I have paid off and will soon be the owner of a brand new OR! Unfortunately (like my M&P9) I've been put on background check hold. It will probably take a couple of days for them to sort it out before I can go pick it up.

I have roughly $300 worth of credit on amazon and am considering a couple of options.

A) put it towards a Eotech or Aimpoint Red dot
B) put it towards some quality Iron Sites (Troy) and maybe some other random Magpul accessories.

Any thoughts? Thanks for everybodys help in making my decision. I'm glad to have finally made the purchase

My opinion is quality optics, but I am a strong believer in optics. A lot of it depends on what you are going to be doing with the rifle and the distances you will be shooting. Glad you got it though, my nephew has an OR and it is a great rifle. he went with an ACOG. Way out of my price range but super nice.

Congrats on the purchase! As Oneye said, you need a plan for how you're going to use it first and then build from there.

Mostly target shooting at a current max of 25 yards (indoor range). Hopefully will get it out in the open for longer distances.

I think you will want irons on it, even if you end up with an optic. Troys are nice (I prefer their fixed sights).

I went all magpul MOE on my sport, then switched back to the a2 grip and standard handguard. I kept my MOE stock on the rifle as it is leagues better than the standard m4 stock IMO. Swapped my magpul MBUS for a Troy rear fixed (super happy with the quality) and a great value compared to LaRue fixed rear sight. The LaRue is pretty though! I also threw a XS 24/7 front sight post ($52) on my FSB

Troy fixed sight should be roughly $100 (front and rear), magpul MOE stock $55 (CTR-$75). Flip ups will be double that price! I use the MOE and it doesn't wiggle a whole lot at all (very pleased) not sure how it stacks up to the CTR but have read post saying that they move just as much as the MOE...? I wish I was as happy with the magpul hanguard but the heat shield started coming loose after one range trip of 300 rounds. Have no problems with the MOE grip, but also no problems with the A2 grip. I threw a magpul K grip on and took it off before I even shot with it (liked the angle and how thin it was, it was just too slippery).

It's all you're preference though. Definitely go with a quality optic but keep in mind that even the best battle tested optics can fail!

Let's face it. Red dot sight is an itch we all eventually have to scratch. Get the red dot, but I would recommend a lesser priced option, somewhere in the $150 range. Check one out locally if you can to be certain you can use one without issues.

But I agree with oneyeopn - you need magnified glass for any distance shooting. I had a red dot on my OR but it has been replaced with a Bushnell 5-15X scope.

Quality optics or BUIS will serve you well. I'd go with the Aimpoint before the Eotech.

The OR is 'optics ready', so I think it's required that you put an optic on it Maybe S&W should market an IR for those that prefer irons over optics

Way to go.

If your AR is like the vast majority, it will be very accurate. So, you might want a scope so you can enjoy whacking small targets at longer ranges, and a red dot so you can take carbine classes and practice CQB drills.

Also you might want to get into 3-gun/multigun competition. Lot's of games out there for AR owners.

Anyway, you did good. Now enjoy trying to wear that barrel out.

Quick update. I've been following the prices of a few optics on-line and the Eotech 512 just went on sale today on Amazon for $365 so I jumped on it! It only cost me $60 bucks out of pocket due to my Amazon credit so I'll take it

Love my EoTech... I also have the 512

Inside 100yds it is Dead On...... anything Longer.... I have a 2x7 for that, and can swap em with minimal loss of accuracy to either one...

Fun thing with the EoTech is that it is NOT a scope... so when ya pop off 6rds at 50yds... always Fun when ya walk up to the Target and see how good ya did...

Or a Full pop Can EXPLODE at 75yds 1st shot.....

I have the Sport... and Love the flip up rear site and is 100% Co-Witnessed..... So i would also suggest getting Irons for when ya wanna add some spice to yer shooting... or like me yesterday, yer BATTERIES die.......LOL

Thanks Stav! I do plan on getting some fold down Troy sites at some point. I've been researching this for the better part of 6 months before I could actually make the purchase I have a lot of plans for my first AR!

Yep, EoTech is fine sight system, good choice.

Now that you have the EOTech you can start looking for iron sights.

The Troys are well made, from what I have seen the Cadillac among that type of sight. Unfortunately, the folks who design them are apparently more mechanics and machinists than they are shooters. The blade for the aperature in folding battlesight model presents a flat surface which is terrible for glare. Normally an aperature sight is either protected from glare with a hood or at least it is dished to reduce glare (usually pretty effective). Much as I like the Troy sight mechanically, I sure wish they would do something about the glare issue. Might consider that before you buy. If it bothers you, there are other alternatives - but I have yet to see one quite as tidy and well-made as the Troy.
