Default 7.62x39 Uppers

So I went to my LGS, and they were running a sale on Wolf WPA in .223 for 5.49 a box. Problem is that the shelves were totally cleaned out.

HOWEVER.

Underneath the Wolf .223, they had about 250bxs of Wolf 7.62x39 on sale for the same price.

My question is, since 5.56/.223 is about as hard to find as a Democrat & Republican that get along, are there any decent/affordable 7.62x39 Uppers out there?

I have a colt upper listed in the classifieds. Willing to trade if you would prefer to do that over cash . Good luck with your search

The problem has always been finding magazines that work.

THIS.
The taper on the brass is different; the 762 has a steeper taper, and as such the AK magazine has a larger arc to compensate for the shape and feed correctly. The narrower taper on the 223 leaves the magazine much straighter, and when the 762 is loaded, the feed ramp drives the ammo at an angle which promotes binding in the magazine.

Stick to the 223, or a derivative which keeps the same taper for the brass.

My issue with 7.62x39 has been as a round it doesnt compare favorably with anything that I presently own. My little brother has an SKS and his sons have taken it deer hunting many times. I dont know about where you are but here anything under 175yrds is a close shot. It wasnt until I went to the LeveRevolution bullets that I could become successful with my 30-30. I have read claims that compare the two rounds and also throw the 300whisper into the mix but you really cannot compare them in anyway with 100+yrd shots. The cases are just to limited on powder compared to the 30-30. Instead of getting another upper get the Modern Sporting Rifle of the 1890's, a lever action and if you want rails get the Mossberg 464 FTX...

I to live in NE Ohio and have no problem finding .223 or 5.56 ammo. Some of it I buy online, some local. But I have around 6,000 rounds in my collection. This ammo is not hard to find these days, your just looking in the wrong places. It can be had for .42-.46 a round all day long for practice ammo.

There are plenty of AKs and AK variants that are cheaper and many that cost well over $1000.00

Depends on what rifles you are talking about.

Not all AKs are the same... just like AR15s

Century built WASR-10s were $600ish at the gun show last weekend. Saw an Arsenal with a tag of $2500.

For $600ish I'll buy a M&P Sport.

The post is about putting a 7.62x39mm upper on an AR15.

It is cheaper just to get an entire AK rather than put an upper on a AK.

I don't think the poster is interested in buying another AR.

The point was to have a cheaper alternative to AR ammo.

PG Wootown -

Have you tried GunBot There is ammo out there from 39 cents to 42 cents per round. Just keep an eye on gunbot and new deals pop up all the time. Also Gunbroker has plenty of ammo online

Default 7.62X39 Uppers

If I was looking for an upper (ready to go) today I would be looking at the Armalite or possibly the Bushmaster.I have one I assembled in the first Obama scare using a Del-ton upper,Rock River lower, LMT bolt. Just looked on the D/T site and don`t see 7.62X39 uppers there anymore. The most important feature for the Russian caliber is M4 receiver and ramps and secondarily the mags. Mine became "M4" after the initial D/T upper (non M4) began having problems with nose-diving rounds into the chamber face.I contacted D/T and told them I wanted to upgrade to the M4 receiver and M4 barrel ramps. This was in the initial warranty period(90 days?) and they ate the labor and I paid the up charge to the M4 receiver and they smoothed out the barrel ramps to meld with the receiver. I of course owned a spare upper receiver at that point but due to parts shortages then too I sold that receiver and the whole deal only cost me about $50. Was using C-Products mags( bought 4-30 rounders) and had a problem with 2 of them if I recall but called C-Products(Chad?) and they swapped the mags and everything could not be better since. C-Products went through a change in ownership but they still have those mags on their site and I have since added a couple of 10 rounders...if you want to shoot off the bench the 30 rounders have that AK curve and don`t cut it. I also bought a 5/64ths bit and smoothed out the barrel gas port as some import ammo(at that time) was weak. I reload on a Dillon 550 using AA1680 powder and I have cases I`ve loaded 10 times that are still good. They look bad(even after tumbling) but still fire and cycle with no problems. The Armalite upper comes with no sights and the Bushmaster does have A2 sights and if you have a dealer that deals with either of those manufacturers I think you can do much better than Manu. suggested retail. Just my opinion. Good Luck, John

kb18no1, since PG Wootown posted this inquiry last year, and hasn't posted since May of this year, I doubt he is going to see your advice!
