Default M&P15 scope mounting

I have the M&P15 with the carry handle and dual aperture rear sight on the carry handle. Removing the carry handle shows the rail for mounting an optic; however the front sight is part of the gas block and it's a one-piece unit which would interfere with my scope using standard rings on the rail. I've seen rail mounts that go onto the carry handle supposedly allowing you to use either the scope or the iron sights; and other rails which has a 1" riser (essentially a rail on top of the stock rail to raise the scope). Which would be the best way to go? I finally got my scope in but mounting it directly to the rail after removing the carry handle puts the front sight smack in the middle of my scope's view. Thanks for any help! (I should've bought a flat-top optics ready model.)

If the scope is over 3 power, you won't see the front sight through the scope.

You can go with the 1 inch riser and mount it on the rail. Most risers are inexpensive and that is a quick solution. I would look through the photo section here and see how several people have set up their guns. I went with the riser option myself until Nikon came out with their Pseries mounts and I have replaced all of my risers with that mount. It is a much better design and eliminates a couple of mounting bolts/machine screws. There are other companies that make similar bases not just Nikon. If it were me, knowing what I know now, I would bypass the riser and go with the integral rings. You will have around $30 to $50 with the riser and ring combo. Nikon sells the P22 base for $49 and it has a really thick ring along with the correct height for your eyes. Burris also makes a set, Palmetto State Armory has some as well. You can check Otto Firearms LLC as well. I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your help! I just finished mounting my scope (Nikon P223 3-9x40) and sure enough, the front sight isn't visible despite it being dead center of the objective lens. You would think you'd see it but I'm glad it isn't... now I can go to the range next week on vacation and zero it in. Thanks again!
