Default picatinny rail on smith and wesson mp15 sport

have a friend who is going to give me a grip pod and wondering what would be the best way to possibly mount a picatinny rail on the bottom of the stock forehand without having to completely replace it.

thanks a lot , just what i was looking for, i actually went to a couple of gun shops and they all told me i have to buy new hand guards, that they did not think i could just do what i wanted, and of course they had new hand guards, anywhere from 80-200 dollars. Just like buying bullets, its best to shop around.

i also have a sig 522 standard and was wondering if this would work on it as well. I searched the sig sight and they show hand guard rails for the swiss style forend, not a bad price, 20 dollars, but 12.95 for shipping, but you get three rails.

You'll probably need to remove the hand guard to install the rail, anyway.

I put a Magpul MOE hand guard on my Sport. GunKings has them for $28 with free shipping. They also have the rails. If you buy both, they put the rail in the MOE package and ship both for free. I bought the hand guard and a 7 slot rail for a total of $34.60 delivered by first class mail. Took about 4 days to come in.

The hand guard that comes with the Sport doesn't have a heat shield. The Magpul has an aluminum heat shield and has ears on the front that extend over the FSB to prevent your hand from touching the FSB, which also gets hot.

This is the link to the Magpul MOE at Gunkings:

Can anyone verify which size troy handguards would fit? I'm looking at buying the sport but it has to fit one of these bad boys or else I'll just but the 15-T. Figured il save money this route though. AR15 Battle rails

This is the non free float , std. handguard replacement.

Troy 7" Drop-In BattleRail (Black)

This is the Free float version (both are carbine length)

Troy BattleRail MRF-C 7"

With the free float, you have to cut off the delta ring and then the rail halves fit securely to the upper with no bbl.contact at the sight. The sight/gas block do NOT have to be removed for install and a dremmel makes it easy. Just wrap the upper and bbl. in towels so only the d ring shows. It is soft aluminum and make two slot cuts and remove. The springs just twist off with plyers and you're good to go.

My OR model with Troy MRF-C (Note, no exposed delta ring as with the drop in version)

I don't think the hand guard on the Sport will accept a rail. You'll have to replace it. I recommend the MagPul MOE. Standard hand guards are easy to remove and replace. You can get MagPul rails of different lengths (I think the shortest is 3-inches). That being said...

I am of the opinion that the GripPod is just a gimmick. I've never used one, so I could be wrong. I *do* know that the forward grip doesn't allow as much control as you'd think it would. I've found that gripping the hand guard as far forward as is comfortable with my thumb on top of the hand guard does more to control muzzle flip, allowing a faster return to target. Magpul makes the AFG (angled forward grip) that promotes this hold. You might want to look into that instead of the GripPod.

I originally put a MagPull MOE handguard on my OR model. It didn't hold up to a GripPod. After I started using the GripPod, I noticed some rotational movement on the MOE handguard. I was less than impressed. Of course, you get what you pay for....I should have known.

FWIW.....I've since used a Troy Drop in Battle Rail with the Grip Pod and it worked very well. It has survived two 4 day AR classes since being installed. I now use a Daniel Defense Omega 7 free float hand guard. Both do cost more than the MagPull plastic unit.
