Effective range on 15 sport?
So Im thinking of someday(soon) purchasing the M&P 15 Sport. Ive never owned a rifle of any kind, so im curious what the effective range of these rifle are. Im only looking to shoot as far away as 300yards, but thats only after I have learned to shoot from 50-100y. So, is 300y in or out of the effective range of the gun using .223 rounds?
Thanks

300 yards is no problem for an AR-15. You can go out to 500+ yards depending on ammunition, shooter, and optic used with 223/5.56 and the AR platform.

I could qualify for rifleman again if I had to with my Sport. 350yds on a pie plate is not impossible.
As to lethal range, there are 2 schools of thought here. will a .223 kill at 300yds? Yes, they will. (In fact, they will within the next 5 minutes somewhere.......) But- would I shoot a deer at 300yds with a .223? No, I would not. They kill, but will not have the knockdown power to bowl over and spike a deer or hog into the ground at that kind of range for the average gunner. Dragon describes a best case scenario; great optics with an experienced shooter. If the shooting is for predator control or depredation of invasive pigs or goats???? A clean, quick kill is still desired, but not so much a requirement.
For 100-200yd shooting, an AR platform is in its' element and shines.

Was actually just looking to shoot at 300y MAX at my local gun club. Target shooting. Im not a hunter, nor am I a pig/goat slayer. Just looking for accuracy rating if I was to take this thing out to 300y at the range. We have a 600y high powered rifle range and thats where we shoot at 300y. Other wise id just use the 100y range that sits next to the pistol ranges.

I bet you see a lot of ARs on that 600 yard high power range. Reviews are pretty good on the Sport barrel, so you might find yourself trying out the full length of the range on day.
One suggestion: Don't try to shoot little groups with an AR. That's completely not the point of the weapon. Pick a bullseye size, say 4", and try to keep all your shots in that circle. Once you can do that at 25 yards, move it back to 50 yards, or reduce the bullseye size to 3" or 2". See where I'm going? Strive for functional accuracy, not group size, and you will have a lot more fun.

If you can see it,...
you can shoot it. Mil carbine sights don't have a 600 yd setting just for looks.
Check this out:
The M16 Qual Course
open sights, out to 500yds.
And some helpful hints:
