Default AR carbine, offhand shooting question?

Hello,

I've recently been shooting my first AR and have a question about group sizes shooting offhand with iron sights at 30-50 yards.

It's a carbine with 16" barrel.

I'm no great shooter with a rifle, spent much of my Iowa youth shooting at--and missing a lot of--pheasant with a 16 gauge shotgun.

I'm getting groups of about 6"-8" at @ 30-50 yards.

I'm betting some folks with iron sight will do much, much better.

Just wondering if that's about the kind of group size to be expected for someone starting out with a carbine-length AR, shooting offhand.

Thanks for any insight,

Heekma

Off hand shooting is a practice skill beyond the basics of sight alignment, trigger control and breathing control.

A carbine from a bench should get you under 2 MOA at 50 yards. Start there and progress to freehand when you can get tight groups that way. 1MOA from a bench at 100 yds. is a reasonable goal for a shooter with "young" eyesight, IMHO.
