I love shooting the 15-22 and my only complaint is the trigger. Have JP yellow springs installed and the pull weight is perfect, but was still quite a bit of creep. Didn't want to spend $150-250 for a drop-in trigger so I've been searching for a cheaper solution. On some of the AR forums there are discussions about using a set screw to reduce trigger travel. Was a bit nervous but went ahead and tried the mod and am very pleased with the results.
I removed the fire control group and grip, then tapped out the existing grip screw hole with a 1/4 x 28 tap. The original socket head screw is 1'' long 1/4 x 28. I replaced this with a 1/4 '' long 1/4 x 28 set screw and a 3/4'' long 1/4 x 28 socket head screw. The 1/4 '' long set screw is run into the hole first until it protrudes about 2mm above the bottom of the lower. Reassemble the fire control group and adjust the set screw until the trigger travel was exactly what I wanted. Made sure that safety still functioned properly. Put the grip back on with the new 3/4'' long socket head screw.
I already had the tap so total I was out less than $2 for the 2 screws. The entire process took me about 15 minutes start to finish and the end result was at least a 50% reduction in trigger creep.
I know some will be concerned about the possibility of accidental discharge, but did not find any evidence of this occuring on the AR forums and fired 200 rounds with no problems yesterday. Maybe someone with more technical experience (like BeltFed) can chime in, but I think this mod accomplishes the same thing as some of the more expensive drop-in triggers. I've included a pic of the set screws in case my rambling has confused anyone.
