Can I use this rail on my Sport?
I have no idea if this is even an option for my Sport. A friend built his AR of various components and had this Daniel Defense rail with bipod mount that I really liked.
Not sure about the free floating barrel business or if it's an option for me. Thanks for any advice.

Dawgfan if you look at my thread about a thanksgiving gift you will see that exact rail on my new Sport. And I really like it. You will either have to replace your gas block or you can cut off the front sight with a dremel cutoff wheel right above the gas port and use it. It will require changing out the barrel nut but if you can get a good deal on it. Jump fast and Jump Hard.

Thanks. That's what I get for not cruising the threads before posting I guess. Probably not willing to cut anything and will have to research replacing the gas block.
Great looking Sport Grover!

In this situation, it will be easier and better for you to cut down your front sight. It's a pinned sight and if you replace it with a gas block, that gas block will either have set screws or a clamp. You can't beat a pinned gas block. It's pretty common practice. Also, getting the front sight block off will likely be more difficult than cutting it down.

Remove front sight post = driving out roll pins. On the S&W, the roll pins are tapered and drive out opposite from normal. I can't remember... left to right? Then drive out the pin that retains the gas tube. Grover should be able to clarify, he does it all the time.
The only reason you'd want to cut down your front sight is if and only if you never intend to reuse your A2 F front sight post.
But that's just me...

You can do most if not all of the rail options available to the AR-15.
After 1+ year with my M&P sport, I'm jumping the shark and picked up a new upper reciever with dust cover and FA and will install a low pro gas block and free float rail.
Ill probably use the original sport upper to build a 6.8 SPC upper in 20"

Gotta love the AR-15 platform. It's the equivalent of Legos for grown men.

front sight pins drive out from the right side to the left. I think I posted measurements and pics in another thread, I will look after chores.

It's all do-able, but ask your buddy with the DD rail if he can give you support, advice, and some tools that you will need for the rail install. See if he has an upper receiver clamp, armorer's tool or barrel nut wrench, a pin punch set. You'll need these and other common hand tools to remove the front sight and barrel nut. DD has a proprietary barrel nut that must be installed. Ask your buddy if he has the DD barrel nut wrench or you'll need to buy that, and of course you'll have to buy a low profile gas block. Get a clamp style, it'll be much easier to install. Also, you can't just cut down the front sight post because you must get the DD barrel nut past that and also the gas tube must be inserted through the nut into the upper, something your friend didn't have to do be concerned about on a new build. Do you have a muzzle device? That must be removed and reinstalled also.
I don't mean to scare you away from this project, these are installed all the time, just be aware of the total project. Also, DD rails are some of the more expensive. There are other less expensive options that use the existing barrel nut, and options to install a 2 piece FF rail without removing the existing front sight.
Good luck and enjoy!

Yep. If you're open to a different rail, there are some (Troy, Samson...) that use the existing barrel nut. Makes it a bit easier to do. If you go that route, cut the sight, slide the rail on, tighten it up, grin from ear to ear.

OK Gents, not sure I want to go to that much trouble. It looks great, but may be more than I'm willing to undertake.
Now to the bottom line. I'd like to add the Magpul angled fore grip and a bipod mount.
What might be the best quick change from the stock fore end to accommodate these? Only really need a picatinny rail on the bottom as I do not intend to add flashlights or other accessories to the sides or top at this point.

the quickest and easiest is to add a rail section to the bottom of your handguard, or a sling stud to your handgrip. I think I have a sling stud that would fasten to your handgrip and I am not positive how the magpul grip fastens. but a rail section is inexpensive and easy to do.

You can do a search for "2 piece drop in handguard" or "2 piece free float handguard", or take a look at the Midwest Industries site. Midwest Industries: Tactical Handguards. The drop in handguard will give you rails without any tool work, the free float will require cutting the d-ring and spring with a Dremel but the front sight/gas block remains untouched. You can find a few videos on this process.
