Default What model M&P 15 do I have?

Hello all, proud owner of a new M&P 15 here!
Just bought it today but I have no idea what variant it is...
On the rifle and box it just said M&P 15 on it, there were no letters next to it such as M&P 15T ect...

At first glance I thought it was the tactical because it had the rails, but it has the front sightg post also which the tactical does not. Also thought the X model, but the rear flip up sights are not troy brand...

Hope this isnt a dumb question.. Active duty Marine here and I have always wanted my own AR, just wanted to make sure I didnt get ripped off.

The pic is of the rifle, I of course added the EOtech

Don't feel bad Marine, I just got a M&P15 300 Whisper and have no idea what make one a particular type as opposed to another. Not my first AR15, I have a preban Bushmaster AR15A2, but this is my first M&P15.
Semper Fi.

Hey Jarhead on the 300 uppers they basically just make one....on the rifles it turns out to be a variable of just a few characteristics which define the different ones. The biggest variable is sights, barrel twist, F/A and dustcover, then you look at Handguards and gas blocks. That is how I tell them apart.

There should be a factory label on that box giving the SKU number, the serial number and the Model number.

The picture looks like the M&P15X, with the addition of an after-market optic.

Thanks for the kind words Oneye "Hey Jarhead", proud to be one! The real iissue for me is How do I tell one model AR15 from another. The information on the difference between models should be available somewhere, I just haven't found that place yet.

Great looking rifle there!

The best place to look at the different models is the S&W web site, believe it or not. You can see what comes on each model, you can even do a web comparison which shows your selected models side by side. Just stare at the pics and read the descriptions and you'll pick it up in no time. Lots of times the variations on each model are small, but there are visible.

Enjoy your research.
