Default Buying an M&P 15 Sport...

Hi! I read on here alot, but haven't posted much. I saw a Sport model online a little bit ago, and opted to jump on it. Seemed like a decent deal with shipping included and no credit card fees. Now I have to have my local FFL dealer do his thing, and then I'll just hurry up and wait. And find some ammo. I'm excited.

It should go well with the M&P 15-22 that I have.

Just because I like the look, I'll be putting a carry-handle rear sight on it. Is there any noteworthy difference between what is available?

I was thinking of something like this...

UTG Leapers Version 6 Match Grade Carry Handle Mnt 950 | eBay

I would not go with the UTG carry handle. If you intend to use the carry handle, purchase one that has been taken off of a Colt, BCM, S&W, etc. Stay with the American made ones. The UTG sights have a tendency to not be level, for the screws to strip, etc. If you watch the classified ads on this and other boards, you should be able to pick up a "mil-spec" one taken off of a new rifle for $50 to $75. Also be aware that the Bushmaster one does not have a standard height aperture, and will require a taller front sight post with the F marked FSB.

This is based on actual use of UTG sights on my .22lr AR.

yep, you will already be familiar with the controls, just some additional noise and kick to get used to :-). that and you can actually find ammo for it...

Love my sport! Accurate out of the box. Prices are dropping & you should be able to find a good deal.

The market got saturated with over-priced rifles....now comes the time where prices change....I am glad you all got your sports....I have run a couple of them pretty steady for a year and a half. Ended up trading one off for a Mini-14 SS and almost as much cash as I had in the rifle. The other one is my baby now. It will do almost anything you ask it to do. So far its only weakness has been shooting VLD (very long distance) but what do you expect out of a 16" barrel. Shoot em',. Take Care of em' and Enjoy a great rifle!!!

Cyphertxt nailed it...get a quality handle they are out there and not very expensive! your groups will thank you!! LOL

Thanks for the tips!

How would one know what is a 'good' used carry handle, or how to identify it?

Or, what is a good quality made-in-the-USA new handle?

I'm excited... I got a shipping tracking number today for the gun.

Allen,

Cyphertext gave you good advice. Stalk a Colt forum's classifieds. Used to be that they'd take off the carry handle to put on an aftermarket flip on sight, then sell their carry handle sight. That's how I got the one in my parts box.

I had a carry handle on my Sport. It was nice for a while. Then I noticed the added weight, and took it off. I still like the carry handle, so I'm keeping it for a different build. If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't have bought the carry handle sight.

If you want to skip over the $$$ I lost testing out rear sights, do yourself a favor.... buy a Troy folding rear battle sight. It costs a bit more, but it is well worth it. If I had just bought the Troy rear sight to begin with, I'd have more money in my pocket now.

Had my sport for a bit over a year. Like it just fine. Don't miss a dust shield or gas assist at all. Haven't needed either as far as i can tell. Bought it for around $700. Almost sold it 6 months ago during the AR scare when I saw I could get $14-1600 for it but I chickened out. Just put a new Sightmark red dot on and took the Nikon Prostaff scope off. Cabalas had their $135 red dot on sale for $75 so I bought two, one for the sport, one for my 15-22. Hope to go sight them in after Fathers Day. Both the red dot and the scope have the quick release feature so after I get the red dot sighted in I'll swap back and forth between the scope and red dot to see if they hold zero when swapping out.

Per Fedex tracking, it's supposed to be delivered today. Whoo hoo!

For those that were curious, it was $650 delivered. Then I'll have the FFL fees when I pick it up.

If you are buying a new carry handle, it won't run $40 or less for a good one. They will be in the $100+ range. Spikes, RRA, and Bravo Company sell them. Midway USA and Brownells should also carry them.

Used ones, you are looking for one that came off a Colt. Unfortunately, there is no real way to tell, other that trust the seller. If the seller states that it came off of a Bushmaster, you probably should avoid it as well, since it is not the same height as the mil-spec ones. It will work, you will just have to get a different sight pin for your front sight.

Great price Allen, my Sport with tax cost nearly $650 two years ago. Aim Surplus has the Spikes carry handle for $70, haven't seen one in person but Spikes equipment seems to be well liked.

It arrived today! Wow, that was a really quick turnaround. Bought Tuesday night, had FFL dealer send info Wednesday morning, it shipped that afternoon, and arrived today.

I am burning up a vacation day tomorrow from work, and going to through a little bit o' lead down the range tomorrow.

I'll check out the Spikes handle. Thanks for the suggestion.

They are forged. I'm not sure where that casting rumor came from.

You will absolutely adore your Sport. Got mine to introduce myself to the AR platform as I wanted to start out on-the-cheap. Thought later I would invest in a more expensive AR.

BUT, turns out the Sport does everything that I ask. It's a keeper for sure.

Which barrel does your example have?

I've pass an order for a M&P15 Sport about 2 month ago.
I live in France.
We are waiting for their arrival in France in the beginning of July.
It's the first time we can buy S&W AR15 in France.
But someone said to me that the Sport model has a casting lower and upper and not forged, so I'm a little "affraid" of that, I want forged one.

That someone is wrong. Both the uppers and lowers are forged on all of the S&W line. You have to look real hard to find a cast upper or lower here in the states. Go with the major brands and it just isn't an issue.

I had read that the lowers are 7075 T6 which would make them machined out of a block of aluminum and hard coat anodized. Aluminum is cast into blocks, then machined.
From the S&W product page:
Product: Model M&P15 Sport?

Almost all lowers are made like this with the exception of the new polymer types now appearing on the market. Forging, I believe, involves a hammering process of some sort.

My S&W has the Anchor Harvey Forge mark right on the receiver. Others are forged in house by S&W. They are not machined out of a block of aluminum. They are forged and then S&W would do the final machining.

Anchor Harvey - The Forging Process

Olympic Arms used cast receivers many years ago, but they don't even use them anymore.

Mine is a 1/9 too. Looking through the product line on S&W site seems most are. I live in Jersey and because of restrictions in this fine "all guns should be banned state" I was forced to get the only model legal here, ORC. Isn't 1/7 supposed to be a more accurate twist? Is 1/9 that much more cheaper to make or is there another reason most if not all M&P's are 1/9?
