Indeed. Most of us put on chest-high pond waders before visiting some firearms websites. The B.S. has become entertainment to me.

I think most people agree on this. The AR built around a minimum set of specifications to work. I'm not talking about mil-spec. I'm talking about the basic part dimensions, function, and clearances to get an AR platform to work.

IMO, the mil-spec monkeys are locked into one moment in time. Mil-spec is a nice starting point, but it's not the end-all-be-all of AR construction.

S&W upended the AR elitists with the 15-Sport. The 15-Sport keeps up with the high dollar AR's just fine, without having to resort to exotic materials.

Agreed. Common sense + a little elbow grease + a few parts, and the end result is a rifle custom fit to you.

I consider myself to be a Sith anyways... they have more fun. I wear wool pajamas, scuff my feet on the carpet to build up an electric charge. Then when I shock someone, I scream out "I'M A SITH AND I HAVE A 15-SPORT".

I think that folks also forget that the genesis of the AR platform is Eugene Stoner's work on the AR-10, M16, & AR15. Those designs were developed in the 1950's, and fielded in the 1960's.

It's 2012. The basic AR design has been floating around for about 62 years. The design has been updated & tweaked over the years, the biggest tweak in the mid-1990's with chopped down M4. Then the introduction of the piston system. I'm simplifying a bit, but that's it in general.

As time progresses, technology progresses, leading to advances in materials & manufacturing processes. We expect our firearms to evidence these advances.

Maybe.... just maybe... the basic AR platform design is rapidly approaching or has come against what I call the upgrade wall.

No matter the application of the advancements in materials & manufacturing processes yield little or no appreciable positive effect on the performance of the AR platform.

I can take the design plans for a flint-lock pistol, build it out of modern materials but still end up with the same performance as an original flint lock. Materials & production method aren't the issue in improving accuracy. The design of the flint lock pistol has it's limits.

I think that the folks who take one too many big gulps from the AR-fanboy Kool-Aid have lost a little perspective in their chase for negligible gains.

C'mon man. You just don't get it. If you were tromping in a desert CQB environment in Crapstanistan, you'd want that dust cover and forward assist. Don't you know that?

I love my 15-Sport too.

Dinosaurs may not be dead. I think the Loch Ness monster is real, and it's a plesiosaur.

And I will bloviate on, all the time sporting a pompadour.

Oh look! It's a hunting rifle with a dust cover and a forward assist!

Really, that old saying ain't no hunting rifle ever had a dust cover on it is well, kinda lame. Think about it. Most are a bolt action rifle with a receiver that's what, well over an inch wide? You'd have some sort of u shaped dust cover flipped out to the side of your gun. Not very practical. And let's not forget, that happens only if you are shooting open sights, cuz ain't not way it's flipping open with a scope...

Stuff evolves, times change. different strokes for different folks. Every cloud has a silver lining. blah blah blah.....

I may never understand why people feel the need to justify anything they have to anyone else or get offended if someone else happens to not agree with what's best for everyone else.

What I will do is let me vivid imagination run wild and come up with stories to make fun of many, many things.

It's an Ergo Suregrip. It has a press fit rubber flap cover for the base, but I wouldn't call it storage...maybe for a couple of button cell batteries or a few dollar bills. haha

Every hobby has it's share of elitests...from dogs to cameras, to cars and guns.

Now if the Sport were jamming constantly and shooting 8" groups at 100 yards I may feel buyers remorse for not picking up that Novetske N4 for $1300. But it's not. It's a bargain basement priced winner in my book.

thats a Rossi in 45 colt, I got a great deal on it from a cousin who held it for a year while I saved up for it. She is sweet, brass receiver, with Stainless everything else. I dont know why I wanted her but I really did and I have no regrets in fact I just ordered 100 rounds of ammo from freedom ammo for her. They are the old timey AR's

I just looked it up MSRP of $370, the more I look at it the uglier it becomes, I think the flash hider is what put it over the top, then I saw a pic with the buttstock extended. Someone at Mossberg was smoking way too much of something, way too much of something. But I have to admit they found a market that is totally untapped and likely to stay that way. I will wait on the price of them to come down and it will then I will pick one up in 30-30 just so I can own the ugliest gun on the block. Hang a flashlight on it and a lazer and maybe a gripod with the bipod in it. I hope I didnt offend anyone in my musings but...

I am the phase of deciding if I am going to buy my fist gun (which would be a sport). Watching this thread makes me want to buy one just so I can post a picture.

I want to change out the furniture to all Magpul stuff but I need to chose a color, any suggestions or preferences?

Those preferences are yours, there are many options but it boils down to you and what you want.

I don't know that mine is "tricked out", I'm trying to avoid putting anything unnecessary on it. But I did a little paint so that might qualify. Only thing missing is the scopes throw lever which is coming soon.

Also added a picture of my XD-40.

What paint did you use. I used a snap-on touch up paint called extreme green. I like your paint job.

I used a Sharpie Paint Marker in Lime Green. Did the "Fire" and "Safe" indicators in red and white. I dig that on the HKs. I find the paint markers very easy to work with and they dry very fast. The colors seem to hold up well over time.

Thought about going with gold on the logo , but this is a working gun, not a show piece. Not to say it wouldn't look good. Perhaps someone else will try it out and post pictures?

I have looked at those bipods, which size did you get and how do you like them, do you flip them up or take them off when you put your rifle away? How sturdy are they when they are fully extended? Lots of questons.

The bipods are UTG TACTICAL/Sniper Profile Adjustable Height Universal Bipod with Rubberized Stand from amazon.

I ordered two one on my 15 only swivels approx 45 degrees but can have a washer placed under the bolt to obtain 360 degrees like my other one.It is 10 inches min from bottom of rail to deck adjustable to12 inches total height with a forward or backward movement of 1 in.

I shot the 15 with the legs locked out fully and locked into my shoulder and was very pleased with the stability and I keep the legs locked in the up position for storage on my 15 the legs point to the front on my 15-22 to the back.

I hope this info helps you if I forgot anything please let me know and I will try to answer it.

lol i wish my wally world sold lake city M855. They used to in the cans. They only sell the federal .223 in 100 round packs ugh. I had to order that M855 from palmetto state armory. But yes, i do that with the steel cases since it eats it like candy, they are only 4.50 a box.

I didn't go too crazy on my Sport. Just changed out the furniture to FDE and added a VFG.

Great pics! As soon as Palmetto gets me my "stuff" I will do a before and after. I am also waiting on my buddy to acquire me an M4 front sight and some picattany hand rails. It's nice having access to free stuff.

I love the comments from Rod and the FAS! I will say I have been to Iraq and Afghanistan and never has the FAS been needed. Has it for others of course, why else did it get invented. I'm sure the one time I would need it I would be screwed but luckily I carry a sidearm or two, depends on the pants I am wearing that day. I will say after I locked and loaded a round maybe I remembered to close the dust cover and maybe not. Once the rounds started flying it stayed open until I got back to my bunk. I will say my weapon always worked when I needed it and I did clean it whenever I had time. I personally don't think a little mud and water on the bolt will keep it from firing. Its a reliable design that works.

The whole is buying an Eotech or Aimpoint a waste of money a valid argument, doubt it. I have seen many a Eotech's take fail in the field. Personally I hate them. I had an Aimpoint Comp2 on my M4 in Iraq and I loved it. I also had an ACOG and that is a great sight when you need a zoom but for me its not that easy to grab my rifle and acquire a target with it. Buy what you can afford and what works for you and don't forget you have iron sights and as long as they are zeroed they will probably never fail you! Unless you bend your front sight post like I did. How did I do that I have no idea but luckily I fixed it before I needed to rely on it.

All this lever action makes me wish I had one and I am thinking that will be my next purchase.

I don't have any experience with the other forums but I will say everyone here is kind and helpful. I do get a laugh every now and then when reading the posts.

Love the Sport!! My son got one just before the madness and it has been PERFECT, eats cheap steel ammo like candy, something those REAL guns choke on with regularity. He dressed it with a used Troy full floater quad front furniture and a red dot. gonna try some pics later. I ran a M-16 back in the 70's that was temperamental, this Sport just ROCKS!

Trash Can Man, love that mount for the scope, very different. I assume that came with the scope.

Beautifully done, that's the way I'm looking to set one up.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The scope mount was an additional $50.00 from Nikon. It can be mounted any way you chose [turned 180 degrees if needed,as per Nikon] I chose this configuation in order to set the proper eye releif while mounting the scope as far forward as possible for charging handle clearance. The mount is specificly made for AR's so the height and everything is correct. These photo's are from Nikons website. Believe it or not, you cannot see the front sight at all with this 3X mag.

The stand was just made from a piece of Zebrawood [Zabrano] I had lying around. Not a practicle work stand.
I use it to "air out" the Sport which I keep in a hard Pelican case.I have heard good & bad things about storing a rifle in a air tight case, so I air it out often.

Trash

Default Upgrades

So I added a new carbon fiber free floating hand rail from lancer. The 15". And a bushnell red dot. It's a work in progress but getting there.

Yeah, it's a 15" on a 16 barrel. It comes right to the end of the flash suppressor. There are a couple good options cheaper than what I have but all relatively the same price. VTac has the Alpha rail made by Troy that will extend out for $239. It's a quad rail system. The lancer I have is carbon fiber and the rail attachments are pricey. Also on the sport you will need to replace the gas block with a low profile gas block less than .8. It's really quick to do. If you want to maintain the iron sight and original gas block up front on the sport you can also look at the Vtac delta rail.

I have converted 2 Sports to Rifle length handguards, one of them is a couple of pics above yours that I have been using for over a year. I would probably go with the Nordic XL just because I like the smaller diameter. I ran the Nordic Rifle length on my first one. This Sport with the DD Modular 12.0 was a gift and a nice one I must say. I also bail on the flash hider for better accuracy.
Oh and welcome to the forum.
