8 version of the same scope and mount is $339.99 w/ free shipping.

I have a Viper as well, and the Strike Eagle is just about as nice at a real nice price. By the way, the Strike Eagle is a second focal plane scope (which is really what you want for your use), and has very clear optics, and accurate adjustment repeatability. I like mine, and highly recommend it, especially at the price it is on sale for. Link attached below.

R/E the bipod. There are a number of companies that offer short sections of picatinny rail that can be attached to the vent holes on the bottom of your handguard - the perfect way to attach a bipod, and a better choice than models that attach / clamp to the barrel, as they can adversely affect accuracy. Pictured is one I use on one of my AR's, to mount a flashlight, though a bipod would work just as well.

Larry, That sounds like exactly what I’m looking for. Can you provide a link to what you have or something similar? I’m not sure of the item name I should search for.
