Default UTG Quad Rail w/ Free Float on M&P15OR?

Will a Leapers UTG#416 Model 4 Carbine Quad Rails with Free Float Extension (MNT-T416SE) fit a M&P15 OR? This gun has a short gas block picatiny rather than the traditional A2 type sight. This quad rail system would have to fit over and around the gas block picatinny rather than over an A2 type sight found on most model M&P15s. If it fits it looks like there would be a level picatinny plane with the receiver, quad rail, and gas block. Anyone know if this will work?

After looking at the UTG product at > http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.p...mno=MNT-T416SF, from the pics on the page it looks like it might do it if you use the model MNT-T416SE and that open space fits the OR gas block top, can't really tell from the pic's though but it looks pretty close. However, it was designed for the A2 type of sight it looks like, the width of the OR gas block is about, roughly, the width of the A2 sight base so it might work out.

In one of their pic's they show a folding front sight being used and it looks like its on a gas block, so maybe the thing will work. A good solid fit though?

Thanks, Foxtrot. You and I are thinking alike. Just hate to order something without being 100% sure to avoid return.

I am interested in doing this as well. Please post what you find out.

From the reading I have done, to post a free floating rail you have to replace the gas block that comes on the OR with a lower profile one.

However it appears there are good options for drop-in rails which require minimal installation and no changes to the gas block.

Default UTG Quad Rail w/ Free Float on M&P15OR? Answer

I heard back from a company rep at Leapers who makes the UTG #416 Model 4 Carbine Quad Rails with Free Float Extension (MNT-T416SE). The response was "Our MNT-T416SE will fit S&W M&P 15OR rifle very well based on our testing."

Based on this I am going to invest in one. Note that this model is not entirely free floating, only the short extension pat the cut out for the sight. They do make one that is entirely free floating, sorry I don't have the model #.

Maybe not the answer all of you are looking for but I own an M&P 15 ORC and just picked up the new Midwest Industries Gen 2 drop-in carbine length. The fit is very snug, no movement at all and it looks and feels very solid. I haven't been to the range with it on yet but here is a before and after (I also added Troy front and rear BUIS):

That looks good. I might have to look into that too.

Admittedly not an expert but it seems to me a "free floating" quad rail would be of more use on a longer barrelled rifle than a 16" Carbine. The main advantage IF I am thinking correctly would be accuracy at longer ranges more appropriate to a longer bbl., no? I can shoot very tight groups at 100 yds. ( for me anyway ) with non floating , simple magpul forend.

For those that wanted to know how my M&P15 OR with the MNT-T416SE (quad rail w/free float extension) worked out: The upper section of the new forearm fit nicely over the gas block, and the lower fit as well. The short 3rd piece on the underside rode over the gas block some, so it was not level. I used a drimmel tool and ground on the inside some to get it to fit. I'm happy with the outcome, but it certainly wasn't the cakewalk intallation that the Leaper's rep led me to believe. In the end, I basically have less than $900 tied up in my M&P15OR that has the look and quad rail functionality of a $1400 M&P15T. I notified Leapers to let them know not to be so optimistic in telling customers about a good fit of their MNT-T416SE without some easy gunsmithing needed. I'd order it again, just don't expext it to fit well right out of the box.

MPDC,
You're right about the advantage of a free float barrel on longer rifled guns. However, the Leapers UTG (MNT-T416SE) actually only has about the end 3 inches or so free floating. I installed one not for increased accuracy as much as inreasing add-on options with 4 additional picatinnys, a more robust forearm feel, and looks.

Thanks for updating us. I'm tempted to get one but I already bought a shorter one from Primary Arms. The fact that it takes some grinding makes the UTG less tempting.

I understand, it is certainly a viable option and glad you could make it work for you.

I bought the UTG free float for an AR I was trying to finish on the cheap. Every time I pick that rifle up I want to punch myself for buying that clunky chunky *** on the front half of it. It is junk that should be saved for airsoft toys. I can’t wait to replace it. Just and FYI.

Glad it sort of worked out for you. Maybe you should send them a bill for your time in having to make it fit properly? Or was that section, in its original intended design, not really supposed to fit over the gas block and you just made it so it would?

While they cost a small fortune, Daniel Defense Omega drop in free float is supposed to be the end all, according to Larry Vickers.
