Let's See Some Tricked Out Sports
I've heard alot of people talkin' smack about the M&P 15 Sport's lack of a forward assist and a dust cover. I've even heard some of the more foolish of them actually call them worthless. This is foolish because so far S&W can't seem to build them fast enough. and recently I noticed that DPMS has put out a similar model to copy it.
I've had one for about 9 months or so and have fallen in love with this rifle. I don't miss the FA or dust cover at all.
I'd love to see some of the Sports that other satisfied owners have tricked out.

The DPMS, the one without forward assist or dust cover is the Sportical. I saw a bunch at the last gun show so I gave it a quick look over. Quick was all that was needed, it truly looked like a ****. What stood out is the upper over hung the lower receiver by what appeared to be a good 1/16" or better, meaning the upper was wider than the lower.
Why it is this way, I have no idea. I have a DPMS Oracle Upper and it fits flush with any AR15 lower.
Anyway, I wouldn't put the DPMS Sportical in the same class as the M&P Sport.
Other than that, the sport is going to get you killed when SHTF, what with it lacking the FA. Allow me to explain...
Zombies have really good hearing. So when you need to load the Sport, and you ease that round in so as to not make noise and you sneak up on a Zombie and go to shoot, only to find it didn't chamber all the way. Now you're making noise fumbling with it, all the while the Zombie hears you, and eats your brains.
I, on the other hand, will be alive onna counta I eased the BCG forward and silently used the FA to complete the chamber.
I hope this story has taught you a valuable lesson....

Interesting view. In answer, I would have to impart that when in Basic Combat Training in the Army, I was taught to have my weapon locked and loaded prior to the start of hostilities. That said, my first round would already be chambered before I ever even saw a zombie. Further, the bolt carrier group is still notched for a FA which allows me to apply forward pressure in the unlikely scenerio where that would be necessary.
I would agree with you, however, that the DPMS I saw at Wal Mart that was similar to the Sport did in fact look like a complete piece of garbage.

I found myself in that situation once... Lucky for me I found an indentation on the bolt perfect for my finger to assist the bolt forward to properly seat the round. Good thing I didn't have a dust cover to swing open and make noise...

From what I've seen on other AR forums, the sport is proving to be a solid AR and getting noticed. Smith as a whole is getting a lot more respect and is no longer just another AR manufacturer. There's even a full thread with many manufacturers that exclude the FA. Bottom line is that the sport is proving to be reliable at an amazing price point. Threads defending the purchase are quickly fading away and becoming a topic of the past.

When I first got my Sport, and I didn't know about this forum, I went to both AR15.nuts and M4gery. I received such a bad response that I really didn't go back. I have tried a couple of times but I just didn't spend enough money to be in their group, It was either TangoFoxtrot or JePes that said in a thread recently wait until you get the blue on blue lecture because your rifle didn't have the correct roll mark on it. I have had that lecture and it left me with a very deep dislike for gunsnobs. I had always been able to just go on when someone would say Oh that gun is alright but this one is better. In my life I have never been in the position to spend a ton of money on the purchase of a rifle. I have bought some and then over a period of time spent money to bring them up another level or two but they didn't start out that way. When I mentioned Sport over there they were absolutely horrible, I didn't take it personally but decided I didn't need to communicate with them. I then actually stumbled upon this forum one day. Before I even posted I read some of the threads and realized this was a group of people willing to help a person through their knowledge or experiences and have never even missed the other 2 forums. I have a tricked up Sport and proudly show pictures, lots of pictures, probably too many pictures. I know I have made people laugh or shake their heads and go what the **** has he done to his rifle now, I am thinking of the pics with the extreme green upper forearm. I like and respect the people in this forum and I am happy to converse with the people here whether they have a Sport or a Noveske there just aren't gunsnobs here and if there are, they hold their comments and I just don't feel the need to go over there. Anyway here is my Tricked out Sport!!!

I would gladly go to the range and match ANY other AR15 shot for shot. That includes the Colts I used in the military. People who equate quality with price are foolish.

One thing about Grover, his Sport is like a chameleon...ever changing, but always cool.
Here's my thumbnail, unfortunately I have no pictures with the new GB and compensator.

Ease forward on the charging handle and then pull out your Zombie Killer Bowie and us it to push the bolt home. No dust cover to make noise.

^^^^^^^I totally agree with Grover, in one of my forums when I made mention of getting the Sport I was told by several to save up the money and get a real quality weapon like a Colt or Daniel Defense. I can't shell that kind of money out on a gun and the accessories they talk about, then I found the long gun section of this forum and start reading great things about the Sport. Grover has given me alot of advice on accessories and low cost ways of having a nice looking quality rifle, when I finally get everything ordered over the next month or 2 and get it tricked out I will be getting pictures posted.

If it wasn't for the production of a "sport" I wouldn't have never thought to own an AR. The people on the forum are great and helpful. If they would serve beer I would be singing " I love this bar". Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2

Probably doesn't qualify as tricked out but I like it. After sighting in the compact scope.

I wonder if DPMS is trying to make the sport look bad by giving a similar looking type of rifle a bad rap.

By taking a larger picture, i.e. megapixel, to begin with Grover. Or possibly just hosting on a sight that doesn't resize the picture.
Did someone actually go to the trouble to swap out their upper receiver for one that has a FA and dust cover on a Sport? Looks like I'm seeing a sport lower and possibly a barrel from a sport, but not a sport upper in splittiebus66's picture.
You all that are going to finger your BCG forward musta forgot that when this occurs, it will be at an inopportune time, such as when you've shot thousands of rounds of steel cased ammo and the chamber is dirty and your fingers just can't get enough pressure to push it forward. And please... Do you really think a guy that came up with a reason for a FA is going to be dumb enough to let the dust cover slam open??? Come get real!!! This is your 21st century reality check dudes! Besides, by the time the Zombies arrive, it's going to be illegal to keep a round in the chamber prior to 2 minutes until you need to use it.
Well splittiebus will still be alive anyway!!! WTH is a splittiebus?

Uh huh, and in that 30 years you encountered how many Zombies??? That's what I thought! Just make sure you have your Ka Bar knife handy!

It's an FN Herstal upper receiver ( govt. contract over run) mated to the wonderful T/C Sport barrel. I got a great deal on it and have a buddy who can swap one in his sleep...so not much work there LOL. The stock receiver is either going to grow new parts or get sold to someone who really wants one. Time will tell.
I also got the heavy F/A carrier stuffed in there from Bravo Company ( thing is a friggin tank) and went with an H buffer after hearing good stuff on here from Grover and some others. The weapon does feel um.... more mellow now and according to that silly clock diagram my ejection pattern is just right to shower the guy next to me at the range. ( he and his sig 522 looked pissed but didnt say anything to me
The forend is the Midwest Industries Gen 2.
Missing is a new stock of some sort ( was looking at Magpul's new SRT but they are in short supply till they spool up production), a Thorntail light mount to get the flashlight out of the way of my hand and I'd like a Larue or other QD mount for the E I E I O tech. All in good time.
I've run the gun hard before and after adding the doodads and it has been flawless. Sport is a winner no matter the configuration.

Oh Btw what is a Splittiebus? Meet a money pit for many years of my life, Aircooled VWs. Note the "split" in the front windscreen I'm out now no time to work on or restore. Here is my last one, I drove her daily for years and had a mild engine fire. Went into storage and then I got married and had a little one Bye bye project...this is just before I sold her earlier this year.
Lol and no I'm not a hippie LMFAO.

ccracer 712 With all your years of experience how many times have you had to use a FA. If you have a jamb most evertime you will end up dumping a mag and yanking the charging handel back to clear it cause you can't push the bolt closed, load a new mag and try again. Or if you are easing the bolt closed while a zombie is sneeking up on you, your hand ain't where it needs to be anyhow if you have to whak the FA closed. Roll that rifle on its side and push the bolt shut with your other thumb. Shame on getting caught and unchambered.
I would not have bought a AR ether if it was not for the M&P sport. When the run of the mill price is as high as some forum members tell you that you have to spend for a "mil-spec" ar and then see that so many 1000 to 1800 dollar rifles shoot like **** why would so many want them. Get ya an ak 47 or 74.
I also did not find this forum till well after buying my sport and like others got flamed on the other forums for asking about a M&P 15 and melonite barrel finsh.
Just I'll be happy with my sub-moa low cost rifle .
Here's mine as dressed up as it my ever get with a used 50 dollars worth of RRA freefloat tube and gas block also a rra mount and a old bunshnell 2.5-10 that was gathering dust.. Maybe a Versa pod and palm rest is in the future

Not an illusion. It's loaded up with Corbon +P's. The sticker peels off easily and is long gone along with the mag disconnect. I also have the Galloway Precision trigger-bar/hammer kit installed and it is a great little shooter. Light, accurate and reliable. I also have an M&P 40FS, a nice old Colt revolver and a few others. The LC9 is my EDC peice.

Jlduke, I undid the screws and installed it. It was quick and easy. took no more than 3 minutes. If you look in the Magwell there are grooves that the lips of the magwell are supposed to fit in. I happen to know a few people in the forum that have them on their rifles. No big trick.

Yup. Just like Grover says. Take out the screws and place the two halves on each side of the magwell. It was a tight fit on mine and the last screw (there are three) took a bit of coaxing to engage the nut in the opposite half.
This is my Sport in its current configuration. I wanted a bit more visual reach so replaced the Nikon M-223 2-8x scope with a far less expensive Simmons 6-21x.

Just curious on the sticker. I bought my LC9 a year ago this month. It's been a fantastic pistol. I think the red sticker for the fire/safe indicator came off around 400 rounds and after the last time out, I noticed the sticker on the left side of the LCI was gone when I was cleaning it.
I have the Galloway trigger and hammer, but after waiting on it to arrive I've come to appreciate the trigger and how smooth it has become.
It used to be my EDC, but now the M&P40c seems to go most often.

I don't post here much.... mainly lurk. The BS runs waaay to deep on most forums to suit my ankle highs. JaPes, OneEyed Open all seem to have a good grasp. The AR15....it's a rifle. It is a simple design created to put lead down range. S&W has taken, neh, removed, the "mystery" of the AR15. The Jedi dinosaurs now know they are, well, ....dinosaurs. So they squeal like gut shot boars. The AR is not rocket science. It's more like a Ruger 10-22. Yeah, I said that.
Jeebus take a breath...would the military want a highly refined, sophisticated, finicky weapon for it's sojurs? Hell, no. The goal is lead, southbound towards the enemy. That's it. Yet the dinosaurs want to argue that [insert name here] has the best AR 15 and if you don't have one of those well, you aint' sh**. EOTEch, dust gaurds, trigger protectors, it HAS to cost big $$........give it a rest. Or...kiss my trigger finger. Last time I checked, if you have a hole in your head, it really doesn't matter if you had a top of the line whozawhatits or a ******* punt gun. Well, Skippy, my LMT custom manufactured, highly technical weapo would have sent a projectile that would have hit the person in the upper left eyelid had I gotten a shot off...unfortunately, I suffered a double tap from an inferior product. Life is so unfair. Last time I checked my game rifles none had no "dust covers".....Praise Jeebus the charging game never knew that. Lest I be having this debate with an animal of lessor intelligence.
I love my S&W 15 SPORT. The dinosaurs are dead and gas is over $4.00 a gallon.....hot air has a price. Bloviate on......
