Looking for recommendations on a decent scope for a Sport. Not looking to spend more than $200-250 including whatever it takes to mount it. Doesn't have to be tactical or SCOM approved. . Not planning any special ops anytime soon.

I always recommend Bushnell Scopes. They fit into my price range, have great optics and have always done well by me. I tend to favor the 6-24x50 but I shoot longer distances than quite a few and the barrel on my Sport has enabled me to shoot those distances accurately. I dont know what range you shoot at but the only things that I run 3-9x scopes on are my rimfires. Everything else gets a minimum of a 4-16x42. I have one rifle set up with an 8-32x42. My present Sport has a 4.5-20x50 Nitrex (made by Weaver) it was a gift and is a pretty amazing scope itself.

I like the Nikon P-223 3-9x40 BDC 600 reticle with the Nikon mounts. Great optics, warranty, and price.

I go with Grover on Bushnell's as long as you stay away from the Banner line. Where we disagree is I prefer a scope with less magnification. Their Trophy line includes an Illuminated 4A reticle in both a 1-4 and 1.5-6 that are made for AR's.

+1 for me as well.

As a fan of Primary Arms I have to throw this scope into the mix. GREAT value for the price.

I ahve a Bushnell banner 6-24 and LOVE it...... I also have a Cabela's 6-18 and its ok... But Nothing Like the Bushnell

I would appreciate it. I have had my order with SFWA for a week now and it is on backorder.

I have to agree with Grover. I like the long range high power scopes for a better/cleaner shot and the larger optic for better light gathering. Most of my shooting is longer ranges at dawn or around dusk for coyotes.

Does this rig clear the front sight?

It doesn't matter since it is a straight 3 power, the front sight will not show up. If your scope adjusts below 3 power then you will see the front sight.

My ACOG is 4x. You can see a ghost image of the A2 front sight post but its not bad.

Zip- The front post may be visible in your very nice Acog but in the P223 scope the front post is not visible. I checked all of my AR'S and the front sight was barely visible in the M223 point blank scope on 3 power. It was a ghost image as well. The front sight was not visible in any other scope regardless of scope location. Here are my pics. There are two S&Ws, 2 DPMS uppers on PSA lowers- these have the P223 3x scope and note the rings as well as scope location and 1 lone bushmaster with the M223 scope. The Foliage green Smith is a15 OR with a Nikon 3x9 P223. The OD smith is last years model Sport with a riser and low cost Tasco 3x9x50. I don't know what happened there but I hope you guys can understand my last post. I am still not good at posting pics yet.

Don I understood the post. My thing is where I go Prairie Dog hunting. The prairie dogs dont allow you to get very close and a 3-9 magnification really doesnt allow you to see a 2.5" x6" pdog over 100 yards. I have tried them and the reticle actually will completely obscure the target. I have found that optics limit the rifle more than the rifle limits your choice of optics. I had an 8-32x42 scope on my Sport when I had the original front sight still on it. The scope was up against the sight and you couldnt see the sight in the scope. I pulled the sight to enable me to get the proper eye relief.
A 3-9 power scope works if your target is larger but it will still limit what you can see with it. As I have said before I run 3-9's on my Rimfires. I also use the largest Objective lens that I can afford, it increases the light gathering ability of the scope. This is my opinion but you have to decide what distances and size of target or prey that you will be shooting at.

I wonder if that scope sits up higher due to the rings Don? The ACOG sIts pretty much right on the rail with the built in mount. I wonder if that's the reason?? Just curious. The ghost image is so faint it doesn't interfere.

Not being hung up on the "tactical" craze gives you a big
advantage when it comes to making a sensible choice in scoping a light carbine. Leupold is the brand to beat for a
scope for a hunting rifle. A VX-1 shotgun 1-4X with heavy
duplex or for a bit more money a VX-2 1-4X seems ideal for
a compact rifle.

I absolutely agree with you on your post! Please keep in mind that I am an ordinary guy that like to hunt as well. I am older so my eyes really like the stronger magnification as well as the larger lens. Most of these young guys haven't had to deal with this problem yet. I will admit the straight 3x is for carbine use, shooting at larger targets. When I am out in the woods hunting whether it is squirrel or deer, my scope is set to 6 power. I believe that you can see animals in the woods with your naked eye but should I need instant magnification, I find that 6 power is perfect for me. My primary squirrel gun is a 17 mach2 heavy barreled marlin with a bsa 6x24x42. Although I am no fan of bsa scopes, it gets the job done.

I find that the rings fit my eyes perfectly. The scope is the right height for me. The mounts are reversed on my two dpms rifles due to my son using the one. He like the scope closer because he is only 13 and still growing. I told him that one day he will have to remount that scope when he gets older. I checked all of my rifles in regards to the front post and the only one that I could see it in was 1x4 M223 scope. The front sight disappeared as I crossed the 3 power marking when I adjusted the scope. As for the ACOG, now that is the top of the crop as far as I am concerned in regards to AR scopes. Maybe one day I will own one but I doubt it. The scopes and guns that I have fit my needs perfectly. Thank you for the compliment about my collection. That is one thing about getting older that no one tells you. You get to accumulate a lot of stuff. I have spent my money on guns and tools. But not necessarily in that order- well maybe it was in that order! I want to leave something for my son and his future family so that is one reason why I have what I have. I asked my son the other day if he knew how much those were worth right now. He knew exactly the dollar figure. I asked him if maybe I should sell a couple for some cash and said "NO". I just laughed. They are an investment for me and him.

Well good taste is a relative thing. My RCO meets my needs perfectly. A varmint hunter at long distance?? Not so much!! It really all depends on what you want your rifle to DO. I don't varmint hunt. If I did I'd use my CZ with the big glass. I can shoot a squirrels eye out with that sucker! lol

I wanted my rifle for 2 purposes (above and beyond target shooting / general shooting enjoyment) 1) a short to medium range SD gun (up to 200 yards) if the wheels ever fall off the cart. 2) A firearm which could hunt medium to larger (deer) game in a pinch. Is it the best deer gun? Nope... But with the right ammunition and good shot placement will work just fine.

That being said it has limitations. Small game at very long distances and use for "dialing in" hand loads for ultimate accuracy to name a few.

But for my intent it's exactly what I wanted.

Why is anyone bringing up an ACOG? The poster said he didn't want to spend more than $250 so an ACOG isn't even in the realm of being feasible let alone helpful.

Maine- Zips remarks were directed towards me and not the OP. Specifically my comment about not seeing the front sight because the P223 scope is a 3 power scope and you couldn't see the site above 3 power. Zip has an ACOG that he can barely see the front sight and it is a 4 power. What I should have said was on the P223 scope the front sight would not be visible and left it at that. This brings me to a question for zip. This might sound stupid but can you put a magnifier on to use with that ACOG? I honestly don't know if you could or even if you wanted to but it was just a thought. In any event, its all good on my end in regards to this conversation. BTW- I almost bought an ACOG about 8 or 9 years ago. They were only $900 if I remember correctly. Don't spit your coffee out zip..

I am a distance shooter as well I have a nikon 4x24x50 and have just ordered a 45 degree offset BUIS setup for my sport and my 300. my 300 has a Barska 10x40x50 and my 15-22 has a NCstar 4x16x40 that I normally shoot at 100 yards with. The power scope depends on the distance you want to normally shoot at and the sport will shoot up to 500 yards accurately.

Maine- you are right. I think zip's comment was directed at the OP because they were talking about high dollar scopes. And if you are going to talk about expensive scopes then the ACOG has to be mentioned in my opinion for whatever that is worth. In any event, the Brown truck just dropped off my new Nikon scope from Cabelas. The only problem is that the rings are on backorder and won't be here for 3 more weeks! That is just wrong you know! Oh well, I can either wait or take the P rings off of one of my 1522's. Hmmm....

Vortex SPARC is another option, although for half the price, the TRS25 is a high-value option. Frankly, if someone isn't totally sure what they want, the TRS25 would be my go-to. Can't go wrong, it's a good value, and you can save up for the ideal....once you know what "ideal" is.

You guys are KILLING ME with these multiple rifles!! Very cool! Mine is lonely. Not to get too much off track again - and sorry I did in the first place - but I don't think you can magnify an ACOG. I was just wondering why a 4x set power scope would show the sight post ghost image and not another similarly powered scope????

X2 agree totally. However Grover, Zotzer, don5 and many others gave some great ideas. Really it boils down to what you want and what you can afford. Before I opted on the ACOG I was seriously considering the Nikon m223 and or the burris a332.

Here is the deal with owning many guns. Then you have to buy more ammo, scopes, accessories, storage devices- read safe or more than one safe, etc... not to mention upgrading your insurance policy. And the list goes on... In any event, Sorry to the OP for getting off topic.

They breed in the dead of night while you are asleep I found an 887 Nitro Mag in mine sitting next to my 870 Tac. None of the MSR would fess up Not sure about the ACOG and magnifing. I "thought" I saw a 5x flip on one some place but can't find it. I think almost anything is do-able.

I just bought the Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9x40 for my lever gun. The scope was on sale for $150 and the Weaver rings another $40. The nice thing about the Trophy series is that they will refund your money for up to a year after purchase if you decide you don't like the scope. Sold me

Looks like the bushnell scopes have the most recos for you. Sounds like the way to go in this price range. I trust their opinions too these guys know their stuff!
