I wish, but CA doesn't trust its citizens to have more than 10 round magazines. Don't worry, I don't trust them either.

I turn the 18rd Pmag extensions on my Gen2 30rd mags. So in the end I have 48rds total in the mag. The extension has never let me down and i've put many .223 and .300 AAC rounds through it. So i see no need for a 40rd mag when we can already have 48rds with a small extension.

They seem to be on back order everywhere. I did read a review and the results were good.

Midway has a few in stock as of now - they are allowing one per customer at $18.95 plus a $3 "special handling fee" plus $5 postage totaling $27. I got one just for the fun of it. The best place to get them is Botactical.

You can back order as many as you want through Cabelas. It's a shame to support Midway who's clearly limiting people to one so they can milk the shipping and "special" handling fee.

If u already have several 30rd Pmags. The extra 10rds plus the extra $27 just isntnt worth the upgrade.

Now if u had a few 30rd mags and u could order as many 40rd mags as u wanted. Then "maybe" it would be worth the upgrade. ut until we see them get down to the $13-$15 range (shipped). Then i highly doubt u will see a huge demand for them.

Yes I would agree with you. I have 4 30 rounders, 1 20 round and 1 40 rounds. I am planning on getting to 4 of each including the 10 rounders.

That gives me capacity of 400 rounds fully loaded.

I walked passed the mag isle this morning at the local Bass Pro. They had a few of these sitting on the shelf. I figured for $13, I may as well try it out. I'll just give it to my ole lady if i dont like anyways.

Nice! I was in my local one today and all they had were 20 and 30 rounders. I picked up a 20 rounder since I already have 10 of the 30's.

I just don't see the niche these are supposed to fit in. I mean, to me they look long and cumbersome. The 30rd are long enough and if you really just gotta have capacity there are the 60rd & 100rd quad-stack mags.

I'd pass on these and buy the 20s & 30s all day every day. Jmho.

Exactly how i see it. We have 30's and we already have the ability to extend the 30's into 48's. So why do we need a 40? Its good that Magpul hs come up with something new. But i just dont think it was the "new" that the market needed. They will sell without doubt, but they will sell because of the name. They wont be selling (so to speak) as the need of the market. I like to compare them to new iPhones every year, lol. They sell because of the name, not because they are needed. We already have products that fit the criteria.

With that being said. I tested my 40rd out over the weekend. It works flawless as with any other Pmag. But unfortunately, its long and i already have "long" Pmags with 48rds. So this one didnt fit my needs. I gave it to a new guy at the range who has just gotten into the AR15. He was very happy to have a reliable mag. And I was happy to know that i could help out a future shooter of our beloved sport.

30 rd pmag is $15, 18 round extension is another $30 for a total of $45. You have to be careful of tightening the screws on the extender, there are many reports of it cracking (it's not as durable as an all magpul Pmag), and it extends out several inches the length of the mag.

I'll take the 40 round pmag over that anyday, and can have 2 of them for that price.

That's the niche it fills.

Wow the price on those extensions have sure gone up over time. I paid around $12 for mine locally back when they came out and i've found a few for under $20 since then. And honestly, ive never had a problem with them after all the excessive use i have given them. I'm sure as with many other products, they do have problems that occur with some user or with specific batches. After all, we live in a world where nothing is perfect.

To each his own, but there are others that believe the same thing. Magpul didnt bring much, they just upgraded the old. Kind of like the iPhone from last year compared to this year, lol.

All in all they Pmags are great products, no doubt about that. So my question.......Why did they stop at 40rds. Why not just make a 100rd Pmag and be done with it. I believe the answer is 50rd will be an upgrade from 40rd (and people will buy it, because its Magpul). 60rd will be an upgrade from 50rd and so on (and people will buy it because its Magpul). Why sell a huge high capacity mag. When u could sell a bunch of upgraded mags over time? Very good business startegy. Just look at Apple for example.

Uggg. I hate Apple.

more rounds isn't necessarily an upgrade. But, why stop at 30? You yourself have mags that hold more. Magpul is just competing in that over 30 round capacity market. Not that there weren't options there before, but just because options exist doesn't mean another company shouldn't try to compete for that business. Especially when the company in question arguably makes the best. Again, something already exists that is working - but! that shouldn't/doesn't mean somebody else can't compete there.

Should American's have stopped with Ford? I mean why would Chevrolet or Dodge make automobiles when there isn't a market need for it, somebody's already done it.

Competition is a good thing.

Competition doesnt exist for Magpul IMO. They are the best ever made and I wouldnt argue that.

I just like how the market went crazy for 30rd mags. Then when the 30rd market died, they went to 40rd mags. What next, when the 40rd market dies, they give us 50rd mags.

My point is, why dont they step the game up and give us 75rds mags. See how that works out, then step the game up and give us 100rd mags. This extra 10rd (40rd) mag IMO isnt stepping the game up. Its simply updating the old 30rd mag to a 40rd mag. Nothing was given except and extra 10rds. There is no WOW factor in that scenario. Nothing worth saying WOW, lets go out and buy some of these. Once again, my opinion. But i believe the longer they mag the mag design, the less useful it is to the user.

I believe that, more than anything, they are meant to be a thumb in the eye of Colorado and a number of other politicians.

I'd like to see magpul offer their version of a quad-stack 60 & 100rd. THAT would be upping the game a notch, dominating the competition, and sticking it to the politicians.

One of the reasons that magpul products work so well is the amount of research, development, and testing they go through. I'm sure 50 round and up are in the works and will be released when they can be as rock solid dependable as the predecessors. You know, they need to make sure the curvature of the mag is optimal and the spring and follower will feed 100% of the time and all that.

But I totally get it that 10 extra rounds just doesn't do it for some people.

For those of you that have purchased the new 40 round magazine.......what are your thoughts. I took the one I have to the range today finally and I had a couple of minor issues. The mag would not lock into the mag well unless the bolt carrier was locked back. You could see that is was pushing the mag release back just a bit when you inserted it but not enough to catch it and lock it into the mag well. I also noticed that with the mag inserted that it was a bit loose and you could wiggle it around a bit in the mag well. I have some other new M3 30-round PMAGs that I haven't used yet and will see if they do the same thing. Other than these couple of minor quirks it seemed fine. I only had time to run 40 rounds through it

I have 2 PMAG 40s. They work. They are long. I would use them in a 3-gun or carbine match if they are allowed. I also have a few 10s, 20s, and 30s, Gen 2 and Gen M3. I like them all. I use PMAGS exclusively.

Looks like I have issues with all of the Gen 3 PMAGS. I have to smash them into the mag well in order to get them to lock in. The Gen 2 I can just insert firmly but the M3's I have to smash them in hard or they don't lock in. Kind of annoying but I guess I can get used to it.

The forty round magazine is intended I suppose to both to after the extension market and also to catch up with great weapons like the HK G33 that has had a forty round magazine for a while now. I would also like to see a reasonably priced answer to the quad stack magazines that could drop free and not explode.

I personally think they should focus on the .308 market a little more. Give those 20rd mags a much needed 30rd upgrade.

Im personally waiting on the AK Pmags to be released. One heck of an upgrade that is long past due.

I like the idea of 40 round mags, simply because the rounds come 20 to a box. Two boxes will fill one mag, vs 1 1/2 boxes for a 30 round mag, or two and a partial for 48 rounds. Just keeps it simple.

Simple comes at a cost, and that cost is versatility.

Why not buy 3 boxes and fill 2 of the 30rd mags?

Or buy 1 box and fill 2 10rd mags?

You must be confused if you think that I only have one or two of any mags! Nor did I say that you should only purchase 40 round mags, so you are not loosing any "versatilty". Buy the size that fits your intended purpose.

I just like the idea of not having rounds left over to make a partial box, so I like the idea of simplifying:

1 box = 1 20 round magazine
2 boxes = 1 40 round magazine

However, if you have enough magazines on hand, you could buy a 500 round case and you can fill 12, 40 round magazines, or 16, 30 round magazines, and have one 20 round box left over... so, for every 480 rounds do you want to change magazines 12 times or 16 times?
