Default M&P 15 Trigger kits?

Has anyone actually changed out the stock trigger on the M&P 15 5.56?

I was thinking about changing to a smoother and adjustable trigger at some point in the future. Just wanted a rough idea of trigger kits available, not just any trigger set up (there are a ton of those on Google) but good ones that people have actually used and can recommend.

Thanks

The trigger that came in my M&P 15 is in my spare parts box. I have been running a trigger from Bill Springfield and couldn't be more pleased with it. And the price is right too.

I run the RRA 2-Stage Nation Match trigger in both my M&P 15T and my M&P 15-22.

Geissele Super Semi Automatic. One of the finest triggers you can put in a carbine AR in my opinion.

I got lucky with my M&P15T's stock trigger. The standard GI trigger in mine is smooth, exhibits no creep whatsoever, and the break is crisp and consistent. Pull weight is just over 6 lbs. Perfect IMO.

Although Bill Springfield has a lot of happy customers using his tuned FCG it's not an option I would personally recommend. In order to tune these parts material is removed from the engagement surface on both the hammer and sear. These parts have a hardened surface from the manufacturing process. Removing material will reduce the service life of these parts.

Additionally, although not a regular occurrence, some of Bill Springfield's tuned FCG's have reportedly malfunctioned resulting in a double fire (pull the trigger once, rifle fires two rounds). While I'm sure he'll cover the work and resolve such a failure should it occur this is one type of failure I want nothing to do with (modified FCG + select-fire operation may be perceived as intent at the time of malfunction if at a public range).

I have no personal experience with Bill Springfield's work. I have corresponded with him in the past. He was a pleasure to deal with. While waiting for my M&P15T to arrive at my local FFL I was considering placing an order for a Bill Springfield tuned FCG as I have never been that fond of the GI trigger characteristics. I'd read lots of positive feedback about his work. As stated, though, I had also read reports of these tuned parts going select-fire. I contacted one individual who reported having experienced this malfunction and his response was that his gunsmith suggested the aforementioned reason (material removed causing accelerated wear). This led to discussing the issue with a qualified AR armorer who suggested the same, that cutting through the material on the hardened engagement surfaces likely accelerated wear causing the malfunction. This is the reason I decided against ordering one of his trigger groups. As luck would have it my M&P15T turned out to have a fantastic trigger and so I decided against any kind of after-market trigger.

For those using a Bill Springfield trigger - I mean no offense by reporting this. If this tuned fire control group has been working well for you it's likely to continue doing so. I post it as results of my research when I became interested in Bill's work for my AR. I'm posting it simply because of the sticky nature of a F/A or select-fire type of malfunction - it's been known to attract unwanted attention for something unintended. Merely posting this as FYI.

I'm not a big fan of "tuning" by removal of material that can infringe hardening properties, cause a reduced service life, or anything compromising predictable and reliable capabilities.

For example, when I pull the trigger once on a semi-auto I expect the weapon to fire one round each and every time, and not one then every once and a while two with a single trigger pull. I also expect, and plan for, a long service life with my weapons, a dependable and predictable service life.

I do perfer a smooth two stage trigger. The M&P15OR I have has a single stage trigger. I don't exactly object to a single stage trigger, but everything else I have all have "creamy smooth" two stage triggers that are well suited to my style of use. I also don't object to the stock trigger pull weight (actual measured is 6.3 pounds) but its also that on my other weapons the weight is in the four to five pound range (actual measured) which I find more agreeable range for my own shooting style.

Also I have to consider the use of this weapon. Aside from a "pleasure shooting" weapon at times, it can also be placed into service as an engagement weapon in my law enforcement duties and the requirements for such include a two stage trigger. Considering that i'm able to use just about any weapon in such duties, as long as they meet requirements and guidelines, and that I get re-imbursed for my (duty) weapon purchases, most anyway, like this one as soon as I change the trigger out to a two stage trigger - although I originally got this with pleasure shooting in mind and had my colt version for duty use I find I like this one a little better and will outfit it in the future to replace the colt.

Foxtrot: Given your requirement for a 2-stage trigger in a duty gun and your described trigger preferences I think Dragon88's recommendation for the Geissele SSA (Super Semi Automatic) would be an ideal choice.

Enjoy. Only down side to this trigger is that I will never again be satisfied with something less.

Or, you could try a Geissele SD-C - by all accounts very similar to the SSA, but with a bit crisper break....

Smile improved m&p 15 trigger

my first m&p 15 was the sport the trigger was long ang gritty but was very accurate ,I purchased a m&p 15 moe a.k.a magpul furniture it has a pretty good trigger no long gritty creep but I replaced it with a geisselle 2 stage 3 1/2 lb first stage is around 2.3 second stage in which it fires is 1.3 lb there is no adjustment also the military uses them. any good trigger will improve your shooting.and most are great, timney,ar gold chip mccormick, jard,jp,jewell there is one that is the best its a matter of personal preferance I installed a geissele in my colt ar & my m&p15 I am happy with them there great

I use a Spikes Tactical Battle Trigger, Nickel-Boron, very smooth with not a lot of take up or overtravel.

I have used both the Geissele SSA-E and RRA NM 2-stage triggers. The SSA-E has a lighter 1st stage and a physically smaller trigger than the RRA NM, other than that (and the price) there is no difference in my experience (not opinion). Both are fine triggers and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Thanks for the replies folks. The post was almost a year and 10 months ago and between the time of the post and present i've gone with the Geissele SSA-E for all my personal AR platforms and also installed many of them since on the M&P 15 OR's duty platforms we have replaced our colts with here. For this platform, the Geissele is probably the best trigger i've ever used and i've used many over the years.

Just wanted to get an idea of what others were using with the M&P 15 at the time of the post.

Just another "updated" reply... agreeing with Deaj, above. I tried Bill Springfield twice. I do not wish to disparage anyone - I will only relate my experience. Both rifles were doubling. They would occasionally (not every time) fire 2 rounds instead of one. In all fairness I did not send them back to him to rework, which I'm sure he would have done. The problem was, I no longer trusted the rifles to work as they should, and as long as those trigger groups were installed, I was going to have that problem.

I put Geissele SSA-E triggers in 3 ARs and never looked back. Excellent trigger groups and now all 3 rifles feel the same, which is a very good thing. I heartily recommend the SSA-E triggers if you're looking for 2-stage trigger.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But I also was wanting to replace the stock trigger out of my Tactical. So, looking at the Geissele sight, there are a dozen or more options. How do y'all choose?? Will mainly be range shooting, mid range targets.
