Finally got a moment of nice weather yesterday and I took off after work for the range. I shot up 5 Mags of various kinds of ammo, 5.56 Federal, .223 American Eagle and .223 Tula. It ate up everything with no issues. I expected the Tula to give me issues but you know it did fine, no troubles at all and in fact it seemed fairly accurate.

Anyhow, what I did notice is that my Rifle was incredibly loud. Now, I do not have a lot of experience with rifles so at first I thought it was just me but a fellow who is a long time rifle shooter stopped by and mentioned that he had heard me a few houses down and assumed it was a higher caliber.

He mentioned that it could be because it's short, is that it and what have other's noticed? Also, mine is a New York variety so there is no muzzle device on the end of it..could that be it? I can have a muzzle break installed but it must be pinned in place so I'd have to have an gunsmith do it.

My Sport seems loud also but I always wear hearing protection, either my electronic muffs or ear plugs. When shooting you should always wear ear protection. Muzzle brakes redirect the sound. When I shoot my 8x57 rifles with m/b's on them people a mile away are thinking I am shooting elephant guns and people when I go to a real range become uncomfortable because the sound is redirected backwards and sideways. But the bottom line is my Carbine is louder than I remember AR rifles to be.

5.56 just has a loud crack, the pitch is different than a large caliber, and having that crowned muzzle doesn't help. I can't shoot mine with out plugs, but I can shoot other stuff with out.

No dust cover or FA changes the harmonics of the ratzastatz and results in harmful decible levels!

Guess we need to call Red Jacket. If they can suppress a .50 cal, they can probably quiet that Sport down for you. It will take some R&D though, cuz "its nevah been done befoah" :^)

LMAO....I think I did when I was married to wife #1, but I havent since then and now I am married to wife #4 and the last two didnt watch daytime soaps at all, but they watch their primetime soaps

In trolling the forums and reading some magazines that is really the biggest complaint of the Sport is how unusually loud it is. When I shot mine I was wearing plugs and still lost hearing in my left ear for a little while. I'm going to use plugs and muffs next time.

Sport doesn't sound any louder than my buddies BCM carbine.

thats the round. It barks, I've shot a number of ARs and they are all the same.

Capt. I think its due to a lack of a muzzle brake.

I thought a muzzle brake will make the perceived sound louder. Instead of the sound pushing out and forward, the sound gets redirected a little rearward and to the sides.

JaPes that is my experience. I have some electronic muffs and they work very well. Course I have hearing aids also (too Many years standing in front of Guitar Amps)

Muzzle brakes don't make perceived sound louder, they make actual sound louder...Especially to people next to you at the range.

At a public range, muzzle brakes are just plain rude.

And completely unnecessary on a 5.56 weapon. If the recoil of your AR is too much for you that you need a muzzle brake, you need to find a different hobby, like knitting!

To the original question: Yes, .223/5.56 guns are loud! Always use hearing protection.

If you think they are loud when shooting them..... try being on the other side of one. They are a LOT more menacing sounding that way!

I live in MA and am stuck with a compliant barrel with no brake/suppressor. It is a little louder than a rifle with brake.

But, my AR is still quiet compared to when I fire my Mosin M44.

After my range trip today, I believe I would have to agree. There was someone there with a new Colt AR and yeah it was just as loud as mine...it's just the round. Even standing next to someone shooting one tho, you can feel the wave of force coming out of the gun...just a lot of power there.
