If the S&W is not top shelf.....
Ok I hung out with my dad today....we took about an 8 hour road trip and stopped by some of our favorite Gun Stores, all little guys no big chain stores. In none of these stores did I see any S&W M&P's. I saw a ton of DPMS's and they were made out of plastic, more than our beloved M&P's. I saw a few new Bushmasters, funny thing about plastic receivers, they dont look right. In one store, the smallest of them all, I saw 167 used Bushmasters, Colts, Armalite, and DPMS's, some even were the HBar, heavy duty versions. These people were stripping off the rear sights and putting carrying handles on them as fast as they could..getting ready for a gunshow, I saw every kind of flash suppressor I have ever seen on these guns, all carbines, all tactical quad rails, mostly magpuls, Dpms and then just a few odds and ends for rear sights, gonna sell them separately, $675 for the colts $700 for the bushmasters. We all know that they dont really wear out, sometimes you have to make repairs. All semi-auto. So where are these all coming from and if they are so good why is there a ton of used ones out there, who the heck would put an AK-74 flash suppressor on a AR15A3 colt ( I saw 5 I remember) Oh if it is a freefloated barrel and handguard and the back of the front sight is rubbing on the handguard is is still freefloating?...Can someone more in tune with the outside world explain to this country boy whats up?

I just wonder why there are so many, and I mean many surplus carbines being sold, where are they coming from and most of all, what are they being replaced with and why? I guess that would be it, I just got a little windy! and if the rear of the front sight is rubbing on the free float handguard is it still free floating?

Free float is in reference to the barrel. Nothing from the point where the barrel affixes to the upper receiver touches the barrel.

I think that there are a bunch of used AR's on the market because of the EBR (Evil Black Rifle) buying binge that occurred when Obama was elected.
Folks panicked thinking he'd reinstate the Clinton era AWB, and rushed to buy either to own; or as a possible "pre-ban" investment to sell later for a profit.
Demand for EBR's far outstripped supply, driving prices ridiculously high. It didn't matter who made it, or the quality.
All of a sudden, new AR manufacturers popped up to meet demand & make a buck. Some machine shops started cranking out AR components such as upper & lower receivers. Delaware Machinery is a good example of this.
The AWB never came back...the economy tanked (even worse than it already was)...bunches of people needed to cash out at a loss...EBR demand contracted & slowed..
It's about the same time back when I couldn't find ammo anywhere because people were panic buying & hoarding ammo.
My LGS has a full racked wall of used AR's of all sorts. If I was confident in my ability to examine, evaluate, and judge a used AR, I'd buy a used one.
My LGS won't take in any AR's in on trade (unless it's top tier) because they can't move them. The used inventory does not turn quick enough.

Wow, them cheap.
Hope he doesn't have inside info about the gov. taking our weapons . Last I saw the NRA was having a hard time with weapons bills. Though we always win, seems recent bills have been harder to fight.
