Since I must deal with the bullet button here in the great state of California (not), I am looking for some input at to the best "tool" to use in taking out the magazine. I did an on line search, and there are many options.

The CA Supreme Court has ruled that a bullet is a tool, one suitable for using to activate the bullet button. Just be certain not to have a bullet, or inert bullet attached to the weapon in any fashion (think, drilling a hole in a spent case, sizing and seating a bullet to make a dummy round, then tying to a lanyard...that would be bad). Just leave a loose round on the bench or in your pocket and you should be fine. Also, if at a range, do not leave the weapon laying on the bench without a mag in it. Always park it with an empty mag and transport with an empty 10 round mag locked in.

I have a 223 round keychain on a retractable lanyard that I clip to my top pocket that works well. I also have a magnetic button that works great, just don't get caught leaving it attached or stuck to the magazine I believe that is still a no no.

If you look at the FRS stock, you can supposedly do away with the bullet button all together.

Yup, no pistol grip, stock not adjustable, thinking you got it right.

Has anyone had any experience with the modified magazine with a small protrusion to push the button? You will need two magazines, not a issue for me.......

Thordsen Customs from the Bay Area (Ca) sell the Mags with the Button attached or you can buy the Buttons and do it yourself four buttons for $6.00. I have them on all steel, Alum, and Pmags, I also like the yellow flags that shows our Range Master the chamber is clear he likes them too, they can be used as a bullet button and to adjust most optics windage and elevation screws.

For Highpower matches I just use a 30-06 dummy round I made up with a FMJ, for fun at the range I have a bunch of magazines with the UBT, ultimate bullet button tool

It seems that 'bullet buttons' may soon be history. SB-47 prohibits so-called bullet buttons.

I must have been living under a rock. I have never heard of a "bullet button". I had to look it up.

That's so silly, I had to see it to believe it. The PRoC* never ceases to amaze me.

I watched the television interview where the California Attorney General said she would like to think that people do not manufacture products and that people do not purchase products (admittedly legal products) to get around "the intent of the law," which is to stop fast reloading (not to ban detachable magazines).

Well that is about like saying that she would like to think that a taxpayer would not take advantage of an admittedly legal deduction to get around the intent of tax laws, which are to raise money.

The attorney general said that the existence of "bullet buttons" is "scary." I would like to take this woman seriously, but that would be an insult to her intelligence.

A buddy of mine has a shooting glove with a protrusion on the middle finger that acts to release the magazine. Stupid **** they require, supposedly to make people more safe??? What a load.......

If you're looking to remove the bullet button itself and replacing it with another, you'll have to either use a bullet button wrench or saw off the bullet button assembly itself as they are using loc-tite.

Actually, pressing a soldering iron onto the stud in there for about 10 seconds will get it hot enough to soften the locktite.
So will turning the rifle on its' side and hitting it with a lighter for about 5-10 seconds.

I use the "Ultimate Bullet Button Tool".

I like it, it is handy...

Or you can use a simple magnet and place it on the button. Let it stick out enough so you can press it and also remove it if you are out at a public range. This is the most cost effective replacement idea for the button. But remember if you are caught with it, ahh, expect a ticket and fine. Or you can use a bullet to push the release button. Just saying.

I used to use a spent 22LR case as my bullet button "tool". Never had a problem finding an abundance of tools on the range floor.

I've since installed the above mentioned FRS-15 stock on my Sport and replaced the bullet button with a standard mag release. The bullet button removal took all of a minute using a pair of thin needle nose pliers. S&W didn't appear to have used any Loctite on mine.

The range officer at my club just smiles and shakes his head when he sees my non-scary featureless MSR.

Ha! You are not alone. I have no clue what that is. These "safety" devices are going to get somebody hurt.

I had never heard about a bullet button until today. I know you guys in California have some idiotic laws, but this is mind boggling. Do LEO's have the same restrictions??

A month ago I dropped off my form 4 at the local sheriffs office for a signature. He wasn't there, so I had to leave it. I got a call the next afternoon and the calling officer said it was ready, BUT, the sheriff wanted to talk to me before I picked it up. That didn't sound good. He was curious about the shop where I bought it and was interested in buying some NFA items from them. He didn't realize they had gotten a class 3 license. We then talked and had a really nice conversation about shooting. He then SUGGESTS that when I get it in a few months, I bring it by for him to see and maybe we could "shoot a few rounds together".

Free CLEO form 4 signature in 24 hours and the sheriff wants to play with your new toy. What a difference from California.

The bullet button is the primary reason why there are so many MSRs in CA. Prior to it the only MSRs sold had to have fixed (pinned or welded in) magazines, meaning that the rifle could only be loaded/cleared by opening it up.

The bullet button was an invention of necessity...and a not-so-subtle FU to the CA legislature, just like the FRS-15 stock.

I picked up my MP 15 today and much to my surprise the magazine and Kit I ordered two days ago from Thordsen Custom arrived also. Speaking of customer service! The Magazine was a California Compliant 10 round with the "tool" built in. The kit had 4 "tool kits" with excellent instructions and the factory magazine is now modified.

Going to test some loads with H4198 (only powder I have) tomorrow and if they cycle I will load up a 100 and let the fun begin.

I use the AR Tool Ring. Its a ring with the tool on it. I got it at calegelmags for like 7 bucks with free shipping that was hella cool..

It's pretty cool once you figure out what finger. I use it on my off shooting hand on the index finger. it's actually pretty bad ***....

I bought a powerful magnet that is in a gizmo that fits over the "button" and just push it when I change a mag. Then, I stick it on my stock or scope or something when I don't use it. I think I paid a buck for it at a LGS.

Stupid law. But if one is found without the bullet button is going to have some charges pending against them.

Careful. Running into the wrong LEO could lead to problems.

People have also questioned the legality of having a standard mag release stored in a grip for outside of Cali. That could also lead to possible trouble like your mag magnet.
