Default Most disappointing add-on part for your M&P15

what is the most disappointing part/accessory/addition that has been added to your M&P15?

for me it was a FAB defense (Mako group) t-pod G2. I had the grip/ bi-pod on a mini-14 that was somewhat tactical. sold the mini when prices sky rocketed and got an M&P15x for a few hundred less a couple weeks later. went to add the t-pod that I'd kept but just wasn't happy with it on the 15x, added to much weight and bulk (I know it's odd that that didn't bother me on the mini). I really liked the T-pod but it was just blah for me when moved to the carbine length AR-15 platform.

Same here....lol....just sent mine back too. Got the VFG and that works MUCH better for me.

Another one that was disappointing was the grip/bipod. Not strong enough, not adjustable and too heavy. I find it much better to keep the Magpul VFG on there permanently and put on a UTG bipod (surprisingly great quality) only when needed.

same here on the AFG - although mine's on my 15-22 - my 15 has a Troy VFG. The Magpul AFG just doesn't do anything for me.

Wow, I was thinking of the AFG, might skip it now. I get a VFG with my KAC quad rail, guess I'll just put that on instead.

You guys with the VFG. Are u using the long or shorter one. I was thinking of getting a shorter one, but didnt know how easily it could be gripped.

As for the AFG, thats probably the most useless thing magpul has ever made.

Magpul BAD lever. My bolt won't stay back after the mag is empty. Annoying as hell.

The magpul AFG is actually what I tried next to replace the t-pod grip/bi-pod combo. I've only had it out shooting once, but I like it.

When I first put it on my rifle, I didn't like it so much. Felt awkward in my hand, I felt silly for buying it and wanted it off my rifle ASAP. But after holding it for about 5 minutes I started to adjust and understand what it's about and what it's doing for me. It's different than any VFG, different ergonomics and it didn't make sense at first grasp. But after spending just a little time with it I found I really like it. Swapping in the smooth piece instead of the finger groove only made it better for me. Now when I grab my rifle with the AFG it feels very natural. I even like how it streamlines the front end of my rifle compared to a VFG.

I had planned to order a magpul RVG for a shorter, lighter VFG as a possible option, but haven't felt the need to even try it after acclimating to the AFG.

I'm not saying everyone will or should have the same experience as me with the AFG, or imply that those who didn't like it didn't give it enough time, only that it's definitely worth giving it a shot. If it does work for you, it's awesome.

Edit: I have the AFG2, to be specific.

My Troy VFG is threaded to change the size from short to long. On paper and looks'wise - I like it shorter - but in reality I always end up putting the section that can be removed back on.

I really like my afg....I add a bipod when I need one...quick and easy....The Most disappointing addition....wow thats tough for me I have a couple...One would be the grip pod, although I still have my USMC one. The other was an AR-15 upper with dust cover and F/A....

The AFG vs VFG debate would, in all likelihood be dependant on how you hold the rifle. Classic style may not need a grip. The downside of a VFG is that it doesn't address muzzle rise. IMHO, the AFG helps if you are using a C-grip with your thumb completely over the top rail (and you have a large hand).

Having learned the classic rifle support using off-hand method, both take some getting used to. If you are using that method, the AFG certainly seems odd.

Regardless, there are plenty of people that will purchase a slightly used AFG. I bought one for my 15-22, and when I got my M&P15 VTAC, another AFG and spare mags were purchased at the same time.

To each their own.

My complaint isn't as much with AFG product as it is for the fact that it will not work right with my current rifle. I have the Troy VTAC rail and you add on the smaller rail sections to where you want to add something to the rail. Because of this there is about a 1/2"+ gap between where the AFG mounts and where the rail is and it just felt very awkward. The AFG sticks way out from the rail.

I have both of the Tapco Intrafuse Verticle Grips and really like them both. I tend to keep the stubby one on more than the larger one though. I like the extra storage in the larger one though a lot. I bought the AFG because I liked the way it felt on another rifle but it just won't work with my rail.

This is my first AFG2...I bought it for a Hi Point 45 Carbine....when I traded it for a 1911 pistol....I got the AFG2 back he prefers Vertical Grips...I just got the Hi Point back in another trade which means I actually got the 1911 for 200 rounds of ammo...LOL....I will be putting the AFG2 back on the Hi Point. I havent tried the bigger AFG's.

As far as the dustcover and F/A upper receiver...It was engraved with the Marine Corps emblem and said "the few, the proud, Marines" I received it in a package deal and really inexpensively. All parts from Brownells... I never thought about them...This Sport will stay the way it was designed as far as the receiver, barrel, BCG combination. but the debate can go on forever....it is just a matter of personal choice....I carried a 60 in the corps, we didnt have vertical grips of any kind back then....

I have a M&P15 VTAC as well. I put both short rails on the bottom, attached the AFG to the "rear-ward" one. The front rail just has the front lip of the AFG, effectively holding it in place AND not leaving a gap. The rest of the 2" front short rail I use for the bipod. There is just enough room for it.

No, it's not ideal, but your other option would be to get a longer bottom rail.

Still, love the VTAC...

I think the afg2 is much better. Leaves room on the bottom rail for other add ons (bipod, light etc)

Picture of it on my LR 308

The OP asked "what is the most disappointing part/accessory/addition that has been added to your M&P15?"

I wasn't comparing anything. I made a simple statement. I bought one item. It was junk. I replaced it. I didn't comment on the ACOG.

Edit: The only reason I didn't mention the Magpul M.O.E. handguard as being very disappointing was because I wasted more money on the DMS-1.

Mine would be my Blackhawk quad rail. I really liked the looks but I had to enlarge 2 screw holes because they wouldn't line up after installed. Also, after a few months I realized the whole thing is slightly off center so the top rail doesn't line up with my rail on my upper. Not really that big of a deal but I expected more out of a piece that price. The final gripe is their customer service sucks. I called 2 times and got no answer and no reply to an email I sent.

Anything with the word "tactical" in its description. From what I have read on the internet, I should have become a "genuwyne" operator and be able to hit targets out to 1000 yards! Didn't work!

Sad but true. Anything with "tactical" in the description almost certainly isn't legitimate. It's almost a dirty word when talking about AR15ish stuff. Maybe because it's redundant?

I picked up a UTG Pro hand guard - it was $70. Fit perfectly on my AR, didn't rattle or loosen up, but it was heavy compared to others. Hence the $70 price tag.

Pulled it back off and reinstalled the original M4 style hand guard.

They are rather large. A good friend loaned me one for a test drive on my shotgun. Even on that it was rather big. The XPS-2 series is much better with the CR-123 battery mounted crossways. I opted for that and have been very satisfied with it.

I'll tell you what, the most non-disappointing add on is the BCM Mod 4 charging handle. I put that on tonight and holy cow, night and day to the stock handle.

I only bought one item I regretted, a QD cheap bi-pod mount.

Sent it back thru Amazon and am getting a Larue "Tactical" (Uh-oh) QD mount for my Harris.

"Buy cheap, buy twice"

BTW, that particular 'Tactical' company has a combo deal on the top drawer Harris bi-pod (9"-13") with their QD lever mount included for a pretty fair deal.

What about Wilson combat tactical trigger unit 3G single stage trigger...does that fall into the category or junk because it has the word tactical in it?

Anything with the words 'tactical', 'survival' or 'zombie' in it will sell and I am just as guilty as anyone else. My biggest disappoint was a UTG/Leapers 4x 'Tactical' scope and QD mount. It was soon replaced with a Burris AR 332 w/ a Burris QD mount and I have never looked back.

I dont know where you are getting your information from but Millett is now owned by Bushnell and made here in the US. I have one of these scopes on my AR Rifle and I am very happy with it. I also work in the firearms department with AAFES and we sell these items quite often to go with AR Rifles.

Liebmeister - welcome aboard. You resurrected a thread from three years ago.

I do question your contention that Millett scopes are made in the US.

Well the 3 cheap knockoff carry handle sights. So far all of the Magpul furniture, I found that I like the Tapco shorty VG is the right size. Went with a M4 style quad rail by UTG Pro series, removed the BAD lever also cause my bolt wouldn't lock after last round would do it with every mag I had until I removed it.

My most disappointing add-on was the Magpul SL handguard. And I love that thing.

Yep, Millett may be an American company, but the box I have says "Made in China". Mine is a red dot though...

I believe that the Millet pictured is a variable magnified and illuminated etched reticle scope typically selling for $200 or less. As a practical matter for mounting on an AR, a cheap dime store optic is a cheap dime store optic regardless where it's made, right? The only useful question is does it fit the intended application. Range toy worthy or hog hunting? yes. Battle worthy optic? no.

PS I also like doing business with the Magpul for telling Colorado to "stick it" with their abusive new gun laws that costs two legislators their seats...out with the Commies, in with the new. They moved to Wyoming.

The AFG, actually the AFG-2 on mine, is excellent. I first tried one on a friend's AR and it instantly felt like the most natural way ever to grip a carbine. Wouldn't give it up.

Most disappointing was a Weaver 1-5x Tactical scope. The FFP design may have a place but on this one in daylight even at full brightness the reticle is pretty much invisible. Returned it to Midway without firing a round with it.

I put a UTG Pro MTU001S rail on my M&P15 Sport. It's not noticeably heavier than the M4 plastic. It's the 'slim' version of their regular quad rail. The side rails are also removable which helps keep it light. I think I paid about $60 for mine and I love it.
