If ALL OTHER GUNS were at normal retail price, then i would say yes. However; I picked up an M&P15-OR (Much better M&P15) on sale for $649. S&W are on sale a lot. You just need to look. So; at that price; I wouldn't get a sport when I can get an m&p15OR.

The Sport is a cheapened version. There are some lower quality issues. And if we were looking at the normal $300 difference in price; I'd say the SPORT should definitely be considered. But when the OR is available on sale for the same price, I wouldn't even consider a SPORT version. And don't let people tell you that the OR has no sights and you'll be paying a lot extra. You can get an equal quality set of sights, equal to the Sport, for about $50 for the pair. So the OR is still a better deal/price. If you want the sales, you have to be patient and do some research. If you can't be patient, then pay whatever you want and buy whatever you want.

We get our OR's for $425.00 on contract, and our personal OR's with discounts for $495.00, and no tax, so I can't personally speak to the retail others pay. Heck, I haven't paid actual retail for a weapon in so long I think i'd have a heart attack if I had to do so

However, I know people who have shopped around and gotten a much better deal on the OR model than what you have seen for the Sport model, and the OR is a much better model. It might be worth it for you if you went to the OR instead of the Sport model.

What's the difference between the M&P OR and Sport models?

You can swing by the S&W site and check out the specs of both models to see what the differences are. In doing so, you know you will get accurate info instead of 2nd hand.

Sport v. OR differences:

Barrel - OR has a 16" 1:9 twist, 6R rifling, chrome lined barrel and chamber. Sport has a 16" 1:8 twist, 5R rifling, melonite treated (surface hardened) barrel and chamber. Both use 4140 barrel steel.

Upper receiver - Both use 7075 T6 aluminum and have flat top with T marked rails. Sport upper receiver has no forward assist or dust cover. OR has both. Both have casing deflectors. Sport (and I assume the OR) have M4 feed ramps.

BCG - Both have chromed lined bolt carrier and gas key. I suspect that the BCG's in both are identical, based on my inspection of the BCG in my Sport.

Flashhiders - appear to be identical.

Sights - OR has none. Sport has an F marked front sight base with an A2 adjustable sight post and a detachable dual aperture rear sight.

Lower Receiver - Both are forged aluminum. The OR has the straight bottomed hinged trigger housing. The Sport has an integrated bottom trigger housing that is enlarged and curved.

Stock - Sport has a six position telescopic stock. OR has a six position CAR stock. They look identical, so I'm not sure what the difference is.

Hand guard - They appear to use the same hand guard, but the specifications don't state what type of hand guard either uses. They look the same in the pictures.

I think that covers all of the working parts. Not sure if there are any other differences.

Thanks Fabius! Does anyone have any personal experience with both (i.e. trigger time) that can offer a comparsion?
I would appreciate any insights.

I picked up a Sport last week for my nephew. Mounted an old EOTech on it and went out and sighted it in. Shot over 100 rds of asst 223 and 556 ammo with no problems at all. It seemed to be a bit more accurate than some of my other AR's, or I was just having a really good rifle day.

I'll give it to him this weekend for the urban rifle class I signed him up for.

No complaints at all.

Mike

That may have something to do with the 5R rifling Smith is using in the Sport barrel. That's the same rifling that the Army's M24 sniper rifle uses. Also, the melonite treatment of the barrel bore is not a lining, so it doesn't cause dimensional changes like chrome lining.

I suppose that you could say that the Sport barrel rifling is milspec - for a sniper rifle.

If they do, I hope that they make it retroactive. When I bought my first M&P pistol it came with three mags and a coupon for two free mags from S&W. The Sport comes with a 30 round PMag. Maybe they'll offer a couple of free PMags.

I had this weird, impulsive urge at the gun shop 2 weeks ago and since a buddy works there and gave me a better than average price, I bought a Sport. Last weekend I sighted it in with the factory iron sights and it shot just fine. Then I put on an EOTech and it still worked fine. It was working fine at the 300 round point too. In fact, it was a lot of fun. Worked just the same as any of my other rifles - seemed just as accurate if not more so than others.

Keep in mind that a 16" barreled, adjustable stock AR with an EOTech is not a target rifle. I think it would be just fine at what it was designed for. My EOTech has a 1MOA dot and a 56MOA circle. On a 100 yard target, the dot is still big enough to blot stuff out, so it is what it is. I would bet that if you put a nice scope on a Sport, it would be just as accurate as many "more expensive" rifles.

It might be my imagination, but it seemed like the bore cleaned up easier than my stainless barreled rifle. Or maybe that's because it was new; I don't know.

The action and trigger on the Sport are about like you would expect. The trigger pull is fairly long, but there's no nasty creep to it - it's pretty smooth. Like I said above, it's not a target rifle so I'll leave the trigger alone, more than likely. The action is fine - no hiccups, no problems. I was using Colt 20 round magazines and they worked a-okay in it also.

I'm just an average shooter. I've been doing it for decades and I haven't experienced a real need for a dust cover or a forward assist. I'm not crawling around in the dirt and mud, so the Sport works just fine for me. If I have to crawl around in the dirt and mud, I'll use a different rifle, or I'll just run away somewhere else.

If you're looking to get a nice, fun little rifle and only have that much money to spend, it works just fine.

Roger

Cool MP15 Sport

I had to pay $699, but since I am in CA and they are getting hard to get, I feel very, very lucky to have one. For this model, all I am going to do to it is add a Tapco recoil pad ( for the stock pull) and a sling. Anyway, I feel this is the greatest AR that has come out in a long time. Hoorah for Smith & Wesson. A brilliant move. John

Congrats on your purchase and I like you idea about adding a pad, the stock seems a little short.

I found a kitchen table FFL that'll do transfers for $35 (25 dros+ $10 transfer fee) so I want to take advantage of any of these online retailers prices When they & my bank accounts are back in stock haha

Tried checking out their site for that price and I didn't see anything. Plus for me, it has to be the model with the installed bullet-button.

Bought mine at Academy 2 weeks ago for $599, wish they gave credit for recent purchase. Still cheaper than Cabela's, seem like they told me they were either $649 or 699 if they could get them in. Academy had them sitting around.

I picked up one of the smith and wesson sports last week, took it to the range yesterday for first time, real impressed with the gun. i was shooing federal tactiacl 5.56 ammo and did not really try to sight in the iron sites, just got at 50 yards and aimed the best i could and was able to shoot a group about the size of my fist, just for the heck of it took a centerpoint 2-7 illuminated recticle that my son has on a sig 522, did not try to sight it in as well, just aimed for the same spot, shot a 30 round clip, and it shot great, when finished about a 1.5 inch group, just one big hole when done. looking now for a good way to mount a scope and be able to remove it and use iron sights if wanted, and see over the front fixed sight, my first ar rifle and dont see a need for forward assist. Any good ideas. Seems like a heck of a rifle, there where some other folks shooting and the smith actually shot better than a couple of the guys beside of us who where shooting custom made ar's and aimpoint sights, they where impressed, they both said they had been shooting for years and never had to use the forward asssit and dust cover was no big deal because it stayed in the gun case or safe when not shooting, so think i gonna keep it and work on some good sights without spending more than i did for the rifle, the one guy i was shooting beside of said that his rifle and scope was around 1800 dollars and my 585 dollar smith shot a tighter group.
thanks for any suggestions.

Larue tactical makes the best QR mounts and lots of very experienced shooters claim the scope can be romoved and replaced while holding zero before and after. Others make them too but the Larue is the benchmark.

Thanks, anyone have any suggestions on best way to mount a scope on the sport and be able to see over the front iron sight?
Also, any pictures on what kind of setup you may have with a smith with front sights in place and scopes would be great.

Some optics come with mounts specially designed for AR15's with front sight bases. I bought a Vortex Strikefire with the high mount for AR's.

For other optics you may need to buy a riser. The riser attaches to the top rail of the upper receiver and the optic can be mounted on top of the riser. You can get risers in different heights to provide an absolute co-witness or a lower 1/3 co-witness.

thanks, going to wait a few more weeks and work at getting good with the iron sights.
Also, anyone got any good ideas on how to mount a picatinny rail to the fore grip. A friend of mine is getting me a grip pod and trying out how to mount it without having to change out the front fore grip, just add a picatinny rail to the bottom.
