M&P 15 .223 Picatinny suggestions
 

Hi everybody, new guy here. I just put an M&P 15 in .223 on lay-a-way. It's the one with the flat top and gas block system. I'm looking to get into a 3 or 4 rail Picatinny forend that will fit it and would like to hear some suggestions. Are all forends interchangeable with this rifle or just certain ones? This is my first AR after getting out of a piece of junk KelTec. I don't know too much about AR's other than I have wanted a good rifle for a long time, so any advice would be good.

Just got a M&P15 piston gun w/pick rail system a couple of months ago, really throught I would like it, however it is very sharp, it came with rubber ladders to go on the rail to fill the gap and to sofin the feel if you use the rifle without gloves, IMO I think they were to large, S&W uses the Troy system with S&W logo on them.

What I did was removed the rail and installed the Magpul forearm, under $40 and very comfortable and has all the holes you want to hang anything under the sun on it. Very Reasonably priced and a great accessory.

Check them out I think you'll like it, and its also made rite here in the Good Ole U.S.A.

Although I have the MOE on my Carbine, I have also considered going for a quad rail on my 15OR.

My research leads me to believe that the Daniels Defense Omega, free float system makes the most sense for a simple instatllation of a high quality rail system. The surgery necessary to add anything but a simple drop in rail to the OR model with the same height gas block makes that the choice worth spending the bucks on for me. I see too many problems reported with the fit and solidity of the dropins in the lower price ranges.

Honestly, without intention of adding lots of "tacticool" **** to the forend, I may just stick with the Magpul which fits pretty well on my rifle. Just have to fight the "fever".:D

Daniel Defense, Larue, Troy, and Knights all make quality rails they are not cheap but they are the best. If you want a cheaper one the Magpul MOE that was already mentioned is light, cheap, and fuctional.

I went the MagPull handguard route and was very disappointed. It was a loose fit after I used it a while. So much for that one. Next.....let's spend a few more $$ and try a Troy.

This particular model from Troy was the 7" CAR/M4 Drop-In BattleRail. It is a quad rail mil-spec M1913 Picatinny rail. It also accommodates the push button quick disconnect swivel. It is a two piece handguard that installs in the normal fashion. It does have 4 screws to ensure the upper and lower halves are securely mated. It is not a free float handguard. I picked up a set of MagPul polymer ladders which fit the rails very nicely and made for a comfortable grip. I left a portion of the bottom rail exposed for attachment of the Grip-Pod when needed.
