I need an M&P 15, I need an M&P 15, tell me why I need one !!!
Well I have the itch to buy my first AR-style rifle. I have a Ruger Mini-14 but feel the need to get more tactical. I find myself suddenly drooling over the S&W M&P 15. A friend has one (I have to own a NY compliant model by the way) with about 100 rounds through it, minty condition, and he has had a nice scope and front handle that opens into a bipod put on it. Says he paid over $1000 for it and then added about $500 in accessories, and he has about 200 rounds of .223 ammo he'll throw in too. My buy it now price would be $1200. Sound like a deal to you guys ? I'll have to sell some guns to buy it, gotta make sure I have to have it............. HELP !!! Shoo

Sounds like a lot of money Shoo. I think I would look around. $700 or $800 seems more like a good price. Don

Depends on which model it is. Even base models used to be a grand new, but are cheaper than that now. Ammo is getting down to about 33 cents a round. You can have pre 94 ban rifles right? For that much, you can get an old Colt.

OK, I'll tell you why you need one. They're easy to shoot with half a trigger finger! The Devil made me say that, I swear!
By the way, he doesn't sound like all that good a friend to me; not at $1200 anyway.

Of course you need one!
My M&P15 OR.....Troy rail, Emod stock, Bill Springfield trigger, ACOG 3.5x (primary), Burris RDS (secondary), GripPod, etc. And the best part is that next week I'll be using it in a 4 day carbine course.

no...
I think the dark side is calling, time to clamp hands over ears, close eyes, and run about in circles, singing 'na, na, na, na....'
says he who just acquired a Tikka T3 Lite in .223 on outrageously sheer impulse....
at our age(s), who needs/can use 'tactical'?

Ohhhh yeaaaaahhhhhhh.....here comes some more!
My M&P15 in an earlier stage of development. Looks OK but I wasn't happy with the Magpul hand guard. It moved around a bit (which the Troy rail does not do). I had a Millet DMS-1 mounted on it which for the money wasn't too bad. Without a doubt, I prefer the current configuration (from my previous post).

Yeah . . . ALL S&W fans need one . . . and there's no stoopid lock on the side of it to make the gun ugly or unsafe when you need it!
Your friend probably bought his about the time I did . . . after the last presidential election when AR15s were scarce and very expensive. (I paid over $1,000 for my OR model (without sights) and have added a Holosight I had around PLUS bought a set of M&P 15 BUIS sights for it (plus different grips, different forearm piece, special magazines, slings, etc.). Thus, I've got some money in mine one too!
I've seen my model selling new lately for about $850, so if your friend got his when the prices were outrageous, he probably doesn't know the prices have fallen as they have.
WARNING . . . these things are addictive . . . and like Harleys, no two are alike. Personalizing them is a lot of fun . . . and shooting them is fun too!
TAKE THE PLUNGE!
Tom

Here is a good read if you haven't seen it before. The link to the spreadsheet which describes the various components and how they are rated, etc. is helpful, in my opinion. It is pretty good for quality vs. price, IMHO.

Depending on which state you live in prices on guns vary. I live in the crazy state of California, Southern California to be exact and gun prices here are much higher than most other states. Since you being from New York and all I would say the M&P 15 rifles are going to be a bit higher than what other guys have paid on this forum.
That model rifle your buddy wants to sell you goes for $900 here in California when its on sale. I don't think he is trying to rip you off since he did add some goodies to it already.
I purchased the M&P 15 PSX for $1,200.00 (that's if or when I get my rebate) and with tax and DROS fees I paid $1,340.00
I think you are getting a good deal.
Here is a photo of my modest rifle. Only going to add an eotech to it.
BTW why does your buddy want to sell his rifle already? Maybe a dumb question since I was about ready to sell mine to put towards a Springfield SOCOM II

My M&P15 MOE:
As shown: Magpul CTR stock, CAA UPG16 pistol grip, sYankee-Hill gas block/flip-up front sight, Troy folding rear sight, Vortex G6-A2 flash hider.
Not shown: Primary Arms MicroDot red dot sight, and the MagPul B.A.D. lever I've recently added to it. I just ordered the KNS anti-rotation pins (Gen 2 Mod 2). I eventually want to float the handguard and add a full-auto BCG.

Your friend must be a very smart person.....that is what mine was before it got a few add-ons.
On a more serious note, I have no desire to use iron sights, carry handles, etc. As such, getting an M&P without those items on it, ready for the optic of my choice, was what worked for me. I got mine this past March at the local Cabela's.....$901 out the door, tax, title, and license. Of course, I haven't left it alone and have added a few things (sometime twice) before I got it the way I wanted it. Some would say I should have built it from parts and then I only would have bought some of those parts once.....but.....since I didn't exactly know what I wanted the first time around, I don't think it would have made much of a difference. The next one may be a scratch build....time will tell.

If it's a MP15OR and your buddy paid $1000.00, he either bought it during the high prices after the election, or the dealer put it to him. In either case - you shouldn't have to pay for him being silly.
Here is a compliant MP15-OR for $824 new.
Smith & Wesson 10 + 1 223 Rem. Optic Ready Compliant w/16" B $824.00 SHIPS FREE
A local dealer will charge something to book it in/out to you (around here it's $25.00)
So the gun should cost you about $850.00.
Can you tell us what he added for $500.00?
Still, I don't think it's a deal.
Take care,
Bob S.
p.s. Here is what my MP15-OR turned into...
Sights down...
Sights up...
Magpul MOE hand guard
Magpul ACS Stock
ERGO grip
Midwest Industries Sights
EOTECH 512
Vickers sling
BCM Gunfighter charging handle
Spikes Tactical ST-T2 heavy buffer
(added since picture - Magpul BAD lever)

Thanks for all the input and info guys. Guess my friend bought it at Gander Mountain and then had them add the $350 scope (not sure what scope) and the front handguard grip with extending bipod. He's got about 200 rounds of ammo too. I think after what you guys say that I'm gonna pass on this unless I can get it for less. It will all depend on what kind of cash I can put together. The NY compliant AR that Bud's sells for $660 is lookoing better all the time..... Shoo

Well, I cheaped out and bought the Delton instead of the S&W. Total shipped price is $639. Hope I made the right choice......that's the problem with filet mignon taste and a ground beef budget ~! Shoo

Well I couldn't afford the S&W at this time, so it's a Delton for me for now. I've got $738 total in the rifle and Barska Sniper Scope. Should do the job for my first AR. Here's a couple of pix, thanks, Shoo

I can't really tell you that you shouldn't buy an M&P15, because I just bought an OR yesterday. Actually my wife bought it for me for Christmas. I didn't need it, but I liked it and wanted it. Got it from Sportsman's Warehouse. Retail is $1069. They had a "Normal" sale for $949. But then they had a christmas sale for another two hundred off, bringing it to $749. On top of that, S&W has their military appreciation rebate still until the end of the month, so I'm getting another $100 rebate. So that makes the total price down to $649. Couldn't really pass it up. Not for a quality S&W.

Well, considering there's a big button on the link you provided that said "Please call or email for purchasing information"; that maybe you can send them an email or call them tomorrow.
But to answer your question: If you look in their FAQ section, you can look at #2, and it asks:
Quote:
"2) Do you sell to civilians?
Yes, we do sell to civilians with restrictions. Civilians are welcome to come to either of our retail showrooms and shop, place orders over the phone, or place orders online through our secure website. If you request an item that labels you as a law enforcement officer or you are requesting certain weapons, knives, or ammunition a copy of your department identification will be required as some items are restricted to law enforcement only. "
|
So, there's your answer. Basically, you need to call them and ask about a "Specific" weapon. Then THEY will tell you if it's restricted to law enforcement only, or if they'll sell it to you.

You don't really need anything except air, food and water. This is America, the greatest country in the world. The M&P 15 is built here and you can legally purchase one. That's all the reason you need. God bless America! I'm buying one with my tax return. I just have to join a club that will allow me to use a M&P 15.

I paid $939 back in July of 2009. That was a deal then when prices were $1200. Prices go up and down. Just be glad you got one and ENJOY!! Don't look back...Be Happy!
