Default Sport now shipping with Magpul rear flip sight

Heads up to anyone in the market for an M&P 15 Sport. S&W has changed the rear sight on this model to a Magpul MBUS rear flip sight. This is a great upgrade, props to S&W for making the change. My LGS just got a new shipment in, and it has the new rear sight. They are selling them for the same price, so it doesn't appear there was any increase in dealer cost.

Be aware that most stores will have old stock with the old sight. You might have to do some looking or waiting if you want the MBUS.

I bought a Magpul MBUS rear sight to work (flip up) with the optic I mounted on my Sport. It would have been a money saving feature for sure. Kudos to M&P again. Our LGS is currently out of Sports. The have sold literally dozens of them. I expect the new shipment will have the new rear sights.

I have the old rear sight on mine. How does the Magpul differ from the original rear sight? Would it be worth it to upgrade?

That depends. Flip sights are nice if you have a red dot, you can fold it out of the way and get a cleaner sight picture. The MBUS also looks a lot cooler than the standard rear sight tower. When actually shooting with the irons sights though, there is no difference.

He's got a different model flip sight, but it shows the concept, and no Magpul thread is complete without a picture of Travis Haley.

Here's a picture of mine with the MBUS and Vortex Strikefire red dot. Co-witnesses with the optic.

Thanks Jayhawk.
It's an el cheapo Utg carbine length quad rail with an el cheapo vertical grip. It all works fine, but not high quality products. I don't use this rifle for anything but target shooting. I like the set up, but am considering Magpul MOE handguard and stock to simplify. I read somewhere that the MOE handguard fits loosely on the Sport. I'd like to find out for sure before I buy.

If you upgrade to a flip up rear site, might consider a Troy or Yankee Hill. Metal and a bit higher quality. JMO.

My MOE handguard feels pretty tight on my Sport, but I don't have a lot to compare it to. I'm using the MOE Vertical Grip (the no rail needed model) with it.

Default Rear sight

Does anyone know where I can get an original rear sight for my Sport? Not the magpul flip up.
Thanks

Mine is tight as well - was actually pretty tight fit to get mine on. Love it!

Dang picture didn't show for me. I got the Vortex Sparc and it arrives today. Mount red dot in front of that then between front and rear flip up?

With that setup, I would put the MBUS all the way to the rear and put the red dot in front of it with MBUS folded down out of the way. I have a 4-power optic on this AR and I like it all the way rearward, so my BUIS (@50 yd zero) is in front of the optic folded down.

Wow. I've never seen anyone mount their optic and buis like that. Are you putting your eye right up to the optic? Do you get enough eye relief? If it were me, I'd shorten the lop on the stock, move the optic forward so that the rear buis could be mounted appropriately. OR just take off the buis and run the trijicon alone.

That's a TA31F which has a proper eye relief of about 1-2 inches when using the bullet drop compensator reticle. The rubber cup is about 1.25", it does go to my eye and aids with careful aimed fire in bright sun and low light using the reticle.

This sight also uses the BAC (Binden Aiming Concept) which simulates a 1x red dot system and having experience with several 4x Trijicon models, this one is my favorite. I had quite a bit of fast-shot-pressure training with an Armson OEG which uses the BAC system and the BAC feature with this sight comes very natural to me. My brain was trained for it. Using the sight with BAC, the relief can be inches.

Add my favorite AR optic to my favorite carbine stock position places the eyepiece all the way back. It looks different from the side but it works wonderfully both with careful aimed and BAC quick reaction. And there's just enough room for a Troy BUIS cowcatcher for just-in-case.
