Default Questions about my "new" M&P 15

I traded for a M&P 15 rifle a couple weeks ago. How can I tell what year it was made? Serial number is 0294*. I would assume that means that this gun was one of the first 3K produced, and an early gun? Also would the bore and chamber be chrome lined or nitride finished? Gun is in very good condition and didnt appear to have been fired very much at all. So far Ive put 300 accurate reliable rounds through it. It had all factory furniture on it when I got it, but Ive put magpul FDE furniture and a Midwest 10" free float rail on it. Ive got an EOtech in layaway to go on it in a couple of weeks.

Well, it's carbine length, which cuts out any of the 20" models and the barrel has the cut outs for attaching grenade launcher/underbarrel shotgun, so it's most likely an M&P 15, M&P 15X, or M&P OR (and probably the OR since you didn't mention removing the A2 front sight) all of which have a chrome lined barrel - your's is probably chrome lined.

contacting smith and wesson directly or searching around a little should help you with the age of your gun.

I was recently talking with an AR armorer who said the "date stamp" on the M&P 15s is derived from the two letters which prefix the serial number.
