Default Pmag: Gen M2 or Gen M3?

I know that the PMAG Gen M3s are out and are well thought of. That said, if one wanted to stock up on PMAGs, is there any good reason not to get the M2s? They are readily available and more affordable. I'm not suggesting that the M3 is not an improvement, only asking if there is something wrong with the M2 that would make them no good to stock up on.

Thanks!

Nope! The Gen 2 will serve you just find. Basically the gen 3 mags do the same thing the gen 2's do...holds the rounds and lets the BCG take one or more rounds when needed...its just a marketing gimick to me.

As stated, If you are cycling less than 1K rounds a week,, your GTG with G1, G2, or G3.

If your looking for investment(s) for the future, GI issue mags might have a better return..

If you're thinking survivalist,, ammo is more important than mags..

YMMV..

Thanks guys! Just the kind of info I was looking for.

JJ_BPK (or anyone, really): Why do you consider the GI mags to be better investments? Because of their low cost now? Because of the material? Just curious.

Thanks!

I consider GI mags better for the long term because of the poly composites over time are effected by UV rays, we may be talking a long time but most o the composites are.

Gotcha. That makes sense. Also the lower cost ain't bad either. I am guessing it would be wise to get what PMAGS I can and then fill out the stores with some GIs.

Cost. USGI mags- the aluminum units are pretty good...... once you add MAGPUL parts to them. In reality, they work okay, and I have some. But the Pmags are just plain BETTER. I will give you a couple simple tests: Take a mag, and turn it on its' side, and lay it on the ground. Now, give it one good stomp. Not like you are trying to flatten it forevermore, but like if you were moving around real quickly, and dropped an empty and then accidentally stepped on it. Better than 60% of USGI mags will be dented in, and will not work properly. If you want to be fair about it, jump up and down on the Pmag like a chimpanzee going nuts at the zoo. The Pmag will win every time.
You can intentionally drop them, loaded or unloaded, on the feed side. The one positive is the USGI mag can be bent back. The other positive side is the Magpul bounces back all by itself, and you don't need to rework it. And, the feed lips on the Magpul will stay correct, whereas after you maim any metallic mag's feed lips, you will be tuning them.

USGI mags are good. Pmags are far superior to them.

So, when it comes to the PMAGS is the consensus that G2 is just as good as G3 if they will only be used in an AR-15 and have a limited number of rounds put through them?

I just bought some G2s....I specifically wanted them. For me, G3s offer nothing I want.

Why won't a Pmag dust cover on a 20 round mag clip onto the bottom of the 20 round mag like I've seen on 30 round mags? Does it have anything to do with different generations?

All the ones I have do. But I was wondering if ALL PMags will accept the "GI" stripper clips and the "feeder" ? All of my mags have the slots, feeder is a tight fit.

I can't get the dust cover to clip onto the bottom of any of my mags, without a piece of plastic breaking and flying across the room. I've never tried the feeder on them.

I cannot see that you would be ill served by the previous generation of PMag. After all, if their own advertising is to be believed, that previous generation was the best magazine in the world. So, even if it is now second best, it is still better than everything else out there, right?

They should be good for a couple hundred thousand rounds or so..........

I see some competitive shooters just burn ammo practicing and their mags take a ton of loadouts. My own mags are well used, between multiple rifles and shoots, they are in the dozens of cycles and are pretty much brand new.

I second that or whichever you can get sometimes they are in short supply.

Thanks. I can get all but the last round in with the spoon (???) on the PMags, steel mags I get them all in. I figure they are better than nothing in a pinch and keep them in my bandoliers in the ammo box as a back up for S and get. I do prefer the Lula for just loading normal. "Almost" the best invention out for loading.

Unless you own one of the non-AR platforms for which the Gen 3 was modified for better compatibility, the Gen 2 (now MOE) is fine.

For probably 98% or more Pmag users, the Gen 3 offers no real advantage that I can see.

ETA: Shinny, the dust cover will not snap on the bottom of the new 30-round Gen 3 Pmags, or any of the 20-round Pmags.
