Took dad to the range today...
...and he outshot me!
I was shooting my M&P 15 TS with Aimpoint Pro in a Larue QD mount and he was shooting his Sig/Sauer M400 with an Eotech EXPS2.
Both guns out of a Caldwell Lead Sled using PMC Bronze .223 55gr. No matter what - his gun outshot my M&P at both 50 & 25 yards (we didn't shoot at 100 or 200 since both of our eyes don't work as well as they used to). We both shot each others guns as well and that darn Sig outdid my beloved M&P every time. While I love my Aimpoint - I'm really jonesing for an Eotech now. Love that optic.
Any way it was a great pre-fathers day outing. Beautiful, light breeze, barely a cloud in the sky, about 80 degrees and not another person at our range the whole day. Totally peaceful except for our shooting. Other than being outshot by my dad it was a perfect day.
By the way...my dad is 81 years young.

Not to take away from your dad's shooting, but please define how he out shot you? I mean, you are using a tactical rifle with a 14" barrel and a 2 MOA optic. Not a bullseye competition rifle by any means.
Did you score center of mass hits consistently? If so, it was a tie!

Sounds like it was still a good time! I wish I could take my dad to the range, but I've got no ammo lol.

Sig versus M&P. They just arent on the same playing field. His Sig likely has a 1/7 twist barrel where as ur M&p is still using the old 1/9 or 1/8.
A relatively good shooter will shoot better with the 1/7 no matter what GR ammo is involved. This would explain why u and him both shoot his rifle so well.

Smitty, I am going to have to disagree with you on this. A 1/7 twist will stabilize a longer projectile than a 1/9 twist, and it may be more accurate with a given load, but that does not make a 1/7 twist more accurate than a 1/9 twist with all loads.
The 1/9 twist is better suited for the 55 gr load they were using, but each barrel is different. Perhaps his barrel would do better with a different projectile of the same weight...

The OP gave a keyword called "light breeze".
In this case the 1/7 will work better even with a 55GR bullet. Less wind resistance when u have a bullet traveling with more RPM.
Take the wind away, its a fairly even game. Step the bullet up to around 62GR or bigger and of course the 1/7 wins easily.
I'm just saying the wind is affecting the bullet more from the slower barrel twist.

The M&P 15 TS is a 1:7 twist barrel. http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...layErrorView_Y
My guess is my 14.5" barrel vs his 16" made some of the difference - and he was just a better shooter.
Regardless all our groups were in the 1.5" range so I'm happy. For now...
It was a great day nonetheless.

This was going to be my next guess.
Also in terms of lower receivers. It makes u wonder if the M&P is a little bit more flex after the round goes off. If this is the case, the follow ups would be a little more off. I mostly have experience this with the AK varients, so i've never looked into it closely enough in the AR platform. But we all know that different companies make different products, some being a more solid product. It would make sense, atleast IMO.

I agree - once I get my Larue there won't be any more outshooting me though!
