Post Heat Shields

I'm adding a picatinny rail on my M&P AR-15 for a forgrip/bi-pod..my question is ....does the heat shield need to be removed from the handguard in order to mount rail?? Or can you mount thru shield?
thanks

the heat shield will just pop out and then you can pop it back in. depending upon what type of rail you got it can go either way. I find it is easier to gently pry it out so I can get my washers and everything centered.

Default Heat Shields

I used a Magpul 9 slot rail, I think it's the L4 rail. The screws were too short to go through the hand guard and heat shield. I also was having trouble removing the heat shield so I just cut some out with my drimel tool.

VERY interesting. I found it odd the handguard on my Sport didn't have a heat shield when I changed it over to a quad rail last week. I had been wondering if I could convert it (heat shield) over too. After looking, there is no way I could have converted the heat shield anyway.

Maddmax pointed something out to me, My sport didnt come with a heat shield, but I have worked on some other rifles that did. I just dont remember which right now. Plus the ABArms handguard did also.
