Default MP-15 and CMMG Evolution/India 22 LR Conversion Kit

So I have this MP-15 MOE rifle and the ammo is quite expensive. I see these .22 LR Conversion Kits are available.

I'm thinking about buying a conversion kit for my MP-15 to reduce the cost of practice firing at the range.

I'm interested in the CMMG 22 LR Conversion Kit; probably in the stainless steel version and maybe with the Forward Assist to be able to use the plunger on my MP-15 in the event of a weak miss load.

Has anyone any experince with this model of CMMG in their MP-15? Any experiences and advise are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I can not speak directly to the CMMG converion kit, but I do own an MP15OR and a CMMG Evolution .22 LR rifle.

My CMMG is actually one of thier dedicated uppers with small modes (gb/fs, ..). I put a RRA part kit in a CMMG lower to complete it.

The point is, the bolt in my CMMG upper, except for the collar to barrel adapter, is the same as the conversion. I could write a small book on these. So I'll just list a few main points.

+ The CMMG bolt is execellent IMHO. I strongly recomend the stainless bolt assembly. Not just for easy to clean (which to me is a huge plus) and bling (it does look great); but the ss bolt needs no breakin, and I see almost no people having issue with them. The std bolt is good, but may require breakin, and seem to have a few (not many) more issues. I think ss is worth the extra cash.

+ CMMG has a great bolt hold open/bolt catch adapter (BHOA). With this $20 device, you get a working bolt catch/release. These conversions (genarally speaking on AR to .22 LR conversions), by default, have very little functionality (no working bolt catch, no forward assist, no BHO on last round, ..). That's why I am sort of a CMMG fan, as they have been trying to bring full functionality to the conversion market. We have a 15-22 we love, it has full function, so I see no point in anything less.
You can drop the CMMG BHOA in a std AR lower in seconds, so it's great for a dual use (5.56/.22 LR) setup. It's reasonably priced, and works well. a good reason to go with CMMG.
With the CMMG BHOA you have full function except BHO on last round. That requires CMMG Gen 1 BHO mags. That's the bad, see Mags below.

+ As you mentioned, CMMG has Forward Assist. I don't think any other conversion support that.

Now the BAD:
MAGS.
- The CMMG grey Gen 1 BHO mags are horrible. It's amazing that they got anything to work for BHO in a std Black Dog Ciener style mag; but it is never going to be a reliable solution.
* The CMMG gen 2 BHO mags look promising. But they have been coming next month for many months now.
* You can run with std Black Dog style Mags (forgetting the true BHO follower from CMMG), and they will feed and run reliable, just will not BHO on last round (well except for that sad too tall follower thing).
** If you are really ambitious, you can make modifications to run my favorite .22 LR mags of all the S&W 15-22. But that's a long story and not trivial mods. You wouldn't want to go there in a none dedicated .22 LR AR.

Hope this helps,
Chris

BTW - here an older picture of my "twins". M&P15 OR on left, CMMG .22 LR on right (back when I was using BD mags).

Chris, Thanks for the complete rundown on the CMMG Conversion. That's a lot of typing and I appreciate all your advice.

I would definitely go with the stainless version. In fact, I'm considering the new "India" model they have with all the bells and whistles. This is CMMG's latest effort on the conversion kit. A bit pricey, but what the heck ! This model has a brass chamber lock too for more internal stability.

Thanks again.

One caviat. Running a drop in conversion (as opposed to a full , dedicated upper) runs the risk of fouling your gas system with lead. It can actually clog the port AND the tube if you don't run regular 5.56/.223 through it frequently to "blow the lead" through the system. Jacketed .22LR ammo might be better.

Cobra - no problem, glad to help. I'm a bit obsessed with .22 LR ARs, so they are my favorite subject.
