Default My Build So Far

People seemed to find it offensive/useless, so let's just end it then

So you've got about $4500 stuck into a S&W M&POR?

I've got to admit I'm kind of skeptical. I'd love to see a picture.

Did you even shoot the stock rifle? I get a kick out of people who buy their first AR15 and think they need to instantly upgrade all the parts and buy an optic.

Wow you have almost a complete rifle in your parts bin. I too would like to know how much you have shot the rifle? It looks like the only thing missing is the Ni-Bo coated BCG, Magpul B.A.D. lever, ambi safety and ambi Mag release. Cant wait to see the pics!!

very cool....I would recommend a BAD lever, you will find it is really handy at the firing line or hunting. I find it really nice to be able to operate the bolt lock with the trigger finger instead of having to move my left hand back. My wife is a lefty and she finds it also easier to be able to release the bolt with her trigger finger also.

Tom it is a lever that attaches to the bolt release that allows you to operate it with your trigger finger. Cedaredge, I like that little town...been there many times. Lived 12 years in Redstone.

And ohbejuan, I may tease you a bit but my MSR's are also highly modified. My pocket is just not as deep as yours but if it was I would probably be the same way.

This one is pretty mild compared to what they have been.

What Mall....there isnt any malls around me. But our poultry and pygmy goats are safe. The coyotes and prairie dogs I hunt aren't.

The mall comment was meant for the OP, as in he is a extreme version of a mall ninja.

You spent $25 on crayons to fill in the stamping?

The ACOG is a combat optic. What purpose does it serve for you that makes it worth the price?

I'm not knocking you, I'm being sincere. Do you compete or do you just like the looks of all that stuff?

To each his own and if your gun makes you happy then rock on.

I'm not new to guns but I am to AR's. You say this is info for newcomers and we know you are just joking? But I wonder how many newbies you have scared away with those prices? We are trying to win converts here you know.

I'm waiting to see the pictures. Close-ups showing all this stuff.

I'm not like the OP, I like a good optic that doesn't break the bank, and accessories that are useful like a sling, or a bipod for long shots in the field. A good case to carry the gun, and a couple good ammo boxes. I'm more minimalistic.

Designer flash suppressors? Not my style. But if it gets more sales and more people involved I'm all for it!

When I first started playing with my Sport, I actually had a few "custom" made muzzle brake/flash suppressors made. over a 3 month period I experimented with them and factory made ones. I discovered that each one changed my point of impact differently with some of them not even consistently changing it. I still have a drawer full and ended up using a thread protector for the most consistent accurate shooting plus it reduced my sound signature tremendously. If anyone wants to try it they will find the same thing. I have never used minute of bad guy as my guide. Minute of prairie dog is what I go by. I have associates that have tried it and discovered the same thing so it is food for thought.

I own a 2007 GYTR Yamaha Raptor 700 (ATV). Purchased new in 2007 for close enough to $10k. I rode it stock for a while, and then customized everything from the roota to the toota! Quad now has over $19,000 in it. I know it was silly to put so much into a quad, but it was my main hobby at the time. I don't race professionally on it, but it didn't stop me from adding an additional 30hp to it with no bore or stroke. I don't care what kind of big block you have, nothing beats this thing in the eighth mile, and could give most trouble in the full quarter.

I could go on for days about it, but my point is, I did it the way I wanted it. I always planned from day one of riding it, to keep it forever. Not interested in selling, as I know I will never get my cash back out of it. But it's a priceless feeling to be on your way to one of the biggest riding parks in the south east, and actually have traffic slowing down to take picture of your finished quad on the trailer. Actually arriving to the park, and turning the heads of close to 2,000 people is the icing on the cake... Kudos to you Ohbejuan! I am just as passionate and particular concerning my hobbies as well. Now get some pics up!!!

So, what is the purpose of this firearm? What is it being "built" to do?

A little off the hook, eh?
I gravitate more towards lightweight, indestructable, practical(read:cheap) performance modifications. Sorta like the 'less is more', 'slow dowm & go faster' scheme.
Jes' sayin'.

It's your gun and your money...I just find it interesting that a person "new to the rifle world" would buy a lower priced rifle, such as the OR, and then put all top of the line accessories on it. How did you pick these particular accessories? I think the OR is a good rifle, but if I was going to spend that kind of money, it wouldn't have been spent on an OR and accessories.

So, after doing this build, what did you learn? What parts were absolute must haves and how did they affect your shooting? What would you do differently if you were doing it over? And what did you find that you didn't need at all? (Hint...BCM SOPMOD extractor kit)

Did you have a seekins muzzle brake on there before, where you now have a battlecomp? If you have gone this far on the rifle but you have the CTR buttstock. I would have gone with an Ace, Sopmod or UBR. I am kinda a cheap old guy and I have the CTR. But if I had the money I would have gone with a nicer buttstock. My Sport has the factory extractor but it is enhanced and not the plain old mil-spec extractor. They may have changed them since i was in the military though.
Have you considered what you are going to run for back up sights? I have become very fond of my 45deg offsets, but I see now that they are making folding offsets. Also what sling are you using, since I went to the quick adjustable Magpul MS3 sling that converts from a 2 point to a one point and can be attached at 3 different places on my rifle that I am using it more and more. Just things to think about spending more money on.
I also am waiting for pics, I also want to see what groups that rifle will shoot.
What kind of ammo are you running and how does it perform? So many questions so few pictures....she will be a one of a kind when you are done. Keep us informed.

I do particularly enjoy the larue mounts on everything, the return to zero, quick detach options are really nice. I could definietly do without the grip, I find the stock grip fits my hand quite well itself.

I did use a red dot for a while but wanted something for longer range shooting, mostly at the range. The 1x just wasnt cutting it for me and the a cog is quite nice

The reason for the extractor kit is trying to resolve a problem I have with 556 FTE . 223 works without issue but 556 has FTE issues. Im sure the multiple mall ninja tacticool insults will help shake the casings loose though. Its much appreciated when I was simply trying to share my experience
It isn't a bad looking rifle and I am not going to flame you for anything. You used quality parts and made the rifle your own. Not uncommon. I am just surprised that the OR was chosen, based on the accessories.

As far as the extractor kit, like Oneyeopn, my bolt came from the factory with the o-ring and insert, so I wouldn't think the BCM kit would do anything for you there. If you are having extraction issues, was the .223 you were shooting steel cased and the 5.56 brass? If so, make sure you give the chamber a good scrubbing after using the steel cased ammo. The steel doesn't expand as well as the brass, and you will get residue in the chamber that will cause the brass cases to stick if not cleaned out.

Sounds good enough to me. Why have "Toys" if you can't play with them.

After looking at your first post I knew you have been spending time over at ARalmost.net. The way you posted and the information you posted were things that over there they find impressive but might have got you flamed for not starting with a Colt.

I honestly believe that you would have been better off starting with a lower cost rifle because of all the mods you have installed. It is your gun, I am sure that you will enjoy it because you built it. I understand that, I myself have built some seriously custom Mauser 98's and now a couple of MSR's. In fact one of my favorites was one that I built from all the parts that I bought and installed and after a while discovered that they didn't fit in with what I wanted out of the end product. I sold it to our preacher a month before the craziness hit. I probably could have quadrupled my money but like our preacher and he wanted it.

Just for your future knowledge this forum is a good place to be, I can't speak for everyone but I know for a fact that many of our members are here because they didn't care for the way the people are on the other main "tactical" forums. Just a year and a half ago if you posted on those forums that you bought a S&W M&P15 of any kind you couldn't finish your first post without being run out of the forum on a rail. I know I was one of them.

It is satisfying to sit back and see the reputation that the M&P15's have earned. I would like you to know that I for one am not impressed with the cost of your parts. I do like to know the parts and pieces someone has used in building their rifle. The satisfaction that they get from seeing what they could build can be very evident in their postings. You really haven't been flamed here, yes you have been teased but actually pretty mercifully compared to how your original post came across. After looking at your rifle, I would say "the force is with you" but now its time to put some bullets down range and practice your marksmanship skills.

Your rifle is new enough and having FTE issues with 5.56 ammo so very uncommon that I would think that warranty service would be expected. There are no outside physical dimension differences between 5.56 and .223. So having nothing but FTE's with 5.56 is really hard to understand. I am not trying to question your remarks but it does make me wonder what can really be wrong to cause you this issue. I load my ammo to 5.56 performance levels and have just never heard of this problem in any MSR of any brand.
So enjoy the forum, just remember we aren't the other guys

A nice setup I'm sure. Certainly wouldnt be unwelcome in my gun case. But... Seems kinda like buyin a ford focus then spending $100k giving it gold plated rims and platinum exaust. A whole lot a money for not a lot of function. If you had that much to spend why not go for some top end rare rifle and skip a do it yourself ar all together? If all that was aquired over time then kudos (minus buying an optic worth more than the rifle, wacko imo). Buying it all at once does make you kinda look like you just wanna brag to the guys on the firing line how much cooler your ar is than theirs. Extravegant waste of $. All just imo, as long as you enjoy shooting it and it doesnt become a dust collector then more power to ya.

Aside from not being able to fire the round it's designed for, that's a fantastic end product you have for yourself. But my eyes just about rolled out of my head at the claim that you posted that list with prices to help "those who might be new as well". Just what scenario were you expecting?

Hi, I am a new to AR's and want to know how to spend $4000+ on a gun. Looks like I came to the right place! I'm so glad that someone was so thoughtful to lay out exactly how to do it!

You "built" (and by built I mean replaced perfectly good parts on a complete rifle with more expensive ones) one heck of a rifle and now I know exactly what I have to spend to do it just like you!

Really?

That is a great looking rifle! However I have some bad news concerning your rifle. I don't think you are quite done spending money on it. Sorry, but I have a couple of questions for you concerning your rifle. First question- why do you have QD mount on your ACOG? I am going to go out on a limb and assume that you take it off and store it when you are not using it. Umm-if that is that case, well then here is the next question. How would you shoot it without that optic mounted since you have no BUIS? What if something happens out in the field to it and for some reason you still need to shoot- say in a SHTF scenario? You can't yell "timeout" while you go fix your gun. Just something to think about.

Since you seem to have the best on your rifle, and I have the same model as well, might I suggest the MI flip up HK style front sight? As for the rear sight, you absolutely need to pick up a Matech rear sight. You can send oneyeopn a PM for one of them. He sells them for around $80 to $100 each I think. Do not hold me to that number since you will have to ask him. All I know is they are nice.
My next question concerns the fact that I don't see a sling anywhere. Are you going to carry your rifle 24/7 with both hands? Sooner or later you are going to get tired so you will need a sling and the mounts. I would suggest picking up a Magpul sling from http://ottofirearms since they have the really good prices on Magpul accessories.

Now I figure that should push up your total another $200+ and I really am sorry to mention that to you. However it will be money well spent. Now here is the good news. You will now have a $5000 rifle instead of a $4800 rifle. I think that has a much better ring to it don't you? I want to add that I feel you should make this rifle a family heirloom. I know my 13 year son would be properly impressed if I told him that he was holding a $5000 rifle and that would make that rifle priceless! Sorry for the long post, I am just trying to help.

I think there would still have been a lot of "why?" questions, but it would have gone better (at least with me) with a little honesty. Something like "I've spent a lot of time and money putting together a pretty sweet rifle that I'm proud of and here it is: ..."

Sorry ohbejuan, seems some of our fellows ARe trying to play AR7+8.com, and turn your sincere enthusiasm into being sorry you posted. I'm sure you guys are feeling superior now, and it always reminds me of the farm, when one little pig got a bit tail, all the others would "chew" on him and chase him till he "porked out".This type of "thuggery" is really the antithesis of what the S&W forum is all about. The OP was excited about "fixin up" his new rifle, my AR is an 18" RRA predator with a 5 round magazine and an ACE Combat stock as its only change, and no I'm NOT going to post pictures, so no I'm not into loading a bunch of "junk" on my rifle, but if the OP wants to or you fellows want to whats the problem. I'm a poh boy from the South, being a gentleman was a big deal, didn't matter whether you had lots of change or a little change, and yes we all passed around the same cigarette, and all the men had a smoke on the front porch at church, between Sunday School and Worship. The S&W forum doesn't need this kind of PC nonsense or group think, save that "stuff" for your "communist parties"! billy magg

Just a thought. Some one might have had some old old old ammo not stored proper and just dumped it on the market trying to make a $$$.

When the "pony" first came out and the AK was around, you could fire one ammo in one but NOT the other with-out problems. I don't remember which was which. I just knew it was trouble if you did.

Sorry to see obejuan hit the dusty trail, but personally if I had $4500 to put into a rifle I would be building one from the ground up not just replacing parts. Just my .02

I dunno. I don't see the problem. I was on a poor college student budget when I bought/upgraded my OR. My running tally spreadsheet still has her at $2284.25 (of course that does include a 22lr and a 300BLK upper). I can only imagine what she would have in her if I had a salary.

As far as building from the ground up, I seriously considered it, but for quality parts, I went with S&W since it was slightly cheaper and included a warranty. I think having my rifle pre built and being able to slowly upgrade benefited me in the long run by allowing me to understand both how the rifle is put together and how all the mechanics work.

While I understand how some people took it, I don't think the OP meant to come off as "I'm better than you because I can spend this much money." I mean he did have pics of the finished rifle, it's not like he made up some crazy imaginary rifle just to pretend he was better than everyone else. I think everyone would do close to the same if they had the finances.

Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone in the thread, just a few people, but I thought this group was better than this. Leave the flaming of people new to the hobby and excited about it to those guys over at "those sites."

I wish I would have looked at this post before he took the pics down! I feel for him in the fact that there was a lot of bashing in the replies but thin skin gets you no where. I have a plain old sport and all I did was get a new stock because this whole "pinned" ordeal doesn't work for me. I use the iron sights on it and I shoot it. Do I need all the fancy stuff, no but do I want it sure! I go to the range every 3 months or so with a run of the mill M4/M16 (whatever the armory gives me) that uncle sam gave me and I shoot 40 out of 40 with iron sights on pop-up targets. I went to Iraq and Afghanistan and was lucky enough to get a red-dot and a sling and that was it. The guys with all the stuff you don't need we called gear-queers. Sad part is with all that stuff they still couldn't shoot. I love how people get AR's and make them "mil-spec" but yet never spent anytime in a uniform or if they did they never saw combat. What do they need a $5000 AR for? If you have the money then hell why not but don't act all billy bad-*** because someone else's AR doesn't have all the bells and whistles. This isn't being addressed to anyone here its just things I noticed while venturing on the forums.

j train- I was stating an observation on my part. I didn't think I was "bashing" him. Did it come off as that? It wasn't meant to. I will say this about his rifle. It was really decked out nice. I would be afraid to set it down somewhere for fear of it "walking" off. BTW-Thank You for your service!

I guess I should have said heckling instead of bashing. I use the term bashing very loosely on forums. I didn't get to read the original post so I don't really know how he came off with what he was trying to say. It's all fun and games really. You know they say if you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen!
