It is basically the same as most of the rest of the S&W line, except it has a drop in quad rail and a Troy rear sight. Barrel, bolt, BCG, etc. is the same as the rest of the line and should provide you many years of use and reliability.
Most of the line-up are basically the same rifle with different features, such as sights, stocks, and handguards. The Sports, 15T, VTAC II, and MOE are really the only ones that have different barrels and lowers. Anything you read about the functionality of the OR, the 15, 15A, etc. will apply to the 15x.
Any particular questions you have?

The 15x is a "full featured" rifle with the forward assist, and dust cover. It also has the chrome lined barrel and a standard lower. It is closer to "mil-spec" than the Sport. I say closer, but only because of the features I listed.
The Sport line lacks the forward assist and dust cover. The barrel on the Sport is Melonite treated, vs. chrome lined. Also, the Sport barrel can be had in either a 1:8 twist, 5R or a 1:9 twist configuration. The 1:8 twist barrel has been discontinued, so you either get lucky or buy used to get it now. The lower on the Sport features an integrated trigger guard, vs. the pinned type guard on a standard lower.
The bolt, bolt carrier, and trigger group are the same.
So, yes, either way you can't go wrong. Just get the one with the features you like the best. Anything you read about the accuracy and functionality of the OR on here will apply to the 15x. They are the same rifle, just dressed up differently.

15X Owner
I have also noticed that the 15X is hardly ever talked about on this forum, it must just not be as popular or common? I have owned a 15X for about 8 months now and I love it. I have an EoTech 512 holographic sight and way too many attachments on it. If you have a chance to get one, I certainly wouldn't hesitate as long as it fits your needs. As said earlier, all of the non-sport S&W ARs are going to be very similar just different window dressings. All are fantastic guns, just pick the one that you like most!
If you have an specific questions you're more than welcome to send me a direct message and I'll try to answer it.

I recently (15 days ago) was able to pick up an m&p 15x used. had an upgraded magpul CTR stock, magpul MOE+ grip, rail ladder covers, a 4x32 red/green illuminated range finder scope and 4 mags. paid an incredible $950 for it in this current climate. was in great shape with a reported 800 rounds down the barrel, have put an additional 120 through it myself with no issues with gun or mags. it is fantastic! threw on a FAB defense T-pod grip/bi-pod I had laying around from a mini 14 I no longer own and loving it!

I really think the 15x is under rated. I have a Mossberg MVP with 24" bbl for tack driving precision and predator hunting. I wanted an AR-15 for a SHTF situation and determined a 16" bbl is the length I wanted. I knew I was going to want to attach an optic and a vfg, so a flat top and rails were going to be needed. had heard that the A2 front site is likely the most rugged and durable so that also steered me towards the X. really glad to have found one at a decent price.
after having spent time with it, I think I might prefer to have an angled fore grip and a red dot instead of the vfg and scope, though. live and learn I guess.

You did good Vinny, you got a great price on your rig. You can always customize from there.

I chose the 15X over the 15T mainly because of the A2 front sight. Love it.

I have one and love it. Added Daniel Defense extended rails and a SOPMOD stock. Shoots great, never any jams, FTF or any issues so far.

Thanks. I have the Aimpoint Pro and it is on the factory mount. The magnifier is an Aimpoint 3X on a LaRue LT755 mount.
