Default changing a 22 to a 223

If I have an ar-15 that is a 22, can I turn it into a 223 with just a new upper reciever?

Welcome! I believe that unless a .22 LR AR-15 was engineered originally to be a 5.56/.223 (meaning a full-size receiver, etc., intended for a centerfire rifle) that the swap will not work.

We need more information, mainly make and model of your AR15 .22LR.
If it is a S&W M&P15-22, the answer is no.

That is what I thought. But I wanted to make sure. A friend is buying a S&W and wanted to see if he could also make it a 223 with a reciever change.

A friend is buying a S&W 22. Not sure which model. Just doing a little research for him before he purchases it.

Go to the S&W 15-22 forum, specifically targeted for that rifle. Which is awesome! Got mine in Feb and already run over 6k rounds through it. Drove me to pick up a S&W -15 a few months ago. Love both rifles.

The 15-22 looks like an AR, but the specs are different (IIRC, the lower receiver is a tad wider). Some after market add ons, like a B.A.D lever for an AR don't fit 100% on the 15-22, but there is a secondary market for 15-22 specific items. Others, like triggers or grips, or anything that attaches to rails will work fine.

The 15-22 is definitely a gateway drug to other ARs...... Have fun with it!

Bought a 15-22 in March. Absolutely love it. So needless to say we are on the m&p 15 forum. So yep the 15-22 got me hooked and the m&p 15 was bought in June. Could not be happier with my Smith and Wessons.

Heck didn't even have to bug the wife too much. She told me just go get the new m&p. but I bought her a new ipad to kinda soften her up first.

If your friend is buying a 15-22, a .223 upper will not fit on it. The good news is he can always buy a .223 so it doesn't get lonely in the gun rack .
