Default M&P 15 Trigger Reset Issue

Hi all. I have a new M&P 15 i took out to the range today, and after about 30-40 rounds it malfunctioned. The trigger won't reset all the way, so its kinda in limbo between being pulled and being reset. The safety selector is stuck on fire.

If I pull the pin and take a look at the lower's trigger housing everything looks fine, and I can use a tool to release the hammer, but the trigger wont reset. its not a tight sticking, theres a little play in both the trigger and selector. Any thoughts?

Is there a blown primer or some sort of debris down in there under the trigger mechanism? Sometimes it can be hard to spot depending on where it's stuck.

Have you ever taken an AR-15 trigger mechanism apart? If there is no visible debris in there, then the safety, hammer and trigger need to be removed from the lower to find out what's going on. It's likely something with the disconnector or it's spring. Thing is, you need to be knowledgeable in how to diagnose and re-assemble the mechanism, -or- have a competent gunsmith do it, -or- send it to S&W. Messing with the trigger can cause automatic fire and other unsafe/illegal conditions if you don't know what you're doing.

Since it's new, I wouldn't dig too deep although what Dragon said is spot on. However, it's in warranty and if you don't find an obvious cause, contact S&W and send it in. BTW, if I would read all of the posts, I'd would of seen that Dragon already recommended that. Oh well, redundancy works for me.

Thanks guys.

From trying to self-diagnose online I saw others had a similar problem with a primer getting lodged underneath that you couldnt see from above. Took a hooked wire and gently swept underneath and for all I could tell nothings there.

I don't have any experience with taking the trigger out so I'll refrain from that and call S&W and see what they say.

I'll update after the problems solved just in case anyone out there comes across the same thing.

They will send you a shipping label to return the rifle to them for repair. This is the long route, but don't worry they will fix it and it won't cost you anything.

FWIW, education wise, here is a video of Bill Geissele removing a GI trigger to install one of his upgraded ones. (SSA two stage in this case).

The stock trigger and the Geissele are NOT encased as some drop ins are so they are removed and installed about the same. If nothing else it will give you an idea of what is inside your lower. IF you feel adventurous, it is an easy removal and replacement for even minimally mechanically inclined folks. Like they say in the Geico ads, "Even a caveman........". I am proof of that.

Saying a caveman can do it may be a bit of an exaggeration. A caveman's thumb would likely be too big to push the disconnector down to insert the trigger pin....

It is really easy. Since it's the weekend and you can't talk to S&W anyways, watch some videos and see if it's something you feel like tackling yourself. If you run into any issues or problems, ask here and we will get you back on track.

The Geissele is a thing of beauty, isn't it?

After installing and trying out my first one, I got the cold sweets because I realized I just doubled the cost of any future lowers I built. It's hard to be satisfied with less afterward. Luckily I can make a decent trigger out of standard trigger parts now after some experimenting, but boy it's no where near a Geissele.
