Default All M&P 15 Sports...no M&P 15T's??? Or any others?

So, I just surfed through all these M&P 15 threads, and all I'm seeing are M&P Sports, no others. Now I've done lots of research and I was wondering if there was something I was missing. I'm also looking into getting a M&P 15 soon. Your thoughts on the Sport and/or others if you have some experience with more than just the Sport model??? Thanks guys and gals...

Right on man, did you get it for a good price? What furniture do you plan on adding to it? Look forward to some updates and maybe some pictures later on. Again, congrats my friend.

It's because us 15-Sport owners are working our way up the MSRP ladder.

Honestly, the 15-Sport is my first AR purchase. I wanted one that didn't suck and fit into my budget. 2-birds, 1 AR.

The rest of the M&P15 line are really nice rifles. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. What it boils down to is: Cost vs features. The Sport has sights, the OR does not. And, the OR, or the T cost more. Yes, they have different ornaments hanging on them. And they have the FA and dust cover. But for shooting??? The rifle knows not whether it has these things, or a quad rail from the factory. All the rifle knows is Feed, bang, eject.

Several guys here have bought a Sport for like $650 out the door. Added $250 in a rail, secondary optic, and a sling. The rifle is complete, for less than nearly any other AR rifle can come close to in price. It's a value thing, and many people figured this stuff out in the mid 1970's, when Ford gave us the Pinto, Chevy gave us the Vega, and Toyota gave us the Corolla. It's value, plain and simple.

Default My new Sport

Just bought it from Gander Mountain
I haven't fired it yet, I believe I am supposed to completely clean it of factory grease and oil it before I do, is this correct ?

This is me all the way. I started off with the intention of building my 1st AR but along the way discovered the great price of the Sport. I continued down the path of planning out a build and tracking cost when I was done I was looking at nearly double the cost of what I got my Sport for. That lead to a few months of heavy research on the Sport and the materials used in it as well as the few things it's lacking vs other AR's.

Then the most important factor was actual owners and their take on the Sport.

All in all its a great weapon with a great price tag and a strong reputation.

That said, I still plan on building my next AR from the ground up.

I got my sport for $599. It got me in the door and taught me AR-15 basics and how they work.

Now, I'm already thinking of building another AR now that I've learned a lot about how to build one

All M&P AR's are fine weapons. Its just that the Sport is an economy model you can accessorize yourself when you can do so.

Sport owners ( not all of them) tend to be new to the AR world, hence lots of questions and "new" discoveries.

The Sport is just the "flavor of the month" due to its substantially lower price when compard to the other models. Before that, it was the OR model. I have a MOE myself...

I have the MOE also. I looked at the Sport and the MOE. Even though the MOE was more I wanted the forward assist and dust cover. I know you can get by without them, but putting my thumb on the bolt carrier to push the bolt closed when hot doesn`t appeal to me much.

Yep, "OR" for optics ready for me. If you plan to add a scope or don't like the FS triangle/gas block, the OR ends up a better choice, IMO. Any savings are easily eaten up in some changes from stock configurations. However, had I been given the choice I probably would have picked the 1/8 5r bbl. over the 1/9 chrome lined on my OR. I don't varmint hunt so I would rather have the slightly faster twist and melonite finish. Not a big deal either way for me, shooting Lake City 55 or 62 grn. most often.

More like the gateway AR platform. Every addiction starts with an affordable taste.

I'm going to have to agree with you. I do like the FA a lot! I thought about the Sport as well as my first AR purchase, strictly for the price, but I do like the dust cover and FA.

The rails on mine have a really great finish on them, feels comfortable for the most part, no super sharp edges, free floats the barrel, and is solidly built. Would put some type of covers on them anyways. The slots would be bothersome after some extended shooting IMO. My 15t came with ladder covers for the rails. I put on magpul xt's, prefer the wider coverage they give.

Nice nice, thats good to hear. I just wanted to hear some thoughts about them since I've been seeing a lot of people swapping them for some Troys and some others.

Which 15t are you referring to that does NOT come with a troy rail already installed? I know the 811001 15t has the 10" troy quad rail already on it.

The 811041, model 15T, has a 10" anti-twist free floating quad rail (patent pending) that I believe is NOT a Troy quad rail.

I may be wrong, but these are the facts I found from my research.

I bought a M&P 15 PS rifle about 8 months ago, have fired boxes of my own reloads through it and it has been flawless and very accurate. I don't brag about it too much because I get tired of getting into the DI versus Piston debate, but for me I wouldn't have any other gun. It is super easy to clean, is as reliable as any other weapon I own or have owned. I have equipped it with a EOTech XPS2, a Stark grip with a built in sling mount, a Geissele Super Semi-Automatic Enhanced (SSA-E) Trigger, and flip up iron sights that co-witness with the EOTech.

Even my grandson shoots it pretty good...target is at 100 yds.

I did look into the PS, but I haven't heard too much about them. It's also a little more out of my price bracket, but it still lingers in the back of my mind. How much easier is it to clean? Sorry for the noob questions, but I've never owned an ar-15.

I've got a M&P15A and the wife's got a M&P15. Both are stock with the exception of red dots on both with no plans to add anything else to them.

We've put about 1000 rounds through each.

My bad, I was thinking of the 811008 which is a 'X', not a 'T'

The piston assembly is removed from the gas block, wiped off with a rag and some Hoppes 9, and reinstalled. The bolt and carrier are cleaned the same way. No carbon buildup to deal with. The gas does vent out through the front of the handguard, but I just wipe it off as well. The gas block does get hot...same as a DI gun...so I installed a Midwest metal front sight instead of the polymer Magpul sight, which I did install for the rear sight.

I have a M&PAR15T that I use as a duty weapon. It currently has 12,500 rounds down the barrel of which 4000 are 5.56. I also have 2 M&PAR15A ( I got these on a LEO purchase a couple years ago for $618.00 each. They are safe queens. I just got a M&PAR15/22 from my lovely wife for Valentines Day. I look forward to setting this up and shooting it.

I trust the Smith and Wesson AR's with my life. I'm not saying they are the best or worse, I'm just saying I've yet to have a FTF or FTE. I'm also a Colt armor and enjoy them too.

So from your experience, do you think it's worth the extra money to purchase that weapon over DI?? I don't mind the cleaning maintenance, but less cleaning means more time for other things =]

I traded a Ruger Mini-14 for my M&P 15PS, so the cost to me was about the same as if I had purchased the Sport. The Mini operated on the piston system and I wanted to stay with that because of its reliability. The cost is something that is a personal decision. Another argument is the "The piston system rifle weighs more" or "all those extra parts increase the chance of failure". So out of curiosity I removed and weighed the two major components...came to a whopping 6 ounces. I am confident I can handle the extra weight! "Carrier Tilt" is another criticism often heard, but I can say that after 8 months of shooting my rifle there are no signs of wear on the bolt carrier or buffer tube.

Every major gun manufacturer is now making a piston AR, including the Sig 556. The Military will soon be issuing contracts for a new weapon system...will be interesting to see which system they choose

Yea I actually looked into purchasing a Sig 556 Swat, because of the piston system. I've probably heard even pro/con reviews on the rifle. I still really like it, but I'm hearing so much bad about Sig's CS. And that sorta steered me away and looking more at a m&p AR.

Piston guns are still in their earlier stages of developement IMHO. There really is no industry standard yet either. Besides piston guns may run cooler for the BCG, but they run hotter up front and are nose heavy. You still have to clean the piston system, even if the BCG is cleaner. So its six of one half dozen for the other. Just my 3 cents.

Guess you didn't read my 2 cents.....weight of the M&P 15 piston is 6 ounces, the gas block runs no hotter than a DI gun. The gas is vented through the hand guard instead of out the ejection port, so I simply wipe off the front part of the hand guard when finished shooting.

The arguments will be around for awhile...same thing happened when car manufacturers started making cars with automatic transmissions. People bad mouthed them and said they would never last......

I've always heard the gas piston is a cleaner operator, I doubt the weight would even be noticable. I'm sure they don't have the occasional spring sound either.

This is also what I've heard, and as far as weight, I believe the Sig 556 is noticeably heavier. That's one complaint I've heard about that. But I've heard that the M&P 15PS wasn't too much heavier in the front end. I'm willing to save a lil more for an AR that is easier to clean.
