Just bought an M&P15
Hey guys, just signed up. Grabbed an M&P15 at a gunshow Saturday. Don't have any 5.56 on-hand, so shooting will be in the future. No range report, sorry.
Anything I need to know that wasn't in the owners manual? This is my first rifle, only owned a handgun until I saw this.
Thanks! I plan on spending a pretty decent amount of time on these forums, always looking to learn.

Wow, that's a great looking AR! Did it come new with all of the Magpul MOE furniture, rear sight, and magazine? That's a slick setup.
I just recently bought a M&P15T and added a few goodies ( see this thread). The Magpul CTR stock was a must-have, more comfortable than the standard M4 collapsible stock.
Congratulations and enjoy your new carbine! If your experience is anything like mine has been you'll love shooting the M&P15.

Yep, I haven't purchased anything but the rifle yet, it all came with it. With the price it was AND the CTR stock, there was no way I could pass it up.
That's a beautiful rifle, glad you're enjoying it!

Great selection! I have owned my M&P15 VTAC for 2 months now and love it...most enjoyable firearm out of the 9 I own.
I've been using Hornady & Federal 223's with zero problems.

Just give it a good cleaning includeing bore and chamber before fireing it. I think you are gonna like it. Mine ran great right out of the box, all I put on it was an Eotech sight and a light.

Thanks! I'm waiting on optics, I want to be as proficient with the BUIS as possible before I jump into high-price/value optics.
Would I be okay to use the Hoppes 9 I use in my handgun? Everybody seems to use CLP or whatever on their ARs/AKs, but I don't know the different between them and Hoppes.

Okay, thanks. Right now the only range I can go to is an indoor range, so I have to use soft-tip rounds. I grabbed 200 .223 soft points to use until I join one of the local clubs with an outdoor range.

Congrats on the rifle.
Thats a very cool setup! Just clean it, and lube it really good (I switched from CLP and now use Slip 2000 EWL it made a big difference).
I used Remington and PMC brass ammo for the first 300 rounds and have been using the "new" Wolf .223 and have had no issues with around 1200 rounds of the Wolf.
Have fun.

Hey, Burnsy87, the difference between Hoppe's number nine and CLP is that the Hoppes is a bore solvent/cleaner and the CLP is primarily a lubricant. You can use the Hoppes to clean the chamber and bore of your rifle and use the CLP ( I like CLP!) to lubricate the rifle. At your range or club find someone who is up on the AR to give you the lowdown on maintenance or use the tried and true, owners manual instructions on cleaning. Have fun!

Negative.
I completely forgot I signed up for a shooting competition with my Beretta PX4 and I've had to buy a ton of ammo to practice and I need to by a holster and mag pouches ASAP. Also, the range that doesn't require membership is indoors, and finding soft-tip rounds is hard. I need to join one of the two gun clubs in the region to be able to shoot at targets more than 25 yards away.
I'm disappointed I haven't been able to, but by the end of October my entire focus will be on the M&P.

Took it out today, just getting home.
Without zeroing, shooting at an indoor range at a target ~50 feet away, I was nailing the center. I was with 5 other people with about 6 guns available for us to shoot, and everybody had the same results as me with my rifle. Nobody had any rounds off to the side, just up and down the center. Beautiful rifle, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.
