Default M&P 15 Sport vs. Colt LE 6900

Surprised we haven't had a thread on this. I hadn't heard about this new offering from Colt until a few minutes ago. From what I have read, it does not have the forward assist or dust cover, and it offers a 1/8 twist, free float barrel. Seems though that the pedigree of this Colt offering is in question, and that it may not be a Colt at all, other than in name.

So, has anyone seen one? Looks like it was made to go head to head with the Sport. If you have seen one, post up some opinions. I am curious and may have to go find one myself.

I'll let you know in a couple months... My buddy just bought the 6900 and I just bought a Sport! You are correct though, it appears to be very comparable to the Sport as far as features go. I read a thread on another forum where Colt owners were disappointed that Colt was producing it, and felt it lessened the value of their rifles.

Yes, it appears that it is getting less love and respect than the Sport dod when it first came out! I think the Sport is the better buy on paper, interested in seeing some reports on the Colt.

I'm not sure that the 1:8 barrel on the Colt is any better than the 1:9 twist on the Sport. Both have traditional rifling, so I doubt there is a whole lot of difference. The Colt barrel is not lined, where the Sport is melonite treated, so for barrel quality, I would give the Sport the nod. I know that unlined barrels can be very accurate, but since Melonite is a metal treatment and not a coating, accuracy is not affected and the barrel is protected more against heat and corrosion.

The barrel on the Colt is free floated though. Colt is an optics ready model, where the Sport has sights that can be used right out of the box. Neither model has the forward assist or dust cover, and both have the integrated trigger guard.

I guess the real question is who makes the Colt, and are they going to stand behind the rifle? With the Smith, we know who makes it and we know that the internals are the same as their other models, and the MSRP for the Sport is less.

I bet either rifle would serve the needs of most shooters though. Keep us posted on how the two compare.

Good lord what has the world come to? A Colt with no forward assist, no dust cover, and a 1:8 twist rate barrel? The 15-Sport now comes with a 1:9 barrel? Have I stepped through the looking glass?

Maybe I should just give up on the AR15 platform and switch to a FN SCAR....

They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery there is. The Sport opened up a whole new market and with S&W changing things around and raising their prices I can see Colt trying to get a foothold in that market. We all know owning an MSR just leads to owning more so maybe they are hoping people will buy one then step up in their line.

You will be running around in snow shoes year round and have a dogsled team before I own or pour any of that Kool-aid.

I wont be buying any of that Kool-Aid myself...Oh I had a thought on the shortage of barrels, Thompson Center sells the 5R as its premium line and is having a hard time keeping up with its production, they are selling everything they can produce. S&W is also afraid to wake up some morning and find that they have a large inventory of stuff that is illegal. In the time since the school shooting their stock has dropped 30% in value because of anti-gun people selling it off. They are doing what they can to stay in business and put out good product. The whole political scene with the attacks on 2A would make a gun manufacturer very nervous about their very existence!!
Colt can imitate but will never duplicate this sweet little black jewel sitting next to me in a case. I feel fortunate to have bought into the Sport when mine was made. I think I would have really missed out on new friends, tons of knowledge and watching a 16" barrel dusting prairie dogs at over 250yards.

The Colt that really appeals is the LT6720R as it most closely resembles my M&P15-22s, but with dust cover and forward assist.

Nothing unusual about that one that I see. Uses the 1:7 twist, chrome lined barrel like all the other Colts. I'm sure it is a great rifle, but it isn't diverting from the Colt standard. The LE6900 is, especially with the barrel. They have basically dropped the TDP with the LE6900 to compete head to head with the Sport. That is what has my interest piqued. I didn't think I would see Colt try to compete in the market directly against the Sport.

Interesting. Coming from the country and being raised around animals. Wouldn't that "cross breading" make the new pony actually a Mule ?

I can't see why manufacturers can't have an entry level rifle.

Too many are hung up on the "fighting rifle" image and think that if it isn't exactly what Uncle Sam issues, it is junk.

I saw one last week. The box is marked Colt, as is the rifle. It does not have sights, dust cover or forward assist. The lower has a fixed trigger guard instead of the pivoting "Arctic trigger guard." The barrel is M4 profile, free floated with a round hand guard with one section of rail t the 12 o'clock position and holes for additional sections of rail at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. It comes with one Magpul 30 round mag.

GunBlast did a video review. It seemed to work great. According to the video, the gun is assembled in Kentucky. Anderson Arms is either making or assembling them. As to mil-spec or not, I cannot comment, but it seems like a good deal for the price. It seems to be Colt's answer to the S&W Sport and equivalent rifles.

A free floated barrel should be more accurate than the same barrel non-free floated. However, it will depend on your shooting if you gain anything from the free floated barrel. For example, if you are shooting milspec ammo, like xm193 and have a red dot sight that is a 3 MOA dot, shooting at 50 to 100 yards, you aren't going to notice the difference. If you are shooting match grade or handloads with a high power optic at 100 yards or more, you may notice increased accuracy with a free floated barrel.

As far as your mil spec receiver comment, do you mean mil spec dimensions? I think you would have to look pretty hard to find one that was not built to milspec dimensions anymore.

I've been wondering if and when Colt would come out with something like this to "help" their civilian sales. With all the "New and improved" out there and Military cut backs they had to do something besides just rely on the name. Esp. when you can buy just as good as,for less in many different "flavors" for civilian use and "most" everything meets Mil-Spec or better standards anyway. Not to mention build your own from the ground up and still keep your cost with-in reason.

To me. The basic M&P Sport is a great entry level rifle ready to shoot. Sounds like this new Colt might be one too.

The Free Float will do better in any rifle. You will see improvement in factory loads. But where it really pays off is shooting "dialed in" reloads you work up to match that weapon and what ever barrel twist it has and what bullet weight flies the best.

I'd venture to say "everything" AR wise IS Mil-Spec unless it's some off breed knock-off from Tim-buck-to. ALL new civilian AR parts are interchangeable form one to the other.

As for the getting back to "normal" and ammo. If you can find what you want at a fair price,I'd get it. When ammo catches up,those prices will drop as it starts to stay on the shelves longer. Another mad dash for MSR's might drive another price jump in them for awhile.

Not knowing the actual outcome of what's going to happen. I'd rather have an MSR in hand right now and no ammo before something slides under the table and says No More MSR's and granfather what we already have (for who knows how long). Ammo might be hard to find or it might be coming out our ears with out any new weapons being made. It's a tough call only you can make.

my stock sport is shooting one inch groups at 100 yards, right out on the box, with my el-cheapo 9 power scope and cheap ammo. she has the 5R barrel, 1:8 twist.

i actually purchased the sport tor 50 yard fun, iron sights shooting. BUT since she behaves so well at longer ranges, i may install a free float handguard. although i can't imagine how it will improve what my "mission" calls for.

i believe grover says that if i shoot long strings at 200+ yards, i will see improvement (with the free float) as she heats up.

right now, where i shoot is limited to 100 yards. that and I CAN'T FIND AMMO ANYWHERE. so i'm afraid to waste my ammo right now.

my sport is so sweet.

The Bushmaster Carbon 15 is not milspec because the rifle is made from carbon fiber, not aluminum. The dimensions of the receiver are the same as other AR-15s, as far as being able to take AR-15 aftermarket parts.

The Sport is also not milspec, due to the omission of the FA and dust cover, but the dimensions are "milspec". Milspec is also overused and misused by marketing folks.

All the dimensions are the same. I've traded parts back and forth with a couple friends with BM when they had some problems on the range and kept them running out of my range bag. No problems.

I still think that without the 5R rifling it is just another 16" carbine barrel. I do believe its the 5R that makes the difference. or the combination.

At $1100 for the Colt, it's barely an economical choice. Especially when compared to the Sport. I like the looks of the Colt. If you were to melonite the barrel and knock $300 or 400 off the price, the Colt would have my attention.

The Colt MSRP is $899, so $1100 is way out of line. I'm with you, wouldn't even look at it at that price.

Grover, do you not think that the free floating barrel and the trigger would outperform the 1:8 5R on the old Sport? I'm talking stock, straight out of the box. I know you can make the argument that you can always free float the barrel and improve the trigger on the S&W, but you aren't going to change the rifling on the Colt, but I just want to stick with stock comparisons now.

There still isn't a lot of info out there about this Colt.

Your right. I would like to hear more about this Colt. I do find it amusing that they went with an 8 twist, and free floated. Sounds like my sport in its 3rd month!!

No, not yet, sadly. I've had my Sport a month and a half and have only made it to the range once myself, and he couldnt make it. It's tough with three kids under three! He's got two himself, and works Saturdays.

When I do, I will post a range report.

Where do you see the MSRP? I can't find it on their website. I was going by budsgunshop price and a listing on GunsAmerica. Bother were just over $1100.

That is what was shown in this video. At the end of the vid, he shows some targets...not bad groups.

Let's not forget that the mighty COlt does not hold the contract for the next generation of military M4's. They are now a civilian market rifle maker.
I could not care less who actually makes the rifles for Colt. S&W most certainly has had much of their rifle making outsorced. Originally their M&P rifles were made for them, and stamped S&W. Now, they are making their own rifles top to bottom, but not really. There are subcontractors sending in parts from all over. The new Sport barrels are industry standard units, only they are meloniting them. They are certainly a mix of homebrewed and subcontracted barrels. Trigger groups, springs, BCG, all of it is Tinker-toy interchangeable, and no one is truly sure of its' origin unless their is a plant stamp mark, etc. on the parts.

I bet they will be really good rifles, and maybe they will push S&W and others to compete a little in price to keep interest in the rifles up. Nothing kills sales like a glut in the market- and Lord, is there a lot of rifles in boxes out there waiting to find a home......... for only $1450, or more..........!!!

I don't think the new Sport barrels are "industry standard units". For a chrome lined barrel, the bore is cut larger to accommodate the layer of chrome. If you take a barrel that was cut to be chrome lined and just melonite it, the bore will be too large and out of spec. Not saying that they aren't sourced from somewhere, but they still aren't the 1:9, M4 profile 4140 barrels that many use.

I guess if I was going to buy one, I do care if it is Colt made, because with an $899 MSRP, you are paying for the name to some extent. If this rifle is made by Anderson, and had the Anderson name on it, it would not sell for near as much, at least not pre-panic. The exact same rifle would have to sell for less than the Sport for me to even look at it, since I am not familiar with Anderson.

Does anybody know whether a dust cover can be added to either of these models? Neither one of them comes with a dust cover.

Being familiar with Colt AR's, I watched the video to give it a fair shake. I like the basic premise of the rifle. Having tried the Hogue Tubular non-ventilated handguard I know that they get hot. Yep it looks like every other MSR that doesnt have a FA or Dustcover. It shot well. I did miss the little things like the markings on the top rail for position but could get past that.
The one big thing I did notice, Colt changed their rollmark for this rifle. I hope they didnt go to this new rollmark on all their rifles. That prancing pony looks cheap, especially in its little box. Time will tell on this new pony, one thing I can say is its a pretty color!!
