M&P 15 Owners, a few questions
Hi guys.
So I'm currently looking at ARs and these impress me as for as best/most bang for the buck. Granted I have a Mini-14, and have a SIG 556. But the parts availbility for the AR trumps them both!
So here's my questions: I have the chance to get an older M&P 15 (no A, B, OR, T) just a plain one with the A3 upper.
So are there ANY problems with these rifles? And no I'm not interested in the bloody "list"!
Just want an AR that I can rely on without spending a fortune or buying a damn pony! Thanks Dale

I have the sport and have placed about 5-7k rounds thru her and so far I haven't had a single problem. Which is why I bought the 15-22 ( 8-10 k rounds thru her )version and only have a minor inconvenience with her ( barrel nut needs retightened after 4-5 k rounds) and after having both w/o any real problems I am getting the S & W 300 blk. S & W makes a great weapon.

You can always watch the gun auction websites, or we have a person in the forum C4IGrant who sells S&W M&P15's and he might be able to set you up if you PM him.
Welcome to the forum, I have a couple of the Sports, very accurate and wouldnt trade for them, also not a fan of the dancing pony!!

The standard model you are talking about is likely to have a chrome barrel with a 1:9 twist rate. Nothing wrong with that unless you plan on shooting heavier grain ammo. Even then, you may be fine. All of the S&Ws came with that barrel except the Sport which was the first to have the 1:8 melonite treated 5r barrel. It was questioned when it first came out but has really proven to be an awesome barrel. Newer Smiths are now getting that barrel too.
I have an OR which is basically the same as what you are looking with except it had a gas block instead of a front sight block. Now that I've been in this a while, I wish I would have got the one with a front sight block as it would have saved me a lot of money up front.
So, basically, you can't go wrong. Smiths have been strong rifles since they took them in house. If it's one that was made before they took them in house, then it was mostly outsourced and stamped with S&W info. Not sure how reliable those were as they were before my time. Someone else may be able to chime in. Just make sure you take a good look at the BCG, barrel for ware and other typical worn areas. Just like you would any used firearm. Good luck!

I have the MOE version which they stopped carrying. It has the 1in 9 twist chrome barrel. So far I have had no problems or issues with it. I have only shot 55grain ammo through it so far though so not sure how the higher grain bullets will stabilize in it.

Does it still have the original box it came in ? That would (should) have a "born" date on it and would help some. I too have an early Mini and don't care for the "pony" what so ever. You get your $$$ worth with S&W AR's and I wouldn't trade mine either.

My wife has an early M&P15 and I have an early M&P15A. Both have 1:9 twist chrome lined barrels. They are plenty rugged and accurate enough for anything that platform would be used for. Several thousand rounds have gone down both barrels.
I have never shot heavy bullets in either of them, but 1:9 will stabilize 69gr bullets without an issue and should stabilize 77 grain. I don't worry about it because we don't shoot long range target competition anyway.
Her rifle was made out of house and mine is an early in-house build. In mine, the upper forging had ripples, so it was sent back in for cosmetic reasons. Her's has a tight mag well and we have to sort mag's carefully.
I'd buy another one used if in decent condition in a heart beat.
