I just picked up my 15 Sport from the FFL last Friday and have spent some time going over it. Seeing that this is my first AR(haven't held a rifle in 40 yrs-an M14) I will no doubt have questions and from what I've been reading this has been at great forum for good info. The first thing I'm going to do is get rid of that bullet button. The replacement arrived today. I ordered and received 3 pmags over the weekend. My first question has to do with ammo. I've read and watched youtube videos on differences between 5.56 & .223 and from what I garnered, they're almost the same with the 556 having higher pressurethan the 223. What is the the recommended round of choice? i know that the barrel is stamped 556, but I keep reading and hearing that 223 is ok as well.

I've been shooting American Eagle .223, PMC Bronze .223 and just picked up some PMC X-TAC 5.56 (same as XM193). The .223 has shot well. Not had a chance to try the X-TAC yet. Oh and I have about 30 rounds of SS 109 (XM855) Penetrator (green tip).

Thanks for the info! My take on this is that the M&P 15(chambered for 5.56) and take both the 556 & the 223, whereas a 223 chambered barrel can only(safely) accept 223 rounds. Am I correct?
Also, what does the green tip signify?

Keith, The only thing I would say about ammo choice is, if you have to go to a public or private range to shoot, a lot of them won't allow the steel green tip ammo. So if that's your only place to shoot, I wouldn't stock up on a bunch of that. Oh yeah, congrats on the new rifle.

Yes, you are correct. Green tip (also called XM855) is a lead core, topped with a steel penetrator and a copper jacket. Because of that steel penetrator, some ranges don't want their backstops penetrated especially indoors.

Thanks! Since none of the LGS's had any in stock(and didn't know if/when they'd see one) I ended up getting mine through GunBrokers. They seem to be popping up there on a regular basis. I just happened to get a nib Cali version on a buy it now for $635+20s&h+20 FFL. Change out the mag release for $10 for total cost $685 for what are going for $700+s&h=FFL.

Next question: I was able to pull the pin to open the upper from the lower, but the other pin(so I can remove the upper from the lower) doesn't want to budge much. Any thoughts on how I can get this to move? I realize it's not suppose to come out completely, but the most I've been able move it is about a 1/16".
