I'm trying to build a cheap AR and thought that the Sport upper would be a good option. So is it possible to order just the upper and slap it on a different lower?

I don't see a S&W 15-Sport upper offered for sale on the S&W website.

You might try lurking the more popular AR boards to see if someone wants to trade or sell a 15-Sport upper.

IMO, the 15-Sport's 1:8 5r Melonite treated barrel is the gem of the upper. I wouldn't trade it for anything. If I wanted a FA & dust cover, I'll transfer the 15-Sport's upper parts into a upper receiver with a FA & dust cover.

I'll second that! While I was looking for the Sport, I could have purchased may other rifles for about the same price, including the M&P 15 ORC. I passed though because I specifically wanted the melonited barrel with 1:8 twist and 5r rifling. The guy at the gunshow selling the M&P 15 ORCs thought I was nuts. Maybe I am....but that is what I wanted.

I'd like to have a sport stripped lower to do a build on.

You can get a S&W M&P 15 stripped lower and use a Magpul trigger guard to get the same effect as the 15-Sports integrated trigger guard.

Or, Crracer could buy a Sport and sell the upper to samuraiadam17!

You might get lucky one day and find someone willing to sell their upper after they have build a new upper for their sport.

I may go this route one day...but not yet

I have a sport upper that I would sell. I just got one a couple months ago and was wanting a varmint upper.
