New Sport Owner
I'd been looking at acquiring an AR-15 weapon for a while and happened to hear about the M&P Sport. I had heard really good things about it and also the lack of availability from the internet and at my local sporting goods store. Anyway, while the wife and I were killing some time last week before going to a movie, I started browsing their selection and low and behold, there it was. Mind you, the counter guys had told me they only receive a Sport maybe once or twice a month and as soon as its on the shelf, its gone. They also don't allow you to order one, which seems a bad business practice, but whatever. Anyway, talked with the wife, filled out the paperwork and 15 minutes later, we walked out with it.
I've put about 200 rounds through it in 2 visits to the indoor range and it has performed great. My wife, who is not a gun person, even shot 5 rounds today and she was surprised at its lack of recoil. At the range today, I had her shoot my Marlin 60 and she did great with it, after some coaching. (Love that rifle!)
The Sport kind of scared her, but I just wanted her to see how it shot and see what she needs to do to get better with it. Mission accomplished and while she isn't totally hooked on shooting the Sport yet, I think that with more trigger time, she love it also.
Looking forward to reading other peoples thoughts and so on about the Sport.

Congratulations and welcome aboard!
It's exciting to greet so many new M&P 15 owners lately. Because I'm biased, it's a bit more exciting to welcome a new 15-Sport owner.

Welcome aboard....My Marlin model 60 got my wife hooked and then a sport set a hook in her mouth that she wont spit out. LOL I am just finishing building one for her left over from the Sport pieces that I modified. I did have to buy a barrel and a lower and a bolt carrier group but she now has her own. I understand and she loves the lack of recoil also.

I walked in to to my LGS looking for a Colt (they don't carry them); handled a Noveske N4, which was on sale for $1250; but walked out with my paperwork for a Sport...okay, not as dramatic as walking out with the Sport itself, but I'm stuck in CA. haha.
No wife accompanying me to the range anymore...she prefers to go shopping with our daughter.

Mine has basically supported me in all the fun I have had and listens when I talk about some of the cool stories that I get from here...so now when we are somewhere and something catches her eye, I buy it, she asks for so little and ya'll know how over the top I have been with my rifles so I will keep this one and try to keep her happy....I bought some targets the other day, the human torso w/head sized orange peel targets. She walked into the room as I was unpacking them and she looked at them and said" I've been wanting some of those" How cool is that!!!!

I just got one at my LGS and I really like the quality. My friend. Does owner says it's a glorified 22lr rifle. No 2 forward assist and no dust cover. I'm kind of worried I bought a lower end rifle. Someone tell me if those features are a must. Help!

Your "friend" is either lying or ignorant. Maybe both.

You do not really need forward assist or a dust cover...period.
And the M&P 15 Sport is relatively inexpensive but it is not a low end rifle. Most Sports will out shoot almost all of the commercial AR rifles.
Enjoy your rifle and stay safe.

I joined the Army less than 1 week after my 18th birthday in the early 1970's. I never had to use the forward assist and after the 1st round was fired the dust cover was never closed until reaching camp or barracks. I have NEVER seen a dust cover on a Benelli shotgun or any other shotgun. How much does your Friend really know about AR's? I don't think putting lipstick on a pig makes the bacon taste better

Yup. They do. That's how a 3 year old thread comes back from the dead.

Beatles, I noticed you're a Glock 22 owner. Saw a Gen 2 today....how do you like it? Was wondering if I should pick one up?

Both of my Glocks, a G22 and a G23, are gen 3's, and I have never had a gen 2 of any model in my hand, so keep that in mind.
With that said, I love my G22, and my wife is the same way about the G23 she carries. I carry the G22 all the time, everywhere. At first I was a little apprehensive about the size and weight, but I got an IWB Galco KingTuck hybrid holster and after about 2-3 days it just became a part of my clothing. I don't notice it any more than I notice my underwear, socks, or belt.
It is as accurate as any pistol I have ever shot, its super simple to strip and clean (as are all Glocks) and if you want to dress it up Glocks are a lot like the AR platform...there are lots of accessories for it.
I've only made 2 changes to mine...a Ghost Ranger trigger...smooth as silk and 4.5 lbs trigger weight, and a set of Ameriglo TCAP tritium sights.
In a nutshell...I love it.

Buy a Glock 22? YES! Buy the Gen2 (a.k.a. the first time a Glock was chambered for .40 S&W)? Only if you accept the following bit of information. Glock 22 Gen2's are known to not have enough chamber support at the feed ramp, a.k.a. not fully supported. In some instances this can induce case failure the already peppy .40 S&W cartridge. To this day, Glock pistols chambered for .40 S&W have a stained reputation. This issue was corrected in later production models.
Buy a used Glock 22? If it looks good, go for it. If you need to refurbish it, no problem. Parts are inexpensive and plentiful. Glocks are the easiest pistol to work on.
I own this one, a Gen4:
It's being worked on.
Now back to M&P 15 goodness...

As a fellow Commiefornian, I feel your pain. I have, however, heard that the 10 day waiting (cool off) period may be going away soon.
You'll love your Sport!

I was in basic training and we were issued the first M16s at Fort Jackson. After about 47 years, I finally purchased the Sport II and am looking forward to some range time.
It was like going back in time to take it apart for its first cleaning, but strangely enough, it all came back to me.
Thanks for letting me be a part of the SW family.

Congratulations on the purchase of the new S&W M&P 15 Sport and to introducing your wife to shooting it so maybe their will be another Sport in the gun safe that is hers.
