Default MP15 won't feed rounds -- UPDATE 6/17/2010

Earlier this year I bought 3 new M&P15 rifles. They are all CT compliant and have consecutive serial numbers. Yesterday I took them to the range for the first time. I tried all varieties of ammo, both .223 and 5.56. , and Federal XM193, WWB, PMC Bronze, Wolf, etc. Also used lots of different mags - USGI Vietnam era, PMAG, C Products, Colt.

Two of the rifles ate everything up with out a hitch. I was really impressed. However, the third rifle will not feed a round. It seems that the nose of the bullet gets hung up on the teeth near the feed ramp. Here are a couple pics:

If I pull back on the bolt, sometimes the round will drop out and sometimes I have to free it by hand.

I will probably bring it back to Smith for them to evaluate, but any idea on whats going on here??

I posted this over on the AR-15 Troubleshooting forum and got some good feedback. I am bringing my rifles up to S&W next week and will report back.

Lightbulb M&P that wont feed...

I am a great believer in taking advantage of warrantys. All of you do the right thing and send the damn things back to Smith to handle . Its your good money that you spent on an expensive rifle so get some satisfaction and have them (Smith and Wesson) repair it. Sometimes gun enthusiasts just think they can fix everything. If you return it to them you might be surprised there are recalls or improvements that have been made. The only thing I will offer is this: Use factory ammo and make sure you have good magazines. Use the mags from the working rifles. You could have a bad mag or your reloads (if you using reloads ) that may not be up to snuff. Send it back or take it to a Smith authorized warranty station. One that repairs them. Gander mountain may be able to help you. Mine near my house in Twinsburg Ohio has a real great trained gunsmith with additional training as an armorer in the Marine Corp. Hes excellent. Get it warrantied and in the meantime go shoot the other rifles.

Zero problems with my 2009 M&P15 "VTAC" version with 2,000 rounds.

I only use the "S&W brand" mags...butt ugly & expensive however they work great.

"Smith and Wesson brand" mags are PMAGs nowadays....least, that's what I got with my 15T purchased recently (May). Excellent magazines.

This doesn't sound like mag issue, however, especially as the poster has two out the three rifles working flawlessly. I agree with the others, send it back and let S&W take care of it.

Default UPDATE:

UPDATE: On June 11 I drove this rifle up to Smith & Wesson in Springfield, MA and left it for their techncians to look at. YESTERDAY, June 16, I received the rifle shipped back to me FIXED! That's 6 days! If that is not good service, I don't know what it.

By the way, the solution was a simple polishing of the feed ramp. Today I took the gun to the range to verify the fix. Worked just fine! It took all types of ammo and several different types of mags, just like my other two M&P15s.

My hat is off to S&W personnel. Everything was handled just right. Thanks.

Pete
