Default Question about handguard and foregrip on Sport

Sorry guys being new to the AR platform I can't seem to figure this out by reading other posts. I'd like to put a Magpul angled foregrip on my Sport. Is there a way to mount it without replacing the hand grip or do I have to?
And if I don't what do I need to install to mount it?
Thanks for any help.

Please link which grip you'd like to use.
Possibly as simple as adding a lower rail to your stock handguard, then attach the handle?

WIKD wants to use the Magpul AFG (Angled Fore Grip).

WIKD will need an add on handguard rail to the OEM handguard. I found these by Midwest Industries

Midwest Industries: AR Handguard Rails

You'll need to remove the OEM handguard to attach the rail sections.

1. Clear & safe the rifle.
2. Put the butt end down on a solid surface.
3. Pull down on the delta ring.
4. Separate the upper & lower halves of the handguard.
5. Install the rail.
6. Pull down on the delta ring.
7. Affix rail section to lower handguard.
8. Install the upper half of the handguard, then install the lower half.

I've managed to pull down on the delta ring myself. I push down on the same 1/2 of the delta ring as the 1/2 handguard section I am removing/installing.

It can be a frustrating thing to do on your own. If you have a friend available, one of you can compress the delta ring and the other can remove/install the handguard.

You can also buy a handguard removal tool. After removing and installing the hand guard a few times on my own, I finally broke down and bought the tool. I wish I did it sooner.

Amazon.com: Tapco .223/M16 Handguard Removal Tool: Sports & Outdoors

WIKD, this is my opinion only... the OEM handguards on the 15-Sport do not have heat shields. It may or may not be a big deal to you. If heat shields sound like a good idea and you'll already be taking the handguard off, you might want to replace the OEM handguards for handguards with heat shields. There are M4 style handguards that have heat shields.

I highly recommend the Magpul MOE handguard. Has a heat shield, looks good and feels very nice.
Side note: My handguard fits very nicely unlike a few that have posted about it being loose.

The one I just ordered has the heatshields in it plus an angled hand stop built in. I hope it works as good as it looks.

Man these pics is making me want my M&P really bad that I got ordered. Mine comes with the all the MOE stuff but with the straight down handle on the forgrip. I think I might like that angle grip and have to get one of them to.

You have the MOE VFG. It's attached to the MOE lower handguard half with a couple hex head screws with oblong nuts. Blue thread locker is used to prevent the screws from vibrating out.

If I remember right, you ordered a new M&P midlength MOE? Remember, you can reposition the VFG to where it's most comfortable for you. You've got more position options with the midlength handguard than I do with my carbine handguard.

I mainly use my VFG as a hand stop more than a grip. For me, it's an index point that helps me maintain consistent weak hand position on the handguard.

If I need to, I can still use the VFG as a grip.

The Magpul AFG is just a hand stop reference point. If you want to install one on a MOE handguard, you'll need to install Magpul rail section on the bottom of the lower handguard.

I had an AFG2 on my 15-22. It just didn't work out for me well. I contemplated installing it on the 15-Sport, but the MOE handguard shape all on it's own is the most comfortable for me.

If you have a friend or have any way to hold an AR with the Magpul AFG on it, try it out before you buy one. The AFG is polarizing. You'll either love it or hate it.

Welcome to the M&P 15 money pit. Next up you'll want a red dot or magnified optic. Then you might want a Magpul enhanced butt pad. You'll experiment with different weighted buffers. Then a sling... then a BAD lever... then a Magpul M.A.I.D. grip with a grip insert for a spare bolt & firing pin or 3 extra rounds or batteries...

Yup. A fun money pit.

Indeed, if I could only post pix with my phone, I haven't got that figured out yet.

.... I also just wanted to add, we were taught to use the magwell as our weak side grip, now take into consideration every military unit believes in something different, I feel it most comfortable for me training this way for many years, shooting this way will change too based on your frame. I will at some point break tradition and may experiment with the AFG.

I to was taught to use the magwell as my weak side grip, and I find myself doing it to this day. The AB Arms forward handguard should be her saturday or monday (hoping saturday) with the build in handstop and the wide stippled base grip I am thinking it will be more comfortable and steady.

If using the magwell as a grip is the way you've been trained to manipulate an AR/M16, why not just roll with it?

Maybe a Mako AR magwell grip will be more comfortable & natural to you than a VFG or AFG.

I have been looking at those anyway. I want one and will have one.

Found one on eBay for a good price. Bid on it Free shipping under $20 (if that is a good price, everything for these guns seems to be pricey)

Is there any advantage to getting a certain number slot rail when I add the hand guard for the angled fore grip?

You just need to get one long enough for what you are going to mount. (e.g. most light mounts just need a 3-5 slot rail, while a scope might need a 7 or longer)

Get the longest one. Once mounted, it will give you the greatest range of adjustment for you to find the position most comfortable to you.

You're welcome! Always happy to help.

I bought this delta ring compression tool:

Amazon.com: Aim Sports Ar15 Delta Ring Wrench Removal Tool: Sports & Outdoors

I can remove/install handguards without the tool. Without the tool it's a frustrating job that takes longer than it should.

I shot a quick video. I first try to compress the ring by hand, and get frustrated. Using the tool and voila! Job done quick and easy.

AR Delta Ring Compression Tool - YouTube

I did fumble reinstalling the lower 1/2 of the handguard. It was hard to see what I was doing while looking at the camera's display.

OK I spoke too soon. Just got notified my handguard was not in stock and placed on BO. And I can't seem to find a MOE in OD anywhere else so I guess I'll just have to wait a while longer.

Brother, you ain't kidding. I just searched my regular go-to internet retailers and the OD green carbine length handguard is like trying to find a unicorn.

Heck, there's a used one on E-bay that's hit $30, and there's still a few hours left on the auction.

Is there a reason you can't add a strip of Magpul rail to the bottom of the factory hand guard? It appears to already have holes in it.

You should be able to add a rail section to the bottom of the OE hand guard. As was said above, I'd try one of the AFG before buying. I thought they looked pretty cool some years back. A friend got one and let me try it. To say it was uncomfortable was an understatement. I'm not a fan of fore grips anyway, but I find a standard vertical grip more adaptable as it gives you a number of options for hand placement.

As a brace similar to an AFG

Simply as a vertical grip

Or as a hand stop

There's my 2 cents.

You can add a rail, just not the Magpul rail... at least not with the parts included in the bag. But they do make rail sections that will mount to the standard handguard through the vent holes.
