Smile I now proudly own a M&P15 Sport

I got it a week ago, have shot a few rounds through it, and now will have to get a new credit line.
All I can say is, thank goodness that I can load this round. I shot 120 rounds of factory loads and I had to eat macaroni and hotdogs for supper that night.

Going out tomorrow and work with it. It was a nice thing to find that although the trigger is heavy, it's crisp and I'm going to shoot it for a while before I do anything to it. What a great beginner gun to shoot!

I have had mine for a couple of months now and love it. When I first bought it I thought I would modify it when extra money came in but I like it like it is. I'm not even going to put optics on it yet. I can barely see a 1 inch dot at 50 yds. and I am all over it(rested) with this rifle.

Wife has the camera and is gone for the week-end. I haven't told her about the new gun yet.

So, here's this: Tactical Rifles - Smith & Wesson

Looks exactly like mine except for the arrow and numbers.

Talking Thanks to the LGS!

Thanks. Where I'd originally ordered it informed me a couple weeks ago that it was going to be January before I got it.
Needless to say, I was disapointed to say the least. Just to be fair, I had done much business with Gil over the years and if they could of got me one sooner they would. Unfortunately, Mr. Hebard is basically winding his business down,(He used to be a major S&W distributor) and I think that S&W is sending the new guns to the high volume shops and he's at the lower end of their list. I'd like to add that Gil Hebard was the best thing that could of happened for me as a new guy to gun sports. He mentored me and was a great role model.

I stopped by a fairly new shop to see if they had one. They had two, that a guy had just bought a little earlier in the day.

Much to my surprise, those guys found me one and called me to make sure I wanted it. Are you freakin' kidding?? I was in their shop in under a 1/2 hour, did the paperwork, went back the next day and I now own one. I LOVE it!

If you're ever in Galesburg, look up Galesburg Guns and Ammo. Lots of different guns, mostly tactical oriented, and the goodies to accessorize(read that, suck the money out of pocket types) and very nice people to deal with. Also, Tom's Gun Shop is a nice place to visit. He usually has some gems to check out and Tom is a nice guy also.

Well, time to go to the range!

I picked mine us yesterday and like Hobie1 haven't told my wife about it as yet. Cleaned it thoroghly yesterday as manual requested. I don't know what to do about it as yet, went around looking for accessories for it and found some but haven't purchased any as yet. Looked at my friends Magpul rear stock and like the quietness of it my rattles a little. Love the rifle but where do you stop? Paid $699 for mine saw them a little cheaper on gunbroker but by the time I pay shipping and FFL fee cost was about same.

The difference between a legitimate gun and an "illigimate gun"? Your spouse doesn't know about the 'illigimate gun' -- yet!

In the same boat. Picked up Saturday, haven't had time to hit the range.

Can anyone help me out regarding the hand guard?? Is this replaceable/compatible with the aftermarket ones out there? I see that other M&P 15 models have 2 piece hand guards, and the Sport is one piece and seems shorter. Been looking, can't find specifics.

Any thoughts/suggestions? All I want is to be able to mount a rail for a bipod and light setup.

Can't wait to put some rounds through her!!

Thanks for your time.

The sport should have the same handguard as other M&P 15s, a "one piece" wouldn't be removable without removing the gas block/ft. sight.

Yep, it's two piece. Apparently it's not a one person job to remove it.
Enjoy the new gun!

That's what the manual says and that's what I told my son.

However, he held the stock up to his shoulder in shooting position, pulled the delta ring back with two hands, held it in the rearward position with his first and second fingers on his right hand and promptly removed the hand-guard, 1/2 at a time. Good thing I didn't bet money on it!

I installed an inexpensive quad rail as well as a vertical front grip just to try out. Haven't shot it yet, but it feels pretty good. I said I was going to leave it stock, but got the urge to modify. I'll try not to get carried away.

As others have stated, the Sport has a 2 piece hand guard. Pull back the delta ring and snap it apart.

I put an MOE hand guard on mine and like it a lot. With the MOE hand guard you can put rail sections where you want them to mount accessories, and its considerably cheaper than a quad rail of even reasonable quality.

Ncstar has nice, low priced bi-pods. The one I got from Amazon came with three different attachment fittings. You won't have to remove the hand guard, just attach it to the barrel.

Any carbine length handguard will fit. The unit on the sport is indeed a 2 piece, and it's not bad at all. I carried the M4 with worse attachments previously.
FWIW, the Bipod is a great tool on a longer gun. The beauty of any carbine length AR is the weight (Or lack of) and ease of positioning and delivering fire with close quarters and with many direction changes. There are some lights and red dots that can be mounted on the rifle as it is set up.

Default hand guard removal tool

there is a hand gaurd removal tool i havent gotten to try yet but has been getting some good reviews. have seen em for between 13 and 20 bucks on places such as cheaperthandirt.com. looks like a set of tongs or a V. the closed end slides to the ring you grip and press down. i plan to get one as i just bought a sport myself.

You don't need a tool to remove the handguards. Just pull the tapered delta ring down with one hand and use the other hand to remove them. Have a friend help you if necessary.

Now the old straight delta ring on A1s....whole different story.

I am looking at a sport also. Do you need to pull the front sight post off when you install a scope. How hard it's that?

Most powered scopes (like a 3-9X) will "blur" out the front sight and it won't effect your view. With a red dot like a Vortex or the like can be mounted at a height that will "co witness" the front sight.

Unless you are using something mounted pretty low, the answer is NO. Not necessary to remove the front sight.

Hi all, I am really new here as I have not been around for years. As of yesterday, I am the new owner of the M&P Sport! I was looking at the .223's and had almost decided to get the Ruger Mini 14. Then yesterday morning, I happened on a forum where someone mentioned the Sport. I started reading all that I could and did not take long to decide that my little M&P .40c needed a relative in the family. I was lucky enough to find one locally and whet right down and purchased it. I have not done any target work yet as I got home after dark last night. We live way out in the country with wheat fields all around. I went out and emptied a magazine over the field. I loved it. I think I made a very good buy!!

Welcome to the forum Ron! There's a lot of knowledgeable folks here. I think you will enjoy your stay.

I picked up a Sport recently as well. It works great. You saved some money and in my opinion bought a far superior rifle in every way by choosing the Sport over the Mini 14. I owned a Mini 14 and found it was prone to jamming and was no where near as accurate as an AR.
Enjoy your new rifle and be safe out there in the wheat fields. .223 goes a long way before dropping to the ground. Post some pictures of that Sport when you get a chance.

Just picked up my Sport today too!!!
You simply cannot beat the deal on this rifle...Ar with a lifetime warranty, S&W quality, 5.56 and all for under $600.
I was considering a Kel-Tech rifle to get into the 223 arena for something easy on the wallet when I heard about the Sport....Nothing wrong with the Kel-Tech but it simply doesnt match up to the Sport in so many ways...
Also, just registered for this forum and it looks like there are bunch of good people on here with alot of knowledge....looking forward to reading the posts...

Welcome to the forum Fuzzypiglet! Congratulations on your new Sport. You own an awesome rifle. Look forward to hearing range reports and seeing pictures which I'm sure you plan to post as soon as you can. And yes, there are good people here with knowledge to share. I'm still learning.

I'm new to the forum but have found it useful so far. I've done a lot of research and am pretty convinced that I want to pick up a Sport soon. The fact that you guys all seem to love yours certainly makes me more confident in my decision. My only question is whether anyone has had any issues with the lack of the forward assist and dust cover that many ARs have. I never really thought of it as a problem although some guy at a local gun shop lately tried to convince me I needed a DPMS or Bushmaster for double the price. As far as I know, early ARs didn't have either and I'm not planning on taking the thing to Kandahar (although I have the utmost respect for the men and women that are over there). Is this really an issue or just a salesman trying to sell me something I don't want or need?

Default Gil Hebard guns

Hobie your mention of Gil Hebard Guns had me going to the gun case and pulling out my 1965 or 66? (catalog no 20) I find that it is a great resorce book. Model 27 .357mag at$156.50, model 28 highway patrolman $107.50 and on and on. Had 3 sons to care for then and little xtra cash so few relovers were purchased. Trying to make up for it now.

Enjoy that Sport model I do mine. I made some mods already like pistol grip, hand guards, added optic. More to come.

Got my sport on Friday. Ordered magpul hand guard and hogue grip already along with couple of extra mags.
Also got a TMS one piece scope mount to install a huge scope.

Might have to get a different gas block.

Menthol, the A2 front sight really isn't bad. Well maybe because I've used it for years.

Thinking it might blur the sight picture too much. And kinda liking the idea of floating the barrell. Not in a hurry to do that. Will enjoy as it is for now... Got many paper targets to slay.

a long time ago(~1963) i remember buying a camden made, model 103 high standard supermatic citation bull barrel from Gil Hebard - it came in the mail ! sold it off recently, applied price to a S&W M&P 15 sport.
S&W has produced a real winner in the entrance level/price point/value of the sport.

Hi Ya'll. I ordered a 15Sport yesterday and it either shipped today or it ships Monday, I also got spare 20 and 30 round Magazines. It is coming with an Ultra Dot Pan-A-V holographic sight. I found this forum while searching for Info on the Sport model and am glad I did. The People here seem knowledgeable and friendly. This is my first foray into the AR world and only my second into S&W territory ( I used to have a Model 27 wheel gun). One big question, is the rear sight on the Sport fixed or does it lay down. I have seen a few different pictures of the Sport and some of them show a rigid rear sight and others show a collapsible rear sight. Cant wait to get it into my grubby little paws. Had knee surgery Tuesday and I told my wife (the gun is our Valentine Present to each other) that even if I had to use my walker to go to the range I was going to go shoot it. I was looking at DPMS Panther and Bushmasters but the affordable Bushmasters are being made out of a Carbon Fiber type material (both upper and lower receivers) that I found a little disconcerting. And my nephew has a M&P15 that he got in November and I really liked it. I was really intrigued by the increasing twist rate in the Barrel of the sport and how much it improves accuracy and also doesn't have the milled area in the barrel for a grenade launcher that I always thought caused the barrel to vibrate more than it should. Anyhow I will post pics as soon as I get it...I am so ready! Have Fun!!

Welcome aboard oneyeopn! The newer Sports have been shipping with the Magpul fold down sight (real nice). The older ones have the non-collapable sight. That one is still nice but not as handy as the Magpul. There are still a few of the old production that are shipping, but most seem to now be the Magpul. Where'd you order from? I'd say there's about a 75% chance you'll get the foldable version.

Hi all, new guy here..I just bought a Sport today. I already owned a shotgun (Remy 870 Express) and a handgun (Springfield XDM 9mm), and figured a rifle would be nice to have...so when I saw the M&P in a Gander Mountain ad, I couldn't believe an AR-15 rifle could be that cheap, and from a great company no less. I did some quick research and decided it would be a perfect entry into the AR world. Gander was sold-out, but a local gun shop/range had it for $10 cheaper anyway.

I'm looking forward to trying it out and customizing here and there. The salesman showed me a couple red dot sights, including the Vortex StrikeFire...any recommendations in this regard?

Question Ammo

I'm seriously thinking about buying a Sport. It'll be my first time into the AR15 world. Looks like a good value for the money and I don't plan to add any "goodies" -- at least not for now.

LGS has several types of ammo at decent prices, so I'll probably just buy a few hundred "starter rounds" from him. Most of what he sells has a 55 grain bullet, but he has some Winchester with a 62 grain bullet. I'll just be shooting paper targets, so I don't need "fancy" ammo.

Any advice on which bullet weight to buy? Does one or the other shoot better in the Sport?

The Vortex is pretty decent. My opinion? Find a relatively cheap carbine training course, or say a 3 gun shoot close to you. See what the guys are using. Try to get a chance to try out some different features or more importantly, how easy which setup is to use. What I find I want more is to clearly see, with keeping my eyes open. The small halo sights do not cut it; I don't like the small window much. But everyone's ideal setup is different, as eyesight ability varies so much. (Just like prescription glasses.)

The 1/8 twist will handle stuff from 40gr out to 75 with no real issues. The 55 and 62 are nearly identical for moderate distance shooting (10yards to 200 yards.) Beyond that, bullet BC and weight makes requirements of bullet and barrel more necessary.

My Sport eats everything I feed it so far. I am trying to saty away from steel cased ammo.

Finally had time to shoot mine.. It's a week old. I need to get a cheap red dot sight. I refuse to plonk down tons of $$ for some eotech that is worth almost more than the rifle.
