Enjoy your new toy. I had the intention of going to the range this morning until I saw it was 26 and windy out.

Step back from the target to about 50 yds and keep at it. Then, back up some more. It's a really accurate carbine, and with practice you can shoot like that at 50,70 yds. At 100yds, your groups will open up a bit, but still be good.

Nice shooting....but that gun will cost you nothing but more money! I bought mine, a M&P15PS, about 6 months ago and so far I have put a EOTech sight on it, a new pistol grip, a Geissele trigger, and a few other goodies. Will probably add a few more touches, which means more money spent!

Here is a target from last week....shot at 100 yards by my wife, a 67 year old grandma to boot.

Here is my 13 year old grandson, shooting an AR for the first time in his life. He also did real well first time out.

55 feet is pistol range. Take that AR back to the 100 yard line and see what it can do.

Go granny go! It's cool you're doing that with them. I like sharing range time with my boys, and hopefully my daughter when I feel she's of age. I salute you sir.

Will a Sport work if I choose to do 3-gun? My son has it in his head that he will need a 18" H-bar, free float....

So his notion is a $1800 rifle.

Sport would work, but from others I've talked to outside this forum, a longer sight radius is ideal. He may be on the right track when length is concerned, maybe not price. Take a gander at American Spirit Arms ASA A2 rifle. 20 inch barrel, nostalgic profile, $1200.

You could use it, but you would be at a severe disadvantage to guys with properly equipped ARs.

The only range I have been able to find only ones to 25 yards...

Start out with the sport. As he progresses, he will get pretty darn good. When his shooting has progressed, then buy a dedicated upper for about $400/450 to add to the mix. If he's looking for superior downrange accuracy he will be looking into a 20+ inch barrel.

Start him with the simple rifle, and add an optic, then move it up as his skills progress. Remember, no one drives an Indy car first. We all start in a parking lot or dirt road........
