Gas block barrel and front sight aliment?
Hi..
I have a small quad gas block with a pop up YHM front sight on my AR got the AR used and it looked ot be a tad off center to me.. Is there a way to get the gas block and sight straight with the barrel and bore at the bench.. Straight lines? laser levels? I have not took it to the range yet. There i suppose I could loosen the gas block bolts and move the works side to side after setting the rear sight to 0 wind-edge. but thought you guys would know better.. Right now it's eyeballed to center of top of barrel and bore as best as i could.. Is there a better way? Thanks George

if it is misaligned it may not shoot properly, the gas port on the barrel is pretty particular. I never thought about it, but it you can put the gun in a rifle vise and use a little level to make sure the rail on the upper receiver is flat and level you may be able to use a large square or good metal level with a straight edge to check it. possible even one of those picture hanging lasers. good luck.

A cheap cartridge laser boresighter would tell you if the front sight is aligned or way out.

Rubber band streched from the center of the rear sight to the center of the front sight.
Look at it from directly over head, if it's canted you'll see it right away.

Loosen the gas block bolts, turn it upside down and place it on something that's dead flat like a counter top. Insure both the gas block and rail on the receiver are flat of the surface, retighten the bolts.

Update! Ok I didn't have a bore sight on hand.. Going to get one. The shops here where I live are out of them, like everything else.. My gas block is the short quad short one with the two hey bolts " shorter then my receivers flat top.. I also have the stock round hand guards on it. They protrude over the front gas block. So I had to use the rubber band method.. Got the finest rubber band I could get, installed my carry handle and used the front of it as a guide.. Looped it on the rear sight after centering it then on the front sight.. Looking from over head I could not tell much but looking from behind the gun I could see that the front sight was off.. I used the front most part of the carry handle sides as the rubber band fit right inside it. Got the front gas block and sight centered then tightened down the bolts.. I went back and forth on the bolts 1/4 turn at a time till they both felt good and snug. I tend to over do so I was careful.. It does look much better now by eye.. I have not shot this gun yet before or after the adjustment.. I have a laser level going to dig that out. I should be able to get it to hit on the rear, front and front of bore at the same time.. If so It's got to be close.. Thanks so much for your help.. Great advice! George
