Default Bulk ammo for my new M&P-15 Standard 5.56NATO

I swore I'd never by an AR platform rifle after I left the army in 1990. (Holy cow that was a long time ago. I should never have typed that.) I didn't dislike my M-16. I just never wanted to see one again.

Anyway. I just ordered the 811000 model and I expect delivery by the middle of next week.

I'm thinking of ordering some bulk brass Federal or American Eagle 55 grain ammo.

Is there any scuttlebutt running around that maybe this stuff isn't reliable?

Thanks much.

I regulary shoot Federal (Lake City) XM-193 55 grn Ball through my M&P15 and find it to be accurate, dependable ammunition. THis stuff is available thru many online outlets and auction sites.

Recently swore that I would never buy American Eagle 55 gr again. Had a very poor shooting experience with that ammo through both M&P15 ORC and Mini 14. It was inexpensive, but I think you can do much better.

Should add that this was in the 100 round boxes from Gander.

Said the same thing back in 73 when I got out.Only I HATED the M-16. M&P caught my attention with the out of the case tack driving hand guns and hooked me. Love em. I kept reading about all the great M&P AR's on here and some other places and desided to give it a go. Hook line and sinker. I have 3 AR's (WARNING they are adictive). 2 are M&P's and I'm looking at 2 more.

Had good luck with American Eagle 55 grain and no problems. Might try a few different brands to see what your's likes best. Some like different ammo, some can be picky.

I bought a case 1000rds of Federal XM193 5.56x45, liked it so much that half of it is still sitting in the unopened box in my ammo storage. Saving it for an acronym situation and I bought some freedom ammo, inexpensive plinking stuff. Now I have over 1000rnds I am reloading and shooting and still saving the XM193 because it is good dependable ammo and should the situation come up where I need a bunch at one time I have it. Plus the brass from the first half case is good reloadable brass also. I have shot a little of the American Eagle, it was ok but nothing to write home about. Also like you after I got out, more than 10 years before you that I wouldnt have an AR, but I absolutely hated the Mattel Toy, I humped an M60 most of the time, except for when doing guard duty in Panama!

I had to laugh reading this....I got out of the army in 68. I trained on the M-14 and as I was sent to vietnam, I was handed an M-16...had never fired it or qualified with it or disassembled it. Got to nam and mounted two M-60's on my oh-23 (I was the mechanic) Piolet fired them once and told me to remove them as they shook the AC pretty bad....so now I had two M-60's and never did use the M-16. The M-16 has a bad reputation for jamming and cost men their lives so I swore I would never own one....now I have one and am looking at an AR-10. My buddies son has 4-5 or them and ordered a DPMS .338 so I guess I have the addiction now LOL.

I like shooting this ammo! I've gone through 500 round with no problem at all! That isn't a whole lot, but enough for me to buy more when I see it around!

I'd say 1/4 of my Brass is from the American Eagle rounds...

Fine and Dandy Rounds.... Like Grover nothing to bet the farm on.... But good Zombie Killers close range......

For plinking... Get whats CHEAP....... Brass preferably....... But For hunting, if ya dont reload, try a few better loads out.... heck thats half the fun....... trying new stuff and seeing what it/you can do

Anyways.... have fun......

Definitely feeling a bit defensive over my post that I’d never buy American Eagle again vs all the other positive responses. Maybe it was the shooter, maybe it was just a bad box of ammo.

Attached is a target from the day I shot the American Eagle and 3 other brands. (Disclaimer; I am not much of a shooter.) You can see that the Fiocchi and Minutemen shot close to 2” at 100yds, a little high and right, but I was shooting for grouping. The PMC started with a 1/2” 3-shot group at 50yds, but the next 7 separated a little at 100.

I shot 5 each American Eagle at the 2 lower targets, and if you look close will only see 8 holes – 2 were not on paper and no grouping pattern at all. My Mini 14 never made paper, all 10 shots, with the American Eagle.

I do have a 2nd box and will try that next range trip.

I've never had any issues with AE 55gr... That said, I typically shoot PMC Bronze.

I wanted to follow up my previous post on the poor accuracy of American Eagle 55gr FMJ. So yesterday I took my OR, some Fiocchi, Hornady, Black Hills, and the original plus one new box of AE to the range. All groups were 10 at 100yds.

Hornady 40gr v-max shot the best, a sub 2.5" nice group with 5 of 10 touching in the bullseye!
Black Hills 68gr match grouped as well, but the group moved almost 2" to the left.
The Fiocchi shot the way I expected, a 2.5" group. I've now shot several weights of Fiocchi, and it has become a very dependable ammo for me.
The AE, from both boxes, shot sub 5" groups (better than last time out at least) but very low and a bit left.

My resulting conclusion - if shooting for accuracy, leave the AE at home, and my original statement that I'll never buy it again still stands.

One plus for the AE - if you want to impress your friends, shoot the AE, it puts out a tremendous muzzle flash!

55 gr FMJ the last time out. In the past, 50 gr v-max, a 62 gr SP (as I recall, I'm on the road today), and a 55 gr SP. I've shot several brands recently with plans to shoot others, looking for that perfect round for me and my OR.
