Default M&P 15 PSX accuracy

I just ordered a M&P 15 psx. People say that piston ARs are less accurate than DI ARs. Is this true in your guy's experience? If so is the difference very noticable? I was also wondering if the trigger is as bad as people make them out to be. Thanks in advance for your responses.

The issues associated with some piston systems are expansion from rapid fire heat causing binding and possible lack of accuracy from vibrations not present in DI systems.

Most of what I have seen shows little if any loss of accuracy between the two types at normal fire rates and less than very long distances for the avg. shooter. Weight is also minimal in comparison to some add on units that make the weapon seem "front heavy" for some.

Have used both. In my experience it makes no difference whatsoever regarding accuracy.

I have an M&P15PS and have been very happy with it. The accuaracy I find to be the same as my DI ARs so not to worry. The nice thing about S&W piston ARs are how they kept the weight down plus they are not front heavy like some other brands. You'll be very happy with your PSX.

I have a M&P15 Sport with a Vortex red or green dot and have been able to keep them in a 6" circle at 100 yards (using my loads). Have never shot any factory ammo through it so I can't speak to that. Overall I find the Sport does exactly what it should. Why the optics? My 78 year old eyes just aren't what they used to be. I'm sure a few of you understand that. I notice a lot of threads dealing with accuracy lately and when it comes to Smith & Wesson firearms, I feed the accuracy is built into the piece. Where the projectile hits the target is determined by the skill of the person behind the sights.

I have owned a M&P15 PS for over 5 years. It is my favorite rifle in the safe and has never had a failure since its first shot. It takes less than 30 minutes to clean, compared to much longer for my DI gun.

I chuckle when people say a piston gun is heavier, has more recoil, and is not as accurate as a DI gun. I weighed my piston components and found they weigh a mighty 6 ounces. Accuracy is as good or better than my DI gun.

You will probably get many comments on how a piston gun is a waste of money and you made a huge mistake in buying one. Given that more and more manufacturers are producing piston variants I think they will be around for a long time to come.

This target was shot at 100 yards with a 3x9 scope, using my reloads; 55 grain Hornady bullets pushed by 24 grains of AR Comp powder. I did install a Geissele trigger that greatly improved accuracy.

Enjoy your new gun!

Old post brought back to life.

I have a couple different brands of piston driven Modern Sporting Rifles in different calibers (5.56/223 & 308/762x51) and have had zero issues with any of them. ALL are great shooters. BCG runs cleaner because you're not dumping the gasses in the bolt to make it function like the DI models.

BIGGEST issue is, they (piston driven), are proprietary to their manufacture. None have interchangeable parts in the gas operation of the weapon and "can" be hard to come by, unlike the DI models.

Other issues. Some brands have been short lived. Thus, making parts even harder to come by if needed. Not much (if any) aftermarket parts to be had. For some reason, the manufactures are very reluctant to send out parts and want the weapon sent in for repairs.
